Grimsby VIA Station is a VIA Rail train station located in Grimsby, Ontario, Canada. The station stop is located just west of the double-track crossing with Ontario Street, and is situated at Mile 27.4 along Canadian National Railway's Grimsby Subdivision.[1]

History

The first train station in Grimsby was built by the Grand Western Railway (GWR) when its mainline track running through the town was opened in 1853. On GWR's new mainline, Grimsby was located halfway between Hamilton and St. Catharines, and Toronto and Buffalo which made it a key stop along major transportation routes between the eastern seaboard and the west. The station highlighted the business importance of the town of Grimsby. Freight trains carrying perishable fruits were able to be transported further and faster. In addition, in conjuction with other interurban radial railways, the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR) helped expand the tourism industry in the area.

In 1900, the original Grand Western Railway station building was moved back from the tracks and converted into a freight terminal. In its spot, a second new station building was built by the Grand Trunk Railway. However, when the new building was burned to the ground in 1902, the original station building was temporarily brought back into service until a new third station building was constructed that same year. Throughout the 20th century, the original GWR station continued to be used as a freight terminal and fruit warehouse for Niagara Packers Limited.[2]

In 1994, the third station building was destroyed by an electrical fire. The original station building built by the Grand Western Railway is the only building that remains to this date. It currently sit vacant and it is not used by VIA Rail.
