The Greater Richmond Transit Company, or GRTC, is the transit operator in Richmond, Virginia. It also serves Henrico and Chesterfield counties with express service to Petersburg, VA.

History

The GRTC Transit System was founded in 1973 following the closure of the Virginia Transit Company. In 1989, the City of Richmond and Chesterfield County bought GRTC allowing both localities to respectively have 50% ownership of the transit system, though the City of Richmond wholly owned the transit system prior to that year. Henrico's service is provided through a service contract with GRTC.

The GRTC Transit System was given the "Best Transit System in North America" award by APTA in 2008. In 2010, all GRTC operations were moved to their new Belt Boulevard headquarters and the old facility at 101 S. Davis Avenue was closed and later sold.

Routes

Route were changed effective April 20th, 2014 when the Downtown Transit Center (located at 9th and Leigh Streets in Downtown Richmond) opened for service. Most of the route numbers are from the Virginia Transit Company days and run along the original electrified streetcar routes that operated in the late 1800s.

Routes with an X are Express routes that operate Monday-Friday during peak periods. Otherwise, the routes are local routes.
