76 Hayes Limited was a limited-stop bus route operated by the Detroit Department of Transportation in Detroit, Michigan, United States. All local service along the former path of route is currently provided by routes 34 Gratiot and 38 Plymouth.

Route Details

At the time of discontinuation, this route provided limited-stop service during weekday rush hours from downtown Detroit to East 8 Mile Road via Gratiot Avenue, East Outer Drive and Hayes Street.

History

  • October 22, 1945 - Service begins as a Detroit Street Railway route called Gratiot-Hayes Express. The downtown terminus was alongside the JL Hudson department store at Gratiot and Farmer Street. Initially, service is provided all day and local service is provided along Hayes and East Outer Drive to Harper Avenue, where limited-stop service begins to Saint Antoine Street, with a single stop at East Grand Boulevard.
  • 1951 - Limited-stop service along Gratiot reduced to weekday rush hours.
  • November 5, 1962 - Route renamed Hayes Express after a separate Gratiot Express route begins service.
  • July 1, 1974 - Service carried on by DDOT.
  • 1980 - Downtown service modified to loop via Randolph Street, Monroe Street, Michigan Avenue, Griswold Street and Grand River Avenue to Farmer.
  • 1997 - Route renamed Hayes Limited. In addition, local service now operates south to Gratiot and Harper, with limited-stop service continuing from there.
  • 2001 - Downtown terminus moved to Capitol Park.
  • 2009 - Downtown terminus moved to the newly-opened Rosa Parks Transit Center.
  • June 25, 2011 - Service discontinued.
