Detroit Department of Transportation 1001-1148 were General Motors Corporation T6H-5307A buses built in Pontiac, Michigan in 1975.

These were the first buses purchased new by DDOT and the last New Look buses purchased for the city of Detroit. They sported other firsts as well: first DDOT buses in a numbering scheme that would be used until 2010, first to display the current route numbering and naming system used today, first Detroit buses since the 1940's to feature side destination signs, first buses with computerized wheel-lock control braking system to prevent skidding, first buses with foot-operated directional signal switches, first buses with plush cushioned brightly-colored seats and first buses with improved interior lighting (lighting was moved from the center aisle to the advertising panels along the sides).

In June 1974, the Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority was awarded $9.1 million in federal and state grant money to be used to purchase 148 new buses for the Detroit Street Railway, which at the time was slated to undergo restructuring the following month and renamed the Department of Transportation. In January 1975, SEMTA obtained an additional $12.5 million federal grant for 89 additional buses. Nearly 80% was allocated towards new DDOT buses, the remaining 20% would go towards new buses for SEMTA's suburban operations. The local share money was obtained through a special half-cent state gasoline and weight tax diverted to mass transit.

Two orders which totaled 196 buses were placed with GMC, with 148 slated for DDOT and 48 for SEMTA. An order for 51 additional buses for DDOT was later awarded to AM General.

Delivery began in June 1975. The vehicles, which cost $62,000 each, were purchased by SEMTA with federal and state money, but were leased to DDOT for only $1 per year per bus. They were formally unveiled by Mayor Coleman A. Young on Tuesday, June 10, 1975.

In the mid-1980's, a number of units were rehabbed by Blitz Body Corporation and repainted into the then-current DDOT scheme. The 10 buses that ended up never getting rehabbed were retired by 1990 and by 1996, the last vehicles in this series were retired.

Fleet numbers from this series were later reused for a 2010 order of New Flyer D40LF buses.
