History
Main article: Trolleybuses in Vancouver
Up until 2020, the 9 was one of over a dozen routes that made up Vancouver's trolleybus network. However, due to the construction of the Broadway Subway, the route was revised to run with diesel buses temporarily until the completion of construction work in 2025.
Trolleybus service along the Broadway corridor was initially only between Commercial Drive and Main Street, replacing a former streetcar route. Introduced as the Broadway East–Robson route in 1949, service ran between Denman Street & Davie Street and Commercial Drive & E. Broadway. When service out to Alma Street was introduced between 1950 and 1951, the service along Broadway ran as two routes: the Broadway East and the Broadway Crosstown. The Broadway East also extended to Renfrew Loop during this time. Route numbers were introduced in October 1952 as well, resulting in the 2 Broadway East and the 9 Broadway Crosstown.
In February 1953, the 2 and the 9 were merged as the 9 Broadway as a diesel service during a transition before the two sections' wires were merged and connected in May 1953.
