Canadian Vickers MR-63

Interior layout example of a refurbished MR-63.

The Canadian Vickers MR-63 is a metro (subway) car built for the Montreal Metro from 1965 to 1967. They were designed by Jacques Guillon et Associés, the firm also responsible for the Métro's logo.[1] The trains run in sets of three with a trailer car between two powered cab cars. Their 2.5 metre width was specified to allow for the construction of a double track inside a single tunnel, lowering the cost of construction. The use of rubber tires was selected to handle the sharp inclines. The MR-63 takes design queues from the Paris Metro's MP 59 which is of similar width and runs on tires. The contract to build the cars was awarded to Canadian Vickers in 1963, and that same year, a full-sized mock-up of the MR-63 was displayed at the Palais du Commerce. Three-hundred-sixty-nine cars were produced.[2] As the oldest class in the fleet, the MR-63 cars will eventually be replaced by the MPM-10.

The MR-63 cars were delivered in the characteristic light blue paint scheme with a white stripe running under the windows, flowing down to cover the lower front of the car. The round headlights were housed in an oval socket. Inside, walls and ceilings were tan and seats were warm grey with dark brown vinyl cushions. The seating arrangement had two back to back, 2+2 seats with one aisle facing seat beside the doors.

On July 9, 1990, the STCUM awarded a contract for the refurbishment of the MR-63 cars to Canadian National's shops (later becoming AMF Technotransport) in Pointe-Saint-Charles, Quebec. They were fitted with new white molded plastic seats which had a speckled pattern on the sitting surface. The ceiling was redone with new panels, ventilator fans, speakers, and light fixtures like those on the MR-73 cars. Prior to refurbishment, advertisements were placed over the light diffusers. Ad racks are now installed over the door pockets with the Metro map in select racks. The headlights were modified with a larger rectangular bezel around the oval one, and the livery was adjusted to match that of the MR-73 with the white stripe running along the front.

Following implementation on the MR-73 cars, the STM began installing full spectrum lighting on the MR-63 cars in 2007. Beginning April 2010 the STM modified the interiors on two sets to increase their capacity and ease entry and exit. Prototype (set) A had a total of 22 single seats removed from the ends of cars with three-part stanchions added. Prototype (set) B had a total of 18 single seats removed from the middles of cars and 22 three-part stanchions added.[3] Another modification was the switch to LED headlights by the end of 2011 on all the cars.
