Brampton Transit Downtown Terminal is a transit terminal located in Brampton, ON. It is located in downtown Brampton at the northwest corner of Main Street and Nelson Street, on the same site as the Brampton Executive Centre, and is serviced by Brampton Transit, GO Transit, and Greyhound bus services. It's located southeast of the GO Transit / VIA Rail Brampton rail station and GO Kitchener line. The present terminal replaced an older downtown terminal to the south, where Brampton City Hall currently resides.

History

George Street Transit Terminal

In December 1978, the city authorized $50,000 to go towards constructing an off-street transit terminal, built in the George Street Municipal Parking Facility [1]. Construction of the new George Street Transit Terminal was completed for the city in October 1979 at a cost of $89,890.67, which including paving, building the platforms and installing the shelters for the new bus terminal[2]. Built between George St. and Main St. north of Wellington and a small park, and south of the municipal parking lot, essentially the new terminal was a separated one-way roadway between the streets with bus platforms and shelters along the south side.

As well as Brampton Transit's local services, GO Transit also operated routes out of the terminal. In the early-mid 1980's Mississauga Transit operated a branch of their 19 Hurontario up Main Street to the George St. terminal, but this appears to have been short-lived.

Prior to this off-street terminal, the official downtown transfer point for bus routes was on-street at the "Four Corners" (Queen and Main) to the north.

Downtown Transit Centre

In 1987, the city of Brampton made a move to expropriate a number of properties along Main Street, Nelson Street West and George Street to accumulate land for a new transit terminal[3]. After sorting out land acquisitions from property owners, construction of a new transit terminal and underground parking garage at George & Nelson began. Part of the property acquired was once the Brampton Coal & Gas / Brampton Fuels dealer south of the rail line.

The new Downtown Transit Centre (as it was known) was opened for operation in July of 1990, but it was officially opened on Thursday, September 19th 1991. Plans were to have the official opening and plaque unveilings the previous fall, but low ridership due to the recession and a 10-week transit strike at the time delayed both its official opening. The $1.2 billion terminal was one of eight new transportation sites opened under the provincial government's $5 billion Let's Move Program introduced the prior year. Transit ridership numbers through the terminal when officially opened were 6000 daily passengers, and 400 bus trips out of the terminal.[4]

The old terminal site was closed, and along with the parking lot became part of the site of Brampton's new city hall building.

The terminal is basically a central platform (initially opened with nine bus bays), outfitted with indoor waiting areas, a terminal building for the sale of tickets, passes, etc. The terminal building and part of the waiting areas are located partially under the Brampton Executive Centre building. Entrance to the two-level underground parking is located off George Street, and an underground tunnel constructed in 1989 leads under the CN Halton Subdivision rail line to the GO Transit/VIA Brampton rail station downtown. Initially opening to Brampton Transit, GO Transit and a Grey Coach Lines service to Owen Sound (later becoming Greyhound). The present day Züm 501 also uses the terminal.

Minor route changes occurred over the years, most notably the 2 Main was taken out of the terminal and "gridlined", serving the stops outside the terminal on Main Street at Nelson, instead diverting inside the terminal and having to loop back to Main Street, often in busy rush hour traffic.

The terminal is a major transfer point between rail and transit services in the area, and transfer point for passengers between local Brampton Transit services and GO's Kitchener Line corridor trains. Additional routes to serve Brampton's growing neighbourhoods to the west and north have been added in recent years, including new Zum BRT routes. The new Hurontario-Main LRT was planned to service the downtown Brampton area, but due to the tight proximity and lack of room in the terminal any loops or end terminus locations would likely be off-site, possibly north of the CN rail line but still within easy walking distance of the terminal.
