The Blue Bird Micro Bird was a high floor type-A school bus offered on both Ford E-450 and GM van chassis. Models can come with single or dual rear wheels on the rear axle.

History

The Blue Bird Micro Bird was introduced in 1975 and was built on the Chevrolet/General Motors van chassis. The body was similar in design to that of the Blue Bird All American and conventional.

In 1992, Blue Bird and Girardin Minibus entered into an agreement to market the Girardin's MB product line in the United States. The MB-II and MB-IV were badged as "Blue Bird MBII/IV by Girardin". The MB-II used a single rear wheel chassis, while the wider MB-IV used a dual rear wheel chassis. The agreement lasted until 2000.

Blue Bird continued to produce their Micro Bird, and it was redesigned with a new roofline to yield more headroom. In 2002, the option for a compressed natural gas drivetrain became available with the Ford chassis.

In October 2009, Blue Bird and Girardin Minibus entered into a joint venture named Micro Bird. This move would consolidate Blue Bird's type-C and -D product line with Girardin's type-A product line. Therefore with Blue Bird focusing on their type-C and -D products, the Blue Bird Micro Bird was discontinued and replaced by Giradin's type-A products: the G5 dual wheel and MB-II single wheel. They are branded Blue Bird and are known as the Micro Bird by Girardin.

At the 2014 National Association for Pupil Transportation trade show in Kansas City, Missouri, Blue Bird introduced their Micro Bird T-Series. It is built on the new Ford Transit chassis and is available in single or dual rear wheel configurations. The new chassis and body combinations offers improved maneuverability and reduced weight.

Blue Bird unveiled a battery-electric powered Micro Bird G5 at the 2017 School Transportation News Expo. It is built on the Ford E450 chassis, has a range of up to 100 miles, and can be recharged in six to eight hours.
