Kensington Transit Centre was built in 1967 as a replacement facility for New Westminster Garage. Kensington (commonly abbreviated as KTC) became the base for Burnaby and New Westminster operations until it was in turn replaced by Burnaby Transit Centre in November 1996.

In addition to Burnaby and New Westminster routes, from 1973-1979 KTC also operated service to Coquitlam, Port Moody and surrounding areas. These operations were moved upon opening of Port Coquitlam Transit Centre For a brief time in 1974-75 newly introduced Surrey routes operated from the base until Surrey Transit Centre opened.

The opening of the Skytrain Expo Line in Jan 1986 meant a major restructuring of Burnaby and New Westminster bus routes, and the end of Express service to Downtown via Kingsway on routes 106 and 112 (96 and 55 prior to 1985). KTC took over operation of a number of East Vancouver routes in April of that year, including routes 26, 27, and 29.
