Amtrak Amfleet II

History
Order/Delivery
Pleased with the Amfleet I cars received in the mid-1970s, Amtrak placed an order for an additional 150 cars in March 1980. The first cars were delivered on October 28, 1981, with delivery concluding on June 11, 1983.
A number of improvements were made over the original Amfleet design to accommodate their use as long-distance coaches. These include having a door/vestibule at only one end of the coach, larger windows for improved sightseeing, and long-distance seating for 59 (including a single wheelchair seat). Unlike the Amfleet I food service cars with the snack bar in the centre of the coach, the lounge cars had their snack bar offset, resulting in additional dinette tables in one end, and a smaller seating/lounge in the opposite end.
Configuration
150 cars were ordered, configured as 125 long-distance coaches, and 25 lounge cars. 14 of the lounges were later reconfigured as "smoking lounges" with an enclosed and separately-ventilated lounge. All 25 lounge cars were converted to 'diner-lite' cars between 2006 and 2010.
Routes
Amfleet II cars are assigned to medium- and long-distance trains in the eastern United States, including the Adirondack, Cardinal, Carolinian, Crescent, Lake Shore Limited, Maple Leaf, Palmetto, and Silver Meteor/Silver Star.
When first delivered, they were assigned primarily to the Auto Train, Cardinal, and Silver Service routes. After the former two routes switched to Superliner equipment after the delivery of the Superliner II cars in the early 1990s, the Amfleet II cars were assigned to other routes.

Initially configured with 10 booths (seating 40) in the long end, with lounge seating for 27 in the short end.
14 coaches converted to "smoking lounges" in 1998-2000, with the short end converted to an enclosed and separately-vented lounge. These lounges received names, and are noted where known.
All cars were rebuilt to 'diner-lite' cars in 2006-2010; features 19 seats in a booth-style layout in the short end, and 7 tables plus a conductor's office in the long end.
