Amtrak Amfleet I

History
Order/Delivery
After Amtrak took over operation of intercity passenger operation, the newest cars were the Metroliner self-propelled cars; while their design was modern and popular, they were mechanically unreliable. To accommodate growing demand on the Metroliner trains, Amtrak decided to purchase locomotive-hauled cars of a similar design, which could operate over the entire length of the Northeast Corridor. Importantly, Budd still had the Metroliner car tooling set up, which allowed production to restart easily. Additional cars were later added to the initial order, which allowed Amtrak to replace its inherited fleet of older 1940-50s intercity cars.
The first order was placed in October 1973 for 57 cars; an additional 200 cars were ordered in June 1974, followed by 35 cars in October 1974, and a further 200 cars in April 1975, for a total of 492 cars. All cars were built at Budd's factory in the northeastern suburbs of Philadelphia, PA. The first cars were publicly unveiled at the factory on June 19, 1975, and were sent for testing in Colorado. Revenue service began on August 5, 1975. The cars were popular with the public, with Amtrak noting an 11% increase in ridership on trains using Amfleet cars. The final car was delivered on June 9, 1977.
The Amfleet cars were Amtrak's first locomotive-hauled cars equipped with head-end power (HEP) instead of steam heating, requiring them to run exclusively with locomotives equipped with HEP generators.
Configuration
A total of 492 Amfleet I cars were ordered, initially configured as 361 coach, 54 café, 40 club, and 37 dinette cars. As delivered, the Amfleet I cars had the following fleet numbers:
- 20000-20053: Café
- 20110-20146: Club (mixed Club/Coach seating)
- 20200-20253: Dinette
- 20675-20677: Club (full Club seating)
- 20750-20752: Dinette
- 21000-21270: Short-distance coaches
- 21800-21889: Long-distance coaches
None of the active Amfleet I cars have retained their original fleet numbers. Cars were renumbered multiple times as their configurations were changed, and as part of numerous upgrade and overhaul programs over their 40-plus year history.
Coaches
Amfleet I coaches were delivered in two configurations: 361 cars for short-distance use with 84 seats, and 90 long-distance cars with 60 seats. Each car had two washrooms at one end, while the long-distance cars also had two dressing rooms. Long-distance cars were also marketed as "leg-rest" cars, providing a more premium service.
Beginning in the early 1990s, a number of coaches were reconfigured to comply with ADA standards; both short-distance (216xx series) and long-distance (217xx series) cars were reconfigured. The modifications included adding wheelchair seating positions and increasing the size of the washrooms; this resulted in the removal of 3 rows of seats in short-distance coaches, and the dressing rooms in long-distance coaches.
Food Service cars
Food service cars are easily distinguishable from the exterior by the lack of windows in the middle of the car, and extra nameplates near the doors. On the interior, all food service cars had a snack bar located in the middle of the coach, with varying combinations seating configurations in either end.
Amcafé: Café cars were configured with coach seating in both ends. Most were reconfigured into dinette layouts over time.
Amclub: Club cars were modeled after "Parlour" cars, and contained roomier 2+1 seating in one end to provide first-class service, with coach seating in the other half. Three cars (20675-20677) were delivered in an all-club layout, and an additional five club cars were converted shortly afterwards to match them. Most club cars were converted to other seating layouts, including club/dinette, Metroliner first-class club cars, and regular coaches.
Amdinette: Dinette cars contain booth seating, typically with 6-8 tables per end. Cars delivered as dinettes had coach seating in the opposite end; later retrofits featured club/dinette or full dinette layouts. All currently active food service cars have either first class club/dinette or full dinette layouts.
Lounge cars were also created to operate on certain long-distance routes. These lounge cars contained informal seating in one half of the car, and typically had dinette booths in the opposite end. Five dinettes were converted to operate on the Inter-American route, while three club cars were converted for the Montrealer route.
With declining food sales in the 2000s and early 2010s, a number of food service cars were converted to coaches. These cars had windows added where the snack bar was located, but retain the (blank) nameplates beside the vestibule doors.
Sleeper
Two long-distance coaches (21867 and 21882) were experimentally outfitted in late 1977 with two roomettes, which were based on the modular Superliner roomette. The two roomettes replaced 12 seats, giving a seating capacity of 48. The roomettes were placed at one end of the car; it is unknown whether they were located in the washroom end (replacing the dressing rooms) or the opposite end of the car. The two sleepers were given the nickname Ampad, or perhaps unofficially Amsnooze.
These two coaches were primarily assigned to the Shenandoah route, which had switched to an overnight train in May 1978. Under federal rules, all overnight trains were required to provide sleeping accommodations; however, the Shenandoah's low ridership did not justify providing a full sleeper, which were in short supply at the time. The Ampad cars were replaced by a conventional Heritage sleeper in October 1979, after which time the two cars were converted back to regular long-distance coaches.
Rebuild/Refurbishments
Faced with increasing unreliability of the original Metroliner cars, in 1981 Amtrak replaced the self-propelled cars with locomotive-hauled refurbished Amfleet cars in 1981. The Metroliner fleet consisted of coaches, first-class Club, and dinette cars. Food service cars were numbered in the 209xx series, while coaches were in the 219xx series.
Many cars were rebuilt with trainline cables running through, which enabled push-pull operation. Retrofitted cars were renumbered, usually retaining the same last 3 digits. Café and full dinette cars were renumbered in the 43xxx series, coaches in the 44xxx series, and split club/dinette and split dinette cars in the 48xxx series.
In coordination with the launch of Acela Regional service in the Northeast Corridor, the "Capstone" rebuild program was launched in 2001 to refurbish the Amfleet I cars. Completed coaches were numbered in the 81xxx series (business class), 82xxx series (regular coach), or 85xxx (café). The rebuild program continued through the 2000s, with the final cars (including conversions to push-pull operation) completed in 2012.
Routes
Amfleet I cars are used on almost all single-level trains in the eastern and mid-western United States.
Replacement/Retirement
Amtrak announced an overhaul of the Amfleet I car interiors in September 2017; however, one year later in January 2019, a Request for Proposals was released to replace the entire series of Amfleet I cars plus the former Metroliner cab cars.
Three Amfleet cars were sold to excursion operator Railexco in May 2020; these are the first Amfleet cars retired and sold for reuse, rather than scrap as the result of accidents/derailments.
