TTC Toronto Transit Fare Box Sale

8 posts in this topic

Hi everyone,

My name is Dan and I'm the guy selling the TTC vintage fare boxes.

Just want to start by thanking David for inviting me to this site, I never knew it existed and can't believe the discussions you guys have(some hardcore stuff).

Someone else pointed out the fare box thread to me, too cool...

For everyone that has bought their fare boxes from me, I hope you're all happy with them.

I bought my first fare box 24 years ago and to this day, I still love it!

Anyways, here's the scoop.

These Fare Boxes have been retired from the Toronto Transit Commission almost a quarter century.

Shortly after retiring them, for a limited time the commission sold a few of these boxes to interested TTC employees(that's when I got mine).

After the sale the remaining fare boxes were stored and later sold to a surplus buyer. Last month, I accidently found that surplus buyer.

After years of storage, the buyer of these fare boxes has decided to start selling them and wants me to pilot the sales operation.

Since the TTC is currently in the middle of a United Way campaign, our plan was to offer the TTC employees first crack at the boxes with a portion of each sale to be donated. The idea is to run an ad with the Coupler(TTC employee newsletter) and have posters posted at all TTC divisions. The problem with doing all this is "time". We should finally have the posters posted by mid-week next week. As for the Coupler, next issue isn't released for another couple of weeks. We are also raffling off one fare box through the United Way Campaign, thats already on the go. Raffle tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5

So in the wait of it all, we also decided to post them on Craigslist and Kijiji. My God, the responses have been incredible!

A few buyers(members from this site) suggested I post the fare box info for all the members to see, so here it is.

I never sold fare boxes on eBay before, just bought them.

I know the person that sold them on eBay a few months ago, she sold 4 or 5 of them, one after another.

I was one of those buyers, bought mine for $215US. pretty sure it was the lowest price of all the ones she sold on eBay.

Theres a great story why she sold these fare boxes on eBay, but its not my place to say why, she might want the reason kept personal.
