In case some of you weren't aware, 6400 has been released from rebuilding. Here are a couple of shots of it taken by VIA engineer Terry B.

It's been out for a few weeks now, there was another photo circulating online but the link has since died. The paint scheme is so-so in my opinion, it could be worse (a la 6429 barf green colour :P).

However, the locals says it's still not tracing...so don't expect to see it in Toronto just yet!

Or in Toronto anytime from what the rumor mill is stating.

Would seem that it will be used on the Montreal - Halifax trains first.

This engine was supposed to be out in August, along with LRC Club 3451, now I wonder when that will be out?

Looks good on the F40. I just hope the LRC's will keep their grey, and not go teal like the Renaissance coaches! But if they change the navy blue on the underside for the forest green, that would probably look good.

I heard that the LRC cars will be overhauled and repainted into the Ren colours, 3451 is supposed to be the protoptype, but who knows what will happen!

So how many engines and LRCs are they repainting? Is it just the 6400s that they're repainting?

I am under the impression that the whole F40 fleet, road no's 6400-6459, are due to go through a mid-life rebuild as they are reaching or have reached 20 years of service already (I remember their introduction in the late 80's!) and will be repainted as part of that process, but hopefully someone else can be more clear on that. Other than that, the only active locomotives are the 21 P42s which have carried this paint job since their introduction.

I am equally under the impression that a refurbishment program for the LRC coaches is in the works, the VIA1 cars had an interior overhaul in the early 2000's but the other 75 have not had major work done since the early 90's rebuild. I am not sure how much exterior work is going to happen as part of that.

I hope someone else can elaborate more on plans for both the locos and the rolling stock.

Everything is depenant on funding. In fact, the release of 6400 was delayed simply because VIA didn't have the money to pay CAD-Lachine for the work they did.

As well, the work being done is far more elaborate than just a simple "mid-life rebuild". 6400 has come out of the shops with a new engine, new alternators, new bodywork in many places, and a completely new and modern computerized control system. The rest of the units, should they go in for a similar rebuild may as well receive a separate HEP engine and package.

None of the LRC coaches have ever recieved any sort of major bodywork of any sort. The interior overhaul done to the VIA1 cars was strictly cosmetic, and did not affect the structure or mechanical systems of the cars at all.

What 3451 is recieving is a complete rebuild...it was been stripped to the frame of the car, and any structural parts needing replacement were removed and replaced. It will be recieving a new interior (if it hasn't received it already), and a new onboard computerized equipment fault management system that should make it easier to detect any faults in the electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical systems of the car, and potentially work around them or replace them faster. And on top of all this, it will be recieving a new paint scheme, reportedly similar/identical to the scheme of 6400 and the 900's.

No idea when 3451 is due though.
