VIA Rail Canada

Waiting for 30 Minutes

Recommended Posts

I was walking by Via Rails yard in vancouver and I saw one of their old F9's in a siding parked behind a dome car, I saw a note saying " Do Not Enter Due to Possible mold!" I'm guessing it is possible as it's used as a yard switcher, but it's been awhile since I've even seen it move!

If I'm thinking of the right unit, I believe the unit you saw was 6300. I've been meaning to talk to someone at VIA about seeing if I could arange an escort and go snap a couple of photos. Last spring the Royal Hudson was parked right behind her. I managed quite a few tips comming in on Greyhound trips just for making that small detour so that passengers could see and, if they had cameras handy, take pictures of those two unit one behind the other.

I just read this:

By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL - Three young men are dead after they were struck by a VIA Rail train in southwest Montreal early Sunday.

Police said the train was on its way to Montreal from Toronto when the accident occurred around 3 a.m., about 10 kilometres from the train station.

They said five people, between the ages of 17 and 19, were walking next to the railway tracks and three of them were hit by the train.

"The death of two young men was pronounced on the scene. One other man was transported to hospital where his death was pronounced," said Montreal police Const. Danny Richer.

The two survivors were also taken to hospital, suffering from shock.

The circumstances of the accident are unclear, but police say the victims may have been spraying graffiti.

"Investigators are still on the scene trying to know what happened," Richer said.

The train was carrying 45 passengers, who were bused to the nearest station after the incident.

Richer said police have yet to identify the victims and investigators were expected to talk to the survivors later Sunday.

Wow that is horrible...but hey they were trespassing and were doing vandalism, so they accepted the risks already and paid for it.

But just looking at the grammar, was this retranslated, since it isn't written very intelligently .

Yes, 6300 was that unit. She spends of her time sitting parked in the yard rusting. I don't know what her future with will be but I suggest when you're in Vancouver, head down to the via rail yard on Terminal avenue and take a look!

The "Trains" show will be going to Via's Vancouver facilities next Monday. I am absolutely certain there will be a lot of interest in 6300, being the last of her kind for Via.

www.bctrains.org

She is sidelined, but is awaiting repair last I heard; until late this summer she was running. Will see if I can get more info tomorrow.

Not sure what they mean by train 4301, it doesn't exist on the fleet roster on our wiki

It was 905 on train 43.

Here is a photo I took of it passing through Kingston, after being released from the accident scene. Notice the missing ditch light. I was told that there was more damage down the left hand side from where the car hit the engine as it spun around.

Actually, it is the last FP9A in the fleet. It seems that 6309 is no longer owned by VIA.

Dan

Actually, it is the last FP9 in the fleet. There were never any FP9A's or FP9B's.

Although many railroads like to call them FP9A's. CN for a while referred to some F9B's as FP9B's. Might as well a GP9 a GP9A.

All of CN's manuals called them FP9As and FP9Bs, as did the datasheets. I don't like the terminology personally, but it's hard to argue with the ones doing the operation and maintenance of the machines.

And besides, if you want to be really technical, 6300 is an FP9Au.

Shouldn't that be FP9ARM???

Also what about 6301? Last I heard this was still owned by VIA and was kept undercover at the MMC. I could be wrong however.

My apologies - you are absolutely correct.

I have not heard or seen anything about 6301 - at all. I would think that after all these years it would have popped up in a photo if it was there.

I was recently told that 6301 is still on the roster, was supposed to be the MMC shunter much the same way as 6300 at the VMC, but likewise I haven't seen any photos either.

I can't see why they would use 6301 as a yard switcher, especially since VIA has two SW1000s that do the job a hell of a lot more easily than an F-unit.

I too have have heard of 6301 being at MMC but I didn't think it was operational.

I have a photo of 6301 at MMC back in 2002 with sister 6309 (which later went to Exporail).

I was told because they wanted to have something HEP equipped, but it never happened. Like you said they have the two switchers.

Anyway got a good look at RDC-4 6250 and RDC-2 6215 this morning at White River, watched them leave on train 185 to Sudbury. Also got to see FP9A 6510 in Thunder Bay. So much nostalgia today, made me think I was back in the early 1990's!!!

With the topic on switchers, at VMC, since 6300 was suppose to be the switcher being used, instead I always see an F40 assembling trains or moving cars around! Besides, I haven't seen any SW1000 or 1500 at VMC.

There are no SW1000 or any other switcher at the VMC, they always use mainline locomotives, and not always 6300.

The only switchers VIA had, four of them numbered 201-204, were assigned to the TMC and MMC. Both the TMC assigned units were retired and sold years ago

I wasn't sure where to post this but here is an interesting ad promoting VIA's LRC.

The scene of the kid stacking cards ... the train was stationary and they had a monitor behind the window showing the scenery fly by.

I mean, there's no way it could have been moving, especially on CN maintained track ;)
