Yeah but 75/70 is stainless steel only on Thursdays and Fridays. The conversion of 73/78 to LRC cut the use of stainless steel more than in half since 73/78 used HEP2s daily except for Saturdays.

thanks for clearing at up,  didn't know train 70 was steel only on Thursday and Fridays.

Are the VIA and Amtrak maple leaf trains going to be detoured on the Canpa Sub this weekend?

Amtrak backing up over CP Milton to position into Union this morning.

From a strategic point of view it would be nice if VIA could store a few westbound trains east of Union to reduce dependence on the LSW to position trains. For Amtrak I assume security concerns would require those consists to be within a yard rather than storage tracks.

The Canadian apparently took the scenic route to get to Union for its overnight departure. It came in from the east which means it must have taken the Weston, York and Bala subs.

Edit: After taking the Campa.

The Canadian was serviced at Don Yard, not at TMC yesterday.

Yeah, I just found out about that. (Although how they did it has me curious if anyone took any pictures.)

They just need to empty the septic tanks, take on water and Fuel. And then linens and food can be loaded on the platform.

Don't know how they would deal with any mechanical issues.  Swap cars from TMC and the cut out the bad cars and replace them with one from TMC?

Do they have the ability to wash the train in the yard?

Train 2 has left Saskatoon only 9 minutes late:

https://reservia.viarail.ca/tsi/GetTrainStatus.aspx?l=en&TsiCCode=VIA&TsiTrainNumber=2-&TrainInstanceDate=2018-09-17

Train 1 is currently approaching Edmonton a few minutes early:

https://reservia.viarail.ca/tsi/GetTrainStatus.aspx?l=en&TsiCCode=VIA&TsiTrainNumber=1-&TrainInstanceDate=2018-09-16

You can play around with the date stamp in the URLs to find previous departures...

Train 1 has been arriving in Vancouver early pretty consistently. Big change from the 12-24 hours late every trip just a few weeks ago.

Bad news from the HBRY. Only months after VIA derailed, now there has been a fatality on a freight service which derailed southwest of Thompson near Ponton, MB. Although it is not mentioned on VIA's home page, presumably Winnipeg-Gillam service is suspended for the present.

Noticed this evening (Tuesday) that the Canadian that departed Toronto on Saturday is seven hours late nearing Hinton and that the Canadian that departed Vancouver on Sunday is four hours late. The westbound seems to be much later than usual. Any particular reason for that other than snow?

We'll see what time VIA 1 makes into Vancouver today. They left Ashcroft 4 hours late but managed to gain back half an hour by the time they got to Boston Bar. If they get a relatively clear shot into Vancouver from Hope (stop laughing ... ) they should be able to make up another 2-3 hours anyway.

Still an improvement over the 12-24+ hours late they would get here on the old schedule.

It seems to have arrived Vancouver just over 60 minutes late (after having entered the Rockies almost 9 hours late). Should be updated here very soon:

#1 has often been late leaving Edmonton, on the order of -7 to -9 hours, and that was before any of the recent small amounts of snow. Construction blocks west of Edmonton were certainly slowing things down when I last chased #1. I would imagine that's still the case.

They would have been on time into Vancouver on Monday, but Rocky Mountaineer got priority to go up the Grandview cut first, and it had to wait for the Amtrak Cascades to pull out as well.  The new schedule has a lot of padding to deal with freight delays in the Vancouver area.  #1 gets over 4 hours to get from Abbotsford to Vancouver, without waiting for other trains that would only take 90 minutes.
