VIA Rail Canada

Waiting for 30 Minutes

The turntable is physically shorter than a passenger car - from what I remember seeing it seemed to be only slightly longer than an F40 - but with the overhang at the ends apparently the trucks/wheelbase of a passenger car will fit.

Dan

Reminds me of watching the Victoria, BC shop staff turn an 85 ft RDC on the 80 ft turnable.

Here's a question...is that ex Metra 8755 cab car still sitting in VIA's TMC? Last I saw it was parked near the turntable alone.

It originally came in with a bunch of other cars that are now scrapped. Does anyone know the whole story with them? A few were damaged while in transit to whoever/wherever, and ended up sitting at the TMC until they were scrapped.

I last saw it about this time last year, and it was looking like it was the next one to be torn apart - the front-end loader was standing at the ready, and there were car bit scattered around it.

What likely happened is that CN's (or the shipping broker's) insurance paid for the damaged cars. But they would have had to wait until everything was settled with the insurance companies before they could go ahead and scrap them.

A few of them made it up to St-Eustache Quebec where they were stored for a while. None were ever put in service. I believe there were a few lawsuits that prevented them from entering service:

It's still there, tucked in with the LRC locos and RDC cars at the southwest end.

A few new things about the TMC,

Found out the company operating out of there, CRCR, Canadian Rail Collision and Refurbishment, looks like they are doing some sort of work on a Vancouver Skytrain car. http://www.crcr.ca/ . Funny their website says they are operating out of VIA rail's facility in Missisauga Ontario

As well as storing trains during the day, GO Transit is now servicing a few trains in the shop bays there, mainly to empty toilets. Also a few bays on the south west end are being used to store extra equipment away from the elements.

Why did VIA stop using the LRC Locos?
They were worn out?

That's likely the main reason.

There were others though: even though they are rated at 3750hp, in reality they can only pull a 6-car train by themselves. The P42's are quite a bit more powerful and so can accelerate a longer train faster. As well, because of their design it was not easy to maintain them. Big items had to be pulled out of the roof, and if you're over 6 feet tall forget about going back into the engine compartment. And I'm sure that the non-standard Hitachi control systems - though apparently reliable - that Bombardier used in them probably didn't help when they got tired and worn out.

There was nothing terribly wrong with the locos themselves, but they used a lot of non-standard parts that were too expensive to fix/replace. Other than that, they were really good locomotives. VIA still has a few of them sitting in the Montreal maintenance centre, and they're for sale, if you want one! http://www.viarail.ca/en/about-via-rail/bu...ling/whats-sale

In fact, a set of four ex-Metra coaches were put into regular AMT service. I was very young, and I don't have any pictures, but I was lucky enough to ride them. I watched trains go by daily then and never saw them again, after that one day (weekend?) of service. I think it was a weekend. But I found some photos by Lorence Toutant, and they were on the Blainville line...that must have been a weekday... I can say for sure they didn't stay in service long - definitely not more than a week.

They didn't use cab cars or electric generator units (for HEP) - just one locomotive on each end. FP7 # 1302 was on one end, and leased Amtrak F40 # 311 on the other.

Here is the link to photos I found: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?...6315&nseq=2

If this discussion continues, it probably deserves its own thread.....(just my opinion)

Some are also parked in Toronto across the GO yard, wherever that is.

One would look nice at John St...maybe VIA can "sell" one for a "dollar" ;)

VIA is only allowed to sell them for whatever their actual value is.

Which leaves us with two options - either we get them to lend us one like Exporail, or we buy one outright for about $125K.

Not just that....we've got two pairs of seats identical to those here in the office. Apparently they were from Tempo #370, but like those came from the first order of the CC&F coaches.

Dan

Arent we going back to red seats with the refurbishment?
