Codiac Transit

Unit 811 has displaced 720 for the #50 Red Line. Not that most people would have known 720 was typically a Red Line: it spent as much time in the shop as on the road... I'm curious whether the lemon of the fleet will be reassigned or mostly parked and forgotten.

720 is the demo with a different radiator grill, so there might be some other differences with that bus as well. I can't remember which bus it was (720 or 721), but I think one of them had a weird button for the rear door instead of the usual waving your hand for the sensor to pick up and open the door.

720 was a prototype or test mule of sorts: nothing on it is standard, including the wiring doesn't match diagrams, etc. Servicing the damn thing usually involves a lot of emails back and forth with Nova with pictures of what it actually looks like vs what the manuals/diagrams tell you. It's a very special unit, indeed...

And yes, the back door works via a big, green glowing button.

Special as in "amongst the first to be retired once the fleet is fully accessible"? :P

It looked like it was out on the 68 today, but got pulled this afternoon after less than a day out...

Special as in I'm sure as soon as they can get away with it, some transit operator, somewhere will get a GREAT deal on a 2011 LFS.

The ad will likely feature statements like:

- One of a kind - You will NOT find another one like this...

- Regularly and thoroughly "maintained."

- This bus was only in service an average of a couple days per week...

- Intermittent curbside destination sign adds an air of adventure and mystique for your riders.

Based on the figure of 19 new buses and what I've observed so far... (Numbers might not be accurate, much less one day to the next, especially as buses aren't officially assigned to a specific route), but here's a hypothetical list:

50 Red Line - 811

51 Green Line - 800, 801, 817

52 Blue Line - 802, 803, 814

60 Bessborough - 812

61 Elmwood - 804, 815(B)

62 Hildegard - 805

63 Lewisville - 810

64 Hospitals - 806, 816(B)

65 Killam - 807

66 Caledonia - 808

67 Edinburgh - 818

68 Salisbury - Sorry! SOL

70/71 Mapleton/Coliseum - 813

80 Gunningsville - 430

81 Riverview - 530

93 Champlain - 700

94 Centrale - 701

94 Amirault - 850

So, they pretty well have enough to cover at least one per (Moncton) route already.

Here's what their tracker is reporting for today:

50 - 811

51 - 800, 801, 802

52 - 721, 803, ??? (tracking unit taken from 408)

60 - 812

61 - ??? (tracking unit taken from 514)

61B - 805

62 - 808 this morning, switched to 505

63 - 810

64 - ??? (tracking unit taken from 510)

64B - 804

65 - 807

66 - 806

67 - ??? (tracking unit taken from 501)

68 - 720, later replaced by 603

70/71 - ??? (tracking unit taken from 513)

80 - 502 (this one could also be replaced)

81 - 530

93 rush hour - 700

94 - 701

93/95 - 850

I'm making the assumption that anything not low-floor is being pilfered for one of the new units, and I have nothing for 813-818 listed. Based on what you were able to see, this might mean that Codiac is retiring some of the ex-STM units, possibly due to sheer age of them. Let me get what I have in an actual readable format, and I'll put it up here as well

It's also possible that those 500s were out today... As I said, my "list" was a hypothetical, to show that it's feasible that there could be B routes with 800s on them. :)

And yes, any high floor bus (except 430) are D-O-N-E, done like dinner...

EDIT: I did see 814 on the Blue Line, and I caught a glimpse of 817, but didn't see the route number...

I'm aware it's hypothetical, I wasn't holding you to it :)

Codiac does seem to use the same bus on the same route every day (except when that bus needs repairs). The two I'm most skeptical about are 510 and 514, as the previous buses for the 61 Elmwood (805) was on the 61B and the 806 (bus for the 64 Hospitals) was on the 66 Caledonia as well. However, this is all without actually seeing which buses are out.

Thanks for the heads-up on 814; do you know which part of the city you were in when you saw 817? It might indicate what route it was on and which other bus might be retired.

Main St, by Highfield would have been one of the 1111 North routes...

I've been trying to figure the tracker thing since you mentioned that... lol I found vehicles_json in the source code for Bus Catcher, but I've looked at the source for the route pages and I can't find where it pulls the vehicle ID or anything.

I also found this interesting bit...

<!--
  <dt class="main-header"><a href="" id="nav_btn_dynamic_arrival_times" style="color: #769569;"><img src="images/menu/catchyourbus_codiac.png" class="menu-icon" />Catch Your Bus</a></dt>
  <dd class="main-header-content bus-catcher-content">
  <form>
  <div style="width:100%; padding: 5px;">
  <div id="dynamic_catch_description">
  Buses don't always run to schedule, use this tool to see if your bus is early or late
  </div>

  <div style="width:45%; float: left; padding: 5px 0px 5px 15px" id="dynamic_choose_routes">
  Select Route
  <select id="dynamic_arrival_times_routes" size="5" style="width:100%"><option value="-1"></option></select>
  </div>

  <div style="width:45%; float: left; padding: 5px 0px 5px 30px" id="dynamic_choose_stops">
  Select Stop
  <select id="dynamic_arrival_times_stops" size="5" style="width:100%"><option value="-1"></option></select>
  </div>
  <br style="clear: both"/>
  <span id="show_hide_stops_span"><input type="checkbox" selected id="show_hide_stops">Show Stops</span>
  </div>
  </form>
  <br style="clear:both;"/>
  </dd>
  -->
  <!--
  <dt class="main-header"><a href="" id="nav_btn_text_message" style="color: #007db9;"><img src="images/menu/textmessaging.png" class="menu-icon" />Text Messaging</a></dt>
  <dd class="main-header-content bus-catcher-content">
  </dd>

-->

It's commented out right now, but it looks like dynamic arrival times are on the way for the website, as well as some text message feature(?), which I'm guessing will be some kind of receive a text when the bus gets near feature? Maybe?

If it was an 1111 Main route, it would've been on the 64; the 67 was being served by 501 and the 80 was served by 502, but I figure those are a bit more legit and those would both be coming from the other side of the road anyway.

The routes_json element in that is also important, for reasons that will become apparent in a second.

  1. Grab that list and match each id element to its ta_route_id element; for example, 1 would turn into 50
  2. To check route 50, navigate to http://traxx.moncton.ca/routes/1/vehicle_location_reports.json; the 1 changes to whichever route you wish to track
  3. Take the ta_vehicle_id of the route and reference the attached CSV
  4. That's the bus running that particular route

Note: for the most part, the vehicles_json list was accurate before 800-808 arrived (401 was the exception). Starting with 800-808, the list doesn't line up at all, and that trend continued this time around. The attached CSV also shows retired buses; the last number in each cell is the active bus number showing up with that respective ta_vehicle_id.

It looks like the only buses that either haven't seen service or haven't been observed are 813, 815, 816, and 818 (818 isn't showing up on the Codiac website yet).

830 has appeared, at least in the tracker... So...

800 Series, at this point is: 800-808, 810-817, 830, 850.

Also I'm thinking the IDs may have been shuffled around with all the high floors being retired and whatnot... I might just send them a quick message asking what's been retired and/or if any of the older LFS are retired yet.

I was about to mention the same thing about 830; I'd say that the end for high-floors in Moncton is happening now, and it'll be happening next year here in Fredericton (4 new buses next year to replace the 1999 RTSes and the two LFSes that don't have the ramp in place).

Looks like the new buses are officially 810-817, 830, 850, and the trackers were replaced as follows:

810 from 311, 811 from 315, 812 from 316, 814 from 408, and 850 from 450. The ones left to be determined are 813, 815, 816, and 817, although if the theory from yesterday is correct about 817 being on the 64, it means that 510 is likely retired.

It looks like the tracker from 409 was put in a bus running the 51 today, so that might be for any of 813, 815, or 816.

Pardon me for butting in... but I was under the assumption that Codiac got 9 LFS buses delivered in 2017. If they have 810-817, 830, 850, that would add up to 10 units.

Also, I'm just curious... now that 408 is retired and stripped of its tracking components, did it ever see any revenue service after the CTHF charter on September 17th? It is always sort of neat when a fan trip is the final assignment for a particular bus.

I was under that same assumption, originally, bit there's a press release that states 19 buses were received so far, the bus catcher app has 810-817, 830 and 850 and I've personally seen 810, 811, 812, 814, 817 and 850. So, I guess we all stand corrected... :)

Also 408, as far as I know, did not see revenue service after that trip.

I thought that 830 wasn't even showing up until next spring with the 4 buses Moncton ordered at the same time, but maybe that batch of 5 was combined with the first batch of 5 ordered last fall (850 plus the other half of 810-817, I guess).

Speaking of 850, when I saw it a week and a half ago, it didn't have any branding on it whatsoever; has that changed?

I'm thinking that they might have been in a rush to roll them out all over, and putting one in Dieppe and Riverview even though theirs technically aren't here yet? Next batch will all go to Moncton instead?

I might try to see if anyone knows anything...

And, to answer your question, 850 still has no livery... They might be waiting to do all three at once? 700 and 701 were never updated to the new one, after all...

When I looked at the assignment board when I went to the garage the day after the charter to try and get a picture of the 1 unit I was missing. 408 was listed as Garage. 501 seems to be being used as a bus to train drivers. It was parked in the same place as it was during our time at the garage with the Driver in Training cards in the window.

Looks like 830 has entered service this morning on the 81 Riverview, putting 530 on the rush-hour 80 runs.

Here's what we've figured out so far with the new buses, it looks like:

810 on the 63, tracker from 311

811 on the 50, tracker from 315, bumping 720 to the 68

812 on the 60, tracker from 316, bumping 721 to the 3rd 52 run

814 on the 52, tracker from 408, bumping 804 to the 64B

830 on the 81, tracker from 430, bumping 530 to the 80

850 on the 93/95, tracker from 450, bumping 700 to the 93

For the unknowns:

One on the 64, tracker from 510, bumping 806 to the 66 (Resurgo, this one is the most likely to fit your theory for 817, as the new bus on the 51 didn't start until Friday)

One on the 61, tracker from 514, bumping 805 to the 61B

One on the 51, tracker from 409, bumping 802 to the 67

 If the last one is in service, it's likely on the 70/71 combo, taking the tracker from 513

Also, assuming this is accurate, the wiki needs an update for sure; the retired buses would be the high floors (408, 409, 430, 450), as well as 510, 514, and *possibly* 513.

That would leave them with a fleet of 40 with 3 LFS retired or 41 with only two retired LFS. In either case, pretty well keeping in line with their usual statement on the subject, that "Codiac Transpo operates a fleet of 40 buses on 20  routes."

513 being replaced also makes sense from a timing perspective, as "513" started regular service on the 70/71 combo on the 14th, right around the same time as 811 and 814.

My *theory* places the replacements as follows:

311 -> 810 (known)

315 -> 811 (known)

316 -> 812 (known)

513 -> 813 (showed up at the same time as 811 and 814)

408 -> 814 (known)

409 -> 815 (408 went to 814, so there might be a connection like that)

514 -> 816 (last trip with 514 would be on the 13th; process of elimination for this one)

510 -> 817 (sighting of 817 around 1111 Main)

430 -> 830 (Riverview)

450 -> 850 (Dieppe; known)

Thanks for the updates @Resurgo and @ROSeaboyer! I must have been mistaken in thinking there were only 9 buses for 2017. With the fleet numbers confirmed I'll go update the Wiki pages.

With three of the ex-STM buses retired, there are 5 remaining (511-512, 515-516, 530); seems to fit perfectly with the 5 units (4 Moncton + 1 Riverview) on order for 2018. Guess the non-accessible early 500s will stick around for a while yet. As the oldest buses they shouldn't see much service even as relief buses, so their non-rampness won't be as much of an issue.
