Codiac Transit

I received a fleet list from Codiac Transit a couple of weeks ago and it was complete with VINs. Bus # 508 is indeed the same bus as the former # 507. I am not sure as to the reason why it was renumbered but my guess would be that it was involved in a fatal accident. Quite a few systems have renumbered buses when they were involved in fatal accidents.

That's exactly what happened; 507 was the vehicle involved in a fatal collision in early 2012.

Did they repaint the second hand Classics too? Was curious because they claim a bus shortage is the reason they are using a 7-passenger taxi van to operate the Magnetic Hill route this year from the Casino NB bus stop. Problem is that children must be in a car seat when in a passenger vehicle compared to a transit bus so parents now need to drag a car seat up to the park and large groups (ie. daycares, etc) need to provide 24 hour notice. Wonder what happens when more than 7 people want to take the shuttle on short notice?

Codiac Transpo is seeking to purchase 17 new buses to replace their aging fleet starting in 2017. That's enough to wipe out the remainder of their Classics, RTS's, and a few low floors.

From the CBC:

Looks like they are getting Provincial and Federal funding for most of the cost

Codiac recently put an initial batch of 9 new LFS's into service; from what it looks like so far, they got rid of their Classics, and the only RTSes still in use are 408, 409, 430 (owned by Riverview) and 450 (owned by Dieppe). These buses are numbered from 800 to 808 and, as of over the weekend when I was in Moncton, the only sort of decal applied to each is the bus number; they were completely white other than that. Unfortunately, I was unable to get any pictures of them.

Codiac has ordered an additional 5 Nova LFS, 4 will be purchased by Moncton and the 5th bus is being purchased by the town of Riverview.

2 new buses in the Codiac Transpo fleet that I saw driving around today, 810 and 812. Both look very similar to the previous series (800-808)

Thanks for confirming their fleet numbers, and that they are now in service. Five buses had been delivered on September 15th (and were visible for attendees of the CTHF charter the following weekend), with the other 4 delivered the next week; they were delivered all white with no fleet numbers.

Do we know if the 5th bus mentioned in @Silly Tilley's post will replace the ex-STM Nova (530), or the RTS (430)?

They went into service on Saturday (October 6th), at least 810 (replacing 501) on route 63 Lewisville and I think it was 814  812 (displacing 721) on the #60 Bessborough, one 850 was in Dieppe replacing good, old 450, too... I believe 430 will be the one replaced with the 800 Series unit on the way for Riverview, because the 500s aren't going anywhere quite yet, AFAIK.

  • 501 is now a spare, it seems,
  • 721 has become 52 C, instead of a 600 unit, alongside two 800 units
  • 450 is retired and parked out back, awaiting its fate, along with the other remaining RTS

EDIT: One correction (fleet number) and a couple new details

Two other possible fleet numbers (unconfirmed, obviously) are 811 and 850, both visible if you look at the page source for their bus catcher app; 811 was listed for a little while, but 850 just showed up in the last day or two. Either 850 is the Riverview bus or there's a new bus for Dieppe to replace 450 as well.

I'll be driving through Moncton tomorrow on my way back to Fredericton, so I'll see if I can catch a glimpse at the one going around Dieppe.

EDIT: Dieppe did authorize the purchase of a new bus last October, so the bus in question is likely that one.

800 Series are 800-816 and 850 at this time, and at least 4 more for Moncton (likely 817-820?) plus one for Riverview (830 to replace 430?).

I've been told there are yet some more to come, but details at this point are unknown... I'll use my psychic powers and guess it'll be more Nova LFS, like the other 40 something that came before.

The 2016 Novas are 800-808, so the 2017 Novas should be 810-817 and 850 if one is owned by Dieppe. No 809. The 2018 buses could start at 820, or jump into the 900s - Moncton has weird numbering strategies.

The numbering strategy, from what I can tell, is this:

Start at x00.

If a different city buys a bus, add 20. If the city you're adding 20 from is Moncton, add 30 instead.

Examples:

Moncton bought 400-409 over a few years, then Riverview and Dieppe each bought a bus. Riverview went to 430 (add 30 from 400), and Dieppe went to 450 (add 20 from 430).

Dieppe bought the first 3rd-gen LFSes that Codiac runs, so those got bumped to 700 and 701. When Moncton bought a couple ex-demo units, they added 20 and the numbers became 720 and 721.

Drove through Moncton today, and 850 is the new Dieppe bus; it's using the same tracking device that was in 450, so I'd say that it's official that 450 is now retired. I saw 430 going on the 80 Gunningsville this afternoon, so that bus is definitely still active for now. I did get the license plates for 810, 812, and 850 for when the wiki gets updated.

So, how can you tell which is which through Bus Catcher?

It's like a 4 step process that requires a bunch of ID-matching, but basically, in the source for the bus-catcher frame, there's a JSON string that has a list of buses; each bus has an ID, and the ID corresponds to what each route's location map is getting. It was a pain with some trial-and-error to figure it all out, though.

It looks like another new bus bumped 804 to the 64B runs; were you able to find out which bus that was?

Hmm... that's odd, but I'll keep my eyes peeled and/or might ask around if anyone knows or has a list of what's what.

More tidbits:

Check the obligatory photo op, as with any press release, and notice that there's 815 being posed on/around

Their site is showing buses 810-816 and 850 (for now) with the new shipment; I'd say 809 won't be a bus right now, as it seems like Codiac likes putting padding between numbers now since they had to renumber 507 to 508 after the fatal crash a few years ago (note the lack of 509 whenever the ex-STM buses arrived in 2012).

Another possibility is that the new buses could be 810-817 (8 buses), 830 (new bus for Riverview), 850 (the new Dieppe bus).

Also, since they have 10 *so far* with the new order, that sounds like the end of the run for the RTSes (408, 409, 430 [once 830 enters service], and 450), as well as some of the 500s that don't have the ramp available (I think this is 500-503, 510-516; 530 would be sticking around until Riverview gets another new bus, I believe).

500-503 don't have ramps, 510-516 and 530 have a slide out ramp at the rear door rather than a modern flip out design at the front... Whether or not they actually function is another thing, though... And yes, the RTS are done: they're parked in the back lot, along with the three classics.

500-503 will likely be the next to go, using your reasoning: they're not accessible... At all...

Oh neat, didn't know that about those buses.

Also, based on a number I saw a few years ago stating 40 buses in the Codiac fleet, keeping that number at 40 looks like it'll retire 408, 409, 500, 501 and 502 from the Moncton buses, 430 from Riverview, and 450 from Dieppe. That would mean an additional order of 8 buses (replacing 503 and 510-516), plus an additional new one for Riverview (replacing 530), would be needed to make the entire fleet accessible.
