Newlook/classic question

So i read that the newlooks had whipers similar to the classic for the 5301. On the Gatineau charter i mentioned having seen this:

Link picture, after a bunch of us were admiring the whipers in-action. Note the drivers side whiper. Cool huh?

Anyway, besides that lookin freakin' cool... i was wonderin' if there was any way to find out (short of asking GM/MCI/Nova for blueprints) i can see the way the skeleton on the classics and Newlooks looks like onder its outer skin.. Also, before you guys start posting massively gutted out newlooks ....i'd prefer it to be on paper? Heh... Though, if theres some classic rebuild pics where you can see the skeleton, i'd like pics like that.

Im curious, because its such a unique dezign, and i can guess what it's like and all, but its not the same as seeing it for myself.

Good luck getting blueprints from those folks, as I think they've likely pitched 'em a long time ago.

I have an original GM exterior blueprint for a New Look penned in '57-'58, but it reflects a number of styling changes that never made it into production. This was being pitched from some automotive library's collection; I scooped it up for $2-5, IIRC. Hate to think what else has gone missing over the years...

Classic's were essentially the same as New Looks underneath their skin - there was a bit of variation where the structure was above the belt line and at the front though.

I have seen photos online of New Looks being rebuilt - but if you've seen the photo's in Evan's book of the RTS' under construction, then you have a good idea of what a New Look looks like underneath its skin.

Well...somewhat. If you were looking at the underside of the bus, then yes...structurally, RTS was a whole different beast.

I meant in terms of construction - lots of shaped and pressed steel, although in the case of the New Look and Classic it was all rivetted together.

This is in contrast to most other buses, which are formed of steel tubes that are welded together.

yep, perfect example.

those vertical channels continue up to the last row of horizontal rivets under the window sashes, which are themselves steel stampings. those window surrounds have channels between each other to continue the support and add rigidity to the roof.

the skin itself is either under tension or compression depending on what it's riveted to. it's the primary horizontal load bearer.
