Muni will be installing nine charging stations at Woods Division starting next month. The first electric buses will be delivered in spring 2021. More info here: https://www.sfmta.com/blog/first-step-battery-electric-muni-buses

Spring 2021 may also be the time when Muni Metro resumes. I wonder what will happen first: Muni Metro returning or Muni testing electric buses.

From a Twitter report, it seems that the extension of the 30 to Chrissy Field in the Presidio began on 19th September. Even more interestingly, they are using the XT60 trolleybuses and using battery power on the unwired extension. Time for some photos and videos, guys

Thanks. It's good to see the battery function being used for a permanent (?) extension, rather than just for road works detours etc.

Its a Temporary Section due to the pandemic to get Essential Workers or people heading to Crissy Field an advantage to have some transportation option to that area.

No, it's a permanent extension. It has been in planning for a while, but we only got around to doing it now. It is marketed as an alternative transport option to Chrissy Field, and for essential workers to get there, as some people in the Marina would likely be opposed to having the 60 foot busses on the 30 full time.

Sorry if this has been discussed previously, but what is the destination sign convention for SFMTA buses? Is it the yellow route number and orange destination text on the front headsign with the orange side destination signs? I feel like I have seen a number of different styles, including all orange front signs and yellow side destination signs. I know there was a lot of refurbishment talk that was going on, and was curious if they intend to stick with a single sign manufacturer/convention.

Thanks!

So MUNI Previously had Twin Vision Headsigns and since they went out of business, Luminator has taken over operations ever since with the Spectrum line of Headsigns and displays. When the buses get refurbished they will have the new Luminator headsigns.

I didn't know Twin Vision went out of business. It's sad that this company went bankrupt around the time the last SF Muni XT40, New Flyer 5885, began service on 02/05/2020.

There isn't really a specific convention per se, some of the new Luminator ones (very few now) don't have the yellow text update. All of the trolleys with spectrum have it, (one runs around with green numbers), and I think 6629-6697, 8751-8780, and a majority of the 8900s have it. As for the refurbishments, yes the refurbs to my knowlege would get the spectrum signs. However, from what I hear from procurement, some of the battery electric prototypes may have a different type of sign.

I like the Luminator Spectrum destination signs because of the number font, and it's more readable than the TwinVision one. Unfortunately, that destination sign dating back to 2013 that were first used on the second batch of the rehabbed Neoplans will be gone forever when all of the Xcelsiors are refurbished and some people are going to miss it.

What happend to all the Skodas ?

All of our remaining 14TrSf were retired in early September 2019 after one had a battery explode in a yard. At that time there were something like 50 on property, of those around 35 were running in service. They all got sent to auction between October 2019 and December 2019, with the last ones being sold in January 2020. 5538 still is here, painted in the simplified landor scheme that 5400, 5401 and 5402 wore (5401 and 5402 later got repainted in the septa scheme).
