JN HSR
Anyone know what HSR is planning on buying in the coming order? Anymore artics or hybrids? I think Kevin said previously that there are 15 Artics on order that are expected to be delivered hopefully starting in December of this year. I don't recall if they will be Hybrid or not, but they're for the BLine and eventually the ALine. Hey Kevin, can you confirm the number?

HSR has ordered 18 hybrid artics that will go on the production line in December of 2008. Delivery will probably not start until January or February of 2009. Chris W
From what company? From the data at hand, one could only assume it's more DE60LFRs. Good that they're solving the bus shortage though.

Hybrid0920
Good that they're solving the bus shortage though. We actually do not have a shortage ATM. Thats why we lent out 3 Classics to BT for the summer, and parked our Nova LFS for the summer. HSR has ordered 18 hybrid artics that will go on the production line in December of 2008. Delivery will probably not start until January or February of 2009. Ooooo, alright sounds good, what I didn't know is they have already placed the order! But thanks for letting us know. P.S, will these be DE60LFR, same as what we have? It will be interesting to see them with the new LED lighting, and the DPF/ULSF that it should come with. Chris. JN HSR
What bus shortage? From what I understand Burlington Transit had a shortage of buses during the summer and that's why they borrowed a few of the HSR's Classics, but the HSR doesn't have a shortage of buses. Considering they had every Nova and Classic parked during the summer that should at least show that there are plenty of buses to go around. Speaking of BT borrowing Classics, why didn't they borrow a couple of the parked Novas instead? I'm sure they are gradually going towards 100% low floor buses and the they could have programmed the flipdot signs to display route information instead of using cards in the window. Just a thought. Edit: You beat me by seconds to answer the post and we said pretty much the same thing.

Actually, I've asked the exact same question maybe a month or two ago. The reply I was given was that BT drivers are used to Classics, and thats what they recieved. The other reason is that they are not used to driving LFS, plus they are noisy and have bad A/C.

I think drivers would have prefered bad A/C over no A/C at all, and NOVAs are not near as noisy as a blue bird.

The reply I was given was that BT drivers are used to Classics, and thats what they recieved. That makes sense, as far as being used to a certain model of bus. No need to train the drivers on a brand new coach for only a few weeks of service. I wonder if BT would buy the buses used from HSR when they are retired in the coming months. They're probably still usable and the ones that HSR have left are from 1988, years younger than BT's 1983-1985 Classics. I don't see why HSR wouldn't sell them as they'd likely get more from them, if BT was intersted, than if they sold them for scrap. Think the HSR might keep one Classic around. Perhaps refurbish it and keep it on the lot for historical and/or charter purposes?

Those Classics are probably all run into the ground by now similar to TTC buses. The D40-89s from Oakville are in much better shape than the Classics. Oh wait, BT drivers don't know how to drive a D40! LOL.

Keep in mind that both Hamilton and Burlington are two of a few sysems that will be participating in the 2009/2010 consortium. Depending on the numbers of the two systems, maybe BT wouldn't need them at all. But ya never know.
Chris W
What I meant by shortage was there seems to be a shortage of non NFI buses. I wish they would scrap all the "emotion-less" D40LFs and create more variety. A couple 30 foot NABI, Flxible or ElDorados would be nice.

Perhaps refurbish it and keep it on the lot for historical and/or charter purposes? That's the purpose of giving Classic because of the type of vehicle as drivers used to and dependable! With the funding from Provincial every year, I don't see why Burlington wants to buy off from HSR as both system continues to buy LF. Good luck telling HSR to keep one Classic as historical. It's not even in original condition. I thought HSR abuses their buses alot more than other companies. Those buses haven't got rebuild till the end of the life, which end up alot of rust. Lucky it can still run on the road. What I meant by shortage was there seems to be a shortage of non NFI buses. JN HSR
The HSR has a special lot on the property for historic buses? Not so much a spot on the lot, bus like mentioned there is a spot at the back that some older buses that are in limbo are. Not in service and not sent to scrap. Buses that one day might be preserved/restored...if they can survive the elements. It would be nice to see one or more of them restored. What I meant by shortage was there seems to be a shortage of non NFI buses. I wish they would scrap all the "emotion-less" D40LFs and create more variety. A couple 30 foot NABI, Flxible or ElDorados would be nice. Yeah there's not much point really in ordering any 30ft buses. With the size of the city there are only a handful of routes that have low ridership levels that would warrant one. And it'd only really be a matter of a route entering an area that a 40ft bus might be too big that 30ft buses might be needed.

The only routes I can think of that is low ridership enough for a 30ft bus would be the 8 or the 99, but the 8 is interlined so it does not really matter anymore and the 99 has the replica trolleys on it. Also a quick note, I finally have a copy of the route guide/map, I got it at Burlington Downtown Bus Terminal, I noticed that the HSR finally made a note of my Bus Hailing Kits, YAY! If the Lime Ridge route ever came back, that would be a perfect candidate for a 30 ft. What about the 52A? or the 16?? Just as a side note, could the 52A run all day, and possibly run it over to University Plaza?? Didnt the HSR used to run the Natural Gas Elf on that route, or was it the 6/7, before the 8 was added Edited September 4, 2008 by BusMaxx

Didnt the HSR used to run the Natural Gas Elf on that route, or was it the 6/7, before the 8 was added Yes at first the CNG Overland ELF's were run on 6/7, then they were run on the "Gore to Shore Shuttle", and then they were run on route 45 LimeRidge, until that route was discontinued. Oh 'Route 8 York' what a short and seemingly pointless route. No worries, I have plans to re-engineer and re-route that route ... you'll see. Also a quick note, I finally have a copy of the route guide/map, I got it at Burlington Downtown Bus Terminal, I noticed that the HSR finally made a note of my Bus Hailing Kits, YAY! Until seeing it on the map I had no idea such a thing existed. A genius idea indeed. I thought they were gonna save a GM artic?? There is apparently a company in the States that is interested in restoring and preserving one of the Artics. If the Lime Ridge route ever came back, that would be a perfect candidate for a 30 ft. What about the 52A? or the 16?? Like was said when 45 Limeridge was restored in 2002 for that one week the ELFs were assigned. As well the 52A also used the shorter buses. 16 Ancaster is interligned with 43 Stone Church so it wouldn't be able to use 30 footers. Now if the city gets the tax situation fixed up to bring more service into Ancaster (*ahem 44 Rymal) potentially 16 Ancaster could be simplified and shortened and the 17 Ancaster Local could be resurrected. Just as a side note, could the 52A run all day, and possibly run it over to University Plaza?? All day would be cool. Not sure what the ridership numbers are for the route. The route did terminate at University Plaza back in 1991. Adding service to University Plaza Osler Dr via downtown would be cool, though not sure if it would be implimented with 5/5E/52 passing by it already. JN HSR
What buses are on the 52A anyways? I'd be whatever is at the front of the lineup when the driver assigned to the route gets to the garage. The one time I went down to Dundas to get a shot of the 52A there was a Nova on the route. Just like today there's a Nova on the 12 Wentworth. First one I've seen.

I seen a Nova this afternoon heading down Upper James to the 12. Also seen an 08xx heading to the 18...... If there was a candidate route fr a 30ft, the 52A would be it. I said to rn it all day, and up to Universtiy Plaza, just to give more options to Dundas riders.
