Miscellaneous TTC Discussion & Questions

Recommended Posts

I'm not too concerned about Queen's Park taking over maintenance but I am very concerned about they controlling new extensions. Doug Ford can potentially ignore the TTC and Toronto as a whole and build extensions to serve 905 region without any relief to the 416 region. Also who will pay for the operation when they turn the subway into a major white elephant. Basically they can build the Sheppard and Yonge subway extensions instead of the relief line or waterfront east LRT and let TTC figure out how they'll operate it. DoFo can ignorantly claim TTC is making enough money to fund those extensions.

Right now there are concerns that he'll just stick a casino in Ontario Place without any support from Toronto Council. Maybe the monorail idea would pop up again.

Re Ontario Place - an interesting conspiracy theory was put on twitter the other day. If the CNE was punted out of Ex Place, and the Ex Loop-Springhurst Loop interconnect went ahead (the price of City assent), that leaves MLSE in a position to build on Marlies, TFC, Raptors venues to create another Maple Leaf Square type development. The trickiest part of the theory is that the Ex grounds are federal land, so they would have to go along and it’s not the kind of thing one would see Adam Vaughan sitting still for.

I thought it could be that, but they have been overwhelmingly specific to the new extension portion of Line 1 so I'm not certain on that being the reason.

Maybe glitches with the ATC system.

You should be. That magical $160m/year number that the Premier threw out there wouldn't cover half of the TTC's annual subway maintenance budget.

That said, the rest of your points are also a very serious concern as well.

Wow, I didn't know that.

That would makes a freedom of information request regarding TIFF communications and lobbying of city officials interesting!

I wonder if she is registered as a lobbyist. Nope ... no sign.

Given Doug Ford's recent performance, I would not be surprised if he simply outlaws streetcars during his term in office.

Given the gridlock that would create, it might face a constitutional challenge based on mobility rights! :)

Don't worry. Doug Ford plans to fix that by building the Scarborough Expressway and pass laws ensuring that less than fair market value will be paid on all expropriated land.

He could outlaw streetcars but he'll have to pay Bombardier for cancelling the existing TTC contract (which the province is still paying 1/3 of it) plus the damage the TTC incurred for having to shutdown Leslie Barns and replacing it with two bus garages. TTC can sue them and they'll lose. The city will loose prime land for bus garages plus having the complains of people not wanting two bus garages in their backyard. Hopefully Ford's legal adviser would have told him it's not worth it for a multi-billion lawsuit.

  1. We know Ford hates streetcars.
  2. I very much doubt Ford (or Trump) gives a crap about any legal advice.

I was reading last year's articles about Line 1 ATC and wonder if they are still on schedule to turn ATC back on between Dupont and VMC in the fall of 2018? Anyone know the exact time when this will happen if it does happen this year?

There is a closure Dec 1 & 2 from VMC to St George which could indicate full-stretch testing prior to activation... it technically still is the fall at that point. There are two more Sheppard West to Lawrence West closures (including this weekend) too.

It all depends on whether ATC between Sheppard West and Yorkdale is completed on schedule. The TTC won't turn on the already completed Dupont to Yorkdale section until that gap is filled to avoid having to constantly switch back and forth between ATC and the old system.

The one thing we have to bear in mind is that the province / King Doug could impose additional taxes on Toronto at will to pay for subways. For example: deem that the first $20m of City LTT from each month’s remittance from the province to Toronto be diverted to a Scarb subway trust fund. Or: all gas tax payments to Toronto will now go into the fund. City Councillors complain? Tighten your belts! Anyone else complains? Shut up and love my subway

If he did so, he'll bully the mayor to have it added but kept a secret as Ford is here to create efficiency and reduce taxes for the taxpayer. Anyways, just continue to laugh at the artificial tax savings with all his former oppositions being out of a job.

Why keep it a secret? He and his brother had no problem creating a subway tax for the SSE and he didn't lose any supporters over it.

That's a subjective answer. Some would say that a lot of people disapproved the tax, the other candidates for mayor at the time blasted him ruthlessly for the introduction of a new tax to support the Scarborough Subway.

All supporters of the Ford bros. I've talked to have said the same thing: they disapprove of the tax but blame the feds and province for it since they didn't give the city more money.

Hang on, are people trying to use political discussion to derail this thread? If so, let's just wait to see how our government is elected before we speculate further.

If there is a work zone in the ATC zone, will subway drivers required to turn off the ATC mode?

Back on topic.

Is there even any point to the Yorkdale express shuttle running from Yorkdale station to Dufferin and Jane Osler? It isn't that hard to go through the mall.

Question for any bus/subway operator out here:    On a one bus route, all drivers have the same offdays.  I have seen on one route this period all crews before the late relief has weekends off, yet the late relief piece has fri/sat off.  is this something new?  I have never heard of this before.

It helps people with mobility issues where walking that distance in one go is unachievable or extremely difficult. For able bodied people it's no issue but that's not the case for everyone.
