63 Ossington
I want to join the TTC summer student program next year, but I don't really know what to expect... I would've applied this year, but I'm not 16 yet... Does anyone have any experience with the program? I'm posing this here, because, well we're transit enthusiasts and a lot of guys here are students and some work with the TTC... How many students do they generally hire each year? It says here ,(at the bottom of the page) that in 2006, they hired 290 students... Apparently some of the positions are: Carhouse Helper (vehicle cleaner) Operating Garageperson Subway Janitor Surface Janitor Escalator Mechanic's Helper Warehouse Person Landscaping Station Collector There may also be some clerical positions related to Finance, Administration, Call Centre and Information Technology. Salaries range from $12.34 to $14.61 per hour Also: Eligibility To be considered for summer student employment, you must be: * a full-time student, enrolled in full-time studies at a secondary or post-secondary institution; and * returning to full-time studies in the Fall You may be asked to provide proof that you meet these requirements. That was from a page from RedFlag Deals... So if anyone can offer any insight on the work positions, or anything on the program in general, that'd be awesome! (Some other students here may also be interested...) By the way, the deadline for this year has passed... >>> Feb.
wil9402
Most, if not all of the jobs, start in May. They are mainly geared towards Post-Secondary students. It is very unlikely if I'm not wrong for a high school student to get hired since high school finishes in June and very few, if not none, of the jobs start in June or July. Well, I'm sure there is something that accommodates students in Secondary school, or else they wouldn't be recruiting Post-Secondary and Secondary students.. I was a carhouse cleaner many years ago while I was in college, and there wasn't such thing as an "easy" night. Sure there were nights where the cars weren't excessively dirty, but then there were Friday and Saturday nights! It was definately a good experience to say the least. Cityflyer
Salaries range from $12.34 to $14.61 per hour Interesting... Orion V told me at GO, they pay a flat rate for all summer student jobs no matter what/where you work. I guess for TTC, some jobs are tougher than others. At what times of the day were your shifts? Daytime, nighttime? Early morning? Also, were you stationed at a yard? Greenwood? Wilson? Davisville? What did you primarily do there? Also, are student workers unionized? (I'm not sure, as its temporary work, but full time)
rollsign29
At what times of the day were your shifts? Daytime, nighttime? Early morning? Night shift (11:00pm - 7:30am). This was all that was available. I was picked after all the hiring was done, as the individual I replaced "couldn't handle working nights" Also, were you stationed at a yard? Greenwood? Wilson? Davisville? A specific yard. I'm not releasing too much detail on that. All I know is that you usually get stationed at a specific yard if your a carhouse/garage cleaner. If you're a subway station janitor, I'm pretty sure you go on a rotation. You report at a specific station, and you go around to any number of different stations in a given night. I wasn't one of these, so that info may be tweaked by someone who actually did that. Other tasks, not a clue. What did you primarily do there? Clean vehicles. Nothing fancy about it. If you're one of the lucky ones (like I was), you get the lovely task of dealing with what drunks usually leave behind when they take the bus home and "can't keep there lunch down". After a while, you get really used to it and begin to wonder what it was they ate. It's a fun game, makes the time go by faster! Also, are student workers unionized? (I'm not sure, as its temporary work, but full time) I can't recall if I was or not.
CLRV4037
At what times of the day were your shifts? Daytime, nighttime? Early morning? Also, were you stationed at a yard? Greenwood? Wilson? Davisville? What did you primarily do there? Also, are student workers unionized? (I'm not sure, as its temporary work, but full time) A few additions and corrections to Orion 7029s info. I was also a summer student for 4 years before becoming an operator. 1. The shifts range depending on the location. If you are a carhouse helper they are usually 5 days of 8 hours of the following shifts: Days (700-1530), Afternoons (1500-2330), Sunset (2100-530), Nights (1100-730). Bus garage operators are usually 4 days of 10 hours with similar shift hours but longer, however this also depends on the location, other locations could be 5 8s. Subway janitors work 5 8s, with similar shifts as the carhouse people. Students get bumped around and must report at different stations and look after 3 or 4 stations per shift, depending on the stations. The main office for the janitors is at Lawrence Stn. Student Collectors get put on spareboard, and most other clerical or landscaping positions are usually days. 2. The positions are all described on the website. Carhouse helpers clean streetcars, which involve sweeping them out at the end of their runs on the night shift. The other shifts do a variety of things such as more detailed cleaning of the streetcars, floor washing, carhouse cleaning, etc. Some students may get shunt trained (like myself), and in addition to cleaning you shunt streetcars, go on deadheads and change offs. Shunt training of students is limited though, and some years they didn't train anyone. I was fortunate to get trained in my first year and the training carries through each summer with a short training refresher every summer for however long you are there. During the time I was a student they did not train students in the subway yards. Bus garage operators do the same thing as the full time employees: shunt, clean and service buses in the fuel line. Sometimes they will be able to do change offs. Other positions are obvious. 3. Students pay union dues, however, you need 6 months of continuous service to be full member of the union; this is the case for all employees. Most student positions last 4-5 months and therefore they don't become full union members. Students do get some representation from the shop stewards though if they have to speak to the superintendent of their work location for whatever issue. If you get into trouble, you are temporary employee so the TTC has no reason to keep you employed, and if the shop steward feels the same way you're SOL. My advice to any prospective summer student when they are hired on: Show up on time, and complete your assigned work properly, don't cut corners. Also, keep the bus fanning or streetcar foaming to a minimum, or at least out of site of the bosses! When you get hired, you will sign a sheet of terms and conditions of employment. One of the items is to keep items internal to the TTC private. It would be wise to not go posting willy nilly about all if the interesting technical things at your work location. I recall one summer student in my first year getting in trouble for that. General observations like 4100 and 4037 came in coupled today, or I brought 4135 back from Hillcrest yesterday are fine, a lot of us depend on those inside observations to keep on top of the news of the fleet! 63 Ossington
Thank you guys so much for the insight! I'm sure some of the jobs are for older youths with drivers licenses. Student collectors, do they shadow the full time 'real' employees? I can't imagine an inexperienced student managing a station by him/herself! As for the issue of Transit fanning on the job, it shouldn't be much of a problem, as I don't really let my interest show, the most I do is just subtly admire the vehicles just looking at them. I'm also not one to cut corners, as I believe that since you're already doing it, why not at least do it well? As for not releasing the 'internal items', I'll definitely keep that in mind! And to confirm this, are there jobs suitable for Secondary School students; jobs that start Mid-June to accommodate exams? Or do they give you time off for exams? Thank you everyone for their insight! I really appreciate it!

CLRV4037
^^^ Thanks you two so much for the insight! (Orion 7029 and CLRV4037)And I'm guessing some of the jobs are for older youths with drivers licenses eh? (>>> Not me) Student collectors, do they shadow the full time 'real' employees? Also, I'm sorry, I'm not one who records their sightings, unless there's a special request for me to do so... Thanks to all that offer their insight! I really appreciate it! Despite what the website says, there are very few positions that start in June. You might get lucky, but you would be grappling at straws if you were to put all your hope in getting a job at the TTC while in highschool. All students are adequately trained for their positions, they don't just plunk you in the collector booth cold turkey.

63 Ossington
*Thread bump* I have a question; If you work with the TTC as a summer student worker, do you still get an employee card enabling free travel on the TTC system? If I understand correctly, full-time employees (and pensioners?) get an employee pass granting them free TTC travel.
D. DeLarge
GO Transit has it for their summer students, I'd imagine TTC has one as well. The only drawback is you have to give it back at the end of the summer
