I guess we need armoured streetcar ramps. Cars passing open streetcar doors are always a problem on Lake Shore.

lol

thats a problem on ALL our lines.

i never figurem out why we havent had any safety blitzswith police officers handing on tickets to drivers blowing through streetcar doors

sadly, this would only happen if a high number of people are killed.

I don't think many people are killed by people stopping to let someone out or pick someone up at rush hours, but there have been ticketing blitzes for that as well.

I don't think it would be very productive to do a blitz for this. They'll just cite police resource is better used somewhere else.

What they should really do is install a police camera on the streetcar. If someone does run through open doors, the sensor will trigger a photo or even a video. Then send them a ticket. With longer streetcars, it's even easier to identify offenders when they blow through all 4 doors.

There seems to be a lot of legal issues about making camera offences stick, and people seem to love lining up to fight the tickets.

Karen Stintz once proposed mounting cameras on streetcar fronts to ticket people blocking lanes, but I bet she would have run a mile from it if she had ever been faced with implementing it especially if Denzil and the other car fanatics objected.

It's hard to make a photo stick but a video would give them a more detail look of the surrounding. So the excuse "the streetcar opens opened as I was driving through" won't work. There would be difficulties unless we can see the driver's face.

Yes they have to get out of their seat. Not only do they have to deploy the ramp, since it's a slope, they'll have to be able to push a 200 lb. person up the ramp if the wheelchair can't get up. It's part of their training or something. So all the older seniors ops might not be able to drive the new car. Aren't you glad that buses can load at the curb?

Buses are only allowed to load at certain stops only. Westbound Ionview and Eglinton is one of the stops where the operators can't deploy the ramp at that stop. We are allow to deploy the ramp on the road too. Like the one at Meadowvale and Kingstons. Before the construction, that stop doesn't have a curb.

If the bus's ramp can't deploy under its power, we the bus drivers have to yank the ramp out if possible. Trust me they are heavy. Luckily we now have a stick to assist us yanking the ramp out.

It's especially a problem on Lake Shore because:

  1. The lane to the right of the streetcar is a through lane all the way from Park Lawn to Brown's Line
  2. Speeds are faster (905ers taking a shortcut home)
  3. Drivers are more ignorant (905ers who don't otherwise encounter streetcars)

The worst place I know of on the rest of the system is eastbound at Shaw and westbound at Ossington. Drivers seem to think that it's fine to drive past the streetcar in the right turn lane because, hey, the streetcar is one lane over.

Today, 4227 became the first ALRV to run on the 510 in so many years, on the King and QQ/Spadina branches.

It was the only ALRV on the line today. There should have been two as only 13 cars were on the 510. There should have been 14. A number of Flexities short turned at King while all were scheduled for QQ. TTC fails again.

Today is also the first day ever that had all 13 new streetcars (4400, 4403 - 4414) in service concurrently during daytime: 4407 on 509, the rest on 510.

Considering there are 16 runs designated for Flexities this board period, with only 13 cars available so far, I'm willing to bet we will see CLRV's on 510 running on Flexity headways, probably starting tomorrow.

That schedule is complete fiction anyway. As long as ops finish on time, it's all good.

The plan is to use ALRVs on 510 runs that can not be filled by a Flexity. There will be spare ALRVs available as the "501L/507" between Humber and Long Branch and all 504 runs will use CLRVs that were made available from making 510 accessible, resulting in ALRVs being made available from those routes.

There was already one yesterday. 4034 was on 510.

Do you want TTC to pay its operators overtime everyday?

Of course not. I just find it amusing that it sometimes takes years for TTC planning to update hopelessly outdated schedules, all the while blaming "traffic congestion" for erratic service, while the real problem lies with the schedules themselves.

Thanks. I expected that.

They should be - they are more powerful than either a C or ALRV.

Does anyone know if there are any good books on the CLRV and ALRV fleet? I have the two PCC books from Fred Schneider and Stephen Carlson and they're an excellent look into the PCC, it'd be pretty neat if there was something like that on these as well.

The new cars can push/tow another new car out of any tunnel and hills. The ALRVs weight less than the new cars.

The problem with ALRVs is that they derail if pushed around Union loop. So probably won't be seeing ALRVs beyond Queens Quay loop.

Update for today - as of 2pm Nextbus shows 4 M1's and 2 L3's (4202 & 4242) on the 510.

Nextbus is missing about half the 510 runs currently (since Sunday) - and also the 509 shuttles, most of the 503 runs, some 505 runs, etc. - basically anything changed from the last board. TTC is saying that hopefully will be resolved Tuesday.

Yeah, I read that from Steve Munro's blog. The problem is the Union loop doesn't have a track to loop back around. Spadina station loop does which allows a new car to proceed into the loop and back up onto the loop around track to get in front of the broken down ALRV in the case that they can't push it. The ALRVs are placed on the 510B/C branch only.

I don't think they can fit two ALRVs on the same platform in Spadina station. Maybe they can unload with the rear hanging outside the platform area. With the constant bunching, riders can be waiting 2-3 minutes for the front car to unload, load and depart.

I wonder how long will take take to reprogram the signs. The 510 to King sign still says short turn.

Instead of going from runs 1-14, they have runs 1-8 and some in the 20's range. None in the 50's range. This made it worst. TTC keeps blaming Nextbus. Maybe it's time TTC needs to threaten nextbus as this problem shouldn't happen twice in 8 weeks. This wasn't a problem last year either.

Something has changed. Though it's not clear where the problem is. All we know is Nextbus hasn't sucked in the new TTC data. Is it because they can't be bothered, or because there's an integrity problem in the TTC data, that creates an error when they try and suck it in?

It's no secret that TTC replaced the public-facing opendata for the November board after they first released it. So we know that TTC somehow messed up that dataset.

The public-facing data for the January board is currently dated December 20th. Let's see if that changes ... :)
