GTAmissions1
The free transit proposal for December was passed by a margin of 17 to 6. If trains are still not operating on December 1st, the free month will NOT happen and instead be postponed to a future month. Costs for the free month coming out of Rideau Transit Maintenance monthly payments for providing train service. https://ottawa.citynews.ca/local-news/gimmick-or-not-ottawa-public-transit-users-can-expect-to-ride-for-free-in-december-4510598?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot&fbclid=IwAR1mzOtAwV08SXgQhU7ovMghCzigeBGw_ihjI0V24SVISyLlyn45F5wIfsE To be honest, I think they could also consider not increasing fares until the service is stable enough to operate. Of course the challenge is how to cover the increasing costs such as fuel and wages. Trying to achieve a balance between operations and revenue to support. I don't blame passengers who are frustrated having to rely on R1 shuttle buses for almost a month now and hoping that things stabilize.

Michel
The buses Councillor McKenney is proposing to purchase in this story are listed here: https://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/metrostlouis,mo/auction/view?auc=2905276 CTV news incorrectly said they were nearly two decades old (Well I suppose if you count the two Gillig buses then they are) CityNews also incorrectly said they were former OC Transpo buses. At least the photos on the auction don’t look like the 2001 models we used to have.

The buses in the auction actually were ex-OC Transpo buses, so they're definitely correct.... the only difference is that they got upgraded to Cummins ISL9 engines instead of keeping the S50 engins they used to have. They're actually 2004s too, so the claim of being nearly two decades old isn't actually too far off. I also looked up one of the VINs in the auction and it led me to this page..... https://www.cptdb.ca/wiki/index.php/St._Louis_Metro_2201-2215 It also says that most of them were put up on the same website. Also, there’s a worldwide shortage of electronic automotive parts, especially Cummins sensors, so that will slow that process down even further. McKenney also did mention that would come in handy in future prolonged shutdowns which I think we all agree at this point is inevitable. The one thing I don't understand is if the chair of the Transit Commission, Alan, acknowledged that we need more buses in our system, why hasn't Transpo further speed up the training/deployment of electric buses we already have and just get them on the road already? Either way, I'm hoping we procure them. Need more buses in general.

If we are looking at STM / STLaval experience with XE40 buses, it is a far world that just prepare the bus and give it to an operator LOTS of testing and engineering needs to be done before a customer board an electric bus

dudebrains
STO has posted the agenda for tomorrow's council meeting. http://www.sto.ca/fileadmin/user_upload/communications/PDF/Ordre_du_jour/2021_10_28_CA_0_OJ.PDF Per agenda items 3.1 and 3.2, it seems the contracts for hybrid bus acquisitions are being cancelled (which is wierd, especially for the 18m [60ft] buses, as the STO currently doesn't seem to have enough). Another interesting item is 6.1. It seems that the finance department will be authorizing spending for the acquisition of 2 40ft electrics!!

We desperately need more artics, especially considering that the 12s and 13s (plus 1201 & 1202, which are actually 2011s) are reaching their half life and will probably need refurbishment. That's pretty much the only possibility. Starting in 2025, the province will only subsidize the purchase of electrics. Makes me wonder if the 21s could be the last order of fossil fuel buses for the STO (although I can't fathom them not ordering more buses before then, the 04s are getting tired...) Here's another piece of the puzzle... François Legault announced at COP26 that the Quebec government will be investing $2.4 billion for a mass procurement of 2,148 electric buses by 2030 for the province.
GTAmissions1
This is new that transfers will be extended another 60 minutes when R1 replacement service is operating. The 60 minute figure to account for the one-way trip if someone were to take the entire rail one from one end to the other. Along with transferring to a local route to reach their end destination. Currently transfers are only valid for 90 minutes during daytime and 105 minutes during early mornings, after 6 PM and all-day Sunday. Between 10:30 PM until 2:45 AM the next day, transfer expires at 4:30 AM the next morning. There are plans to make the current transfer two hours which is 120 minutes which has been deferred until the 2023 budget. Right now, it is being reviewed by the Transit Fare Working Group and staff on the implications and costs of extending transfers during the daytime. I'd argue OC Transpo is due for an extension of its transfer window regardless of investment or not. Extra investment towards local service is great, but the city's also grown so that 90 minutes is insufficient for end-to-end travel within the full-time route network. There are other things OC can do, but I'll save that for another time.
