Mississauga recently changed their bus life cycle standards starting with the 03s. 40 foots will be retained for 15 years and 30 and 60 foot buses will remain the same at 12 years. They decided this based on the average annual maintenance cost versus the annualized replacement cost for a bus. So for example, if a new bus costs 400 thousand dollars, then at 8 years its annualized replacement cost would be 50 thousand dollars, at 10 years it would be 40 thousand dollars and so on.

So once the annual cost of maintaining a bus exceeds that of its annualized replacement cost, it's time to retire the bus. They figured out that this occurs around 15 years for 40 foots and at 12 years for 30 and 60 foot buses.

No new bus orders are scheduled until 2016.

That's good information. I know its a bit early, but any idea of what they are planning to get in 2016?

3 years is a pretty large gap between bus deliveries...im hedging my bets that they'll budge on that and we'll see one small purchase between that time. For example I dont think the 14 MiExpress buses and the new artics will be enough if they plan on implementing both the 104 and the 105

It's all cutback as the City it running out of development money and the expansion for drivers and service.

They're probably for the continued rollout of the busway, so 107, 109, 110 and possibly 108 if demand dictates. The full busway is supposed to be completed in 2016. Depending on when it open, say in the Fall, there'd be a bit of a window to get some extra/new buses to use for whatever additional service they have planned for the busway. Of course if the whole thing's delayed as with the first section, then there'd be some breathing room. Perhaps the City could get some additional funding from Metrolinx or the Province (yes I know they are essentially the same thing, but they do have separate budgets).

Wrong train of thought

Mississauga News

ByJonathan Kerr/Mississauga

Dear Editor:

Mississauga is in the process of implementing a Light Rail Transit system (LRT) that’s estimated to cost about $1.3 billion. The implementation of an LRT will not address congestion but it will create problems economically and socially.

Transit can be improved at a much lower cost. Rather than spending billions of dollars on an LRT, money should be spent to improve MiWay and GO Transit.

How much will the LRT cost? (Recent estimates put the cost) at just under $1.4 billion. But these projects can run over in costs by as much as 40 per cent.

An LRT in Mississauga is an unwise solution when it comes to managing urban growth and traffic congestion.

Given 2014 is an election year, don't expect much increase in funding or expansion for 2014/15.

Don't expect to see route 100 until 2016 with 104 and 105 up in the air for 2015.

IF MT gets an 3% increase, we will see some service improvement in 2014 as well more service for the Transitway. Have to see how they plan on handling 2015 budget with 2014 being an election year. Do need more expansion buses.

MT Drivers will see FIRE No Enter sign flashing for the Dixie Station if there is a fire there.

1360 spotted on the 1 W today at Cedarglen Gate around 07.45

Couldn't tell with the distance, it did look like the 1360 headed northbound on Creditview at Britannia. As it was continuing through the intersection it was probably Not In Service at 3:50 probably heading to Meadowvale TC unless they were planning on putting it on the 108 being an artic.

That's the 4PM 108 from Argentia which runs with an artic.

MT 2014 budget calls for 3% increase of service and only 6 expansion buses with no replacement ones.

Nice to see rear widows.

Since TTC will have a new supplier for buses, maybe the the buses will have windows if TTC wants them.

The details for the extended New Year's Eve service are out but it looks like no additional routes have been added. Essentially the Sunday/Holiday service from the 90's:

1 DUNDAS, 3 BLOOR, 9 MEADOWVALE, 11 WESTWOOD, 13 GLEN ERIN, 19 HURONTARIO, 23 LAKESHORE, 26 BURNHAMTHORPE and 34 CREDIT VALLEY.

Adding either the 10 BRISTOL or 61 MAVIS would bring service to a large chunk of central Mississauga. Hell, even the 38A CREDITVIEW or 66 McLAUGHLIN would be nice. Outside of the northwest, Hurontario corridor and Malton there's no service north of Eglinton. Brampton has grown it's New Year's Eve service (here's last year's service since this year's hasn't been announced yet), and you can at least get to the extreme west end of the historic Meadowvale community/Levi Creek (Derry & Financial) with Brampton via Shopper's World/Brampton Gateway Terminal.

That's pathetic for Miway. No plan to handle the crowds out of Celebration Square? I believe concert and festivities are planned but have not seen the promotion. Celebration Square does change the needs.

Who is going to use this New Service when it is toally usely in the first place? Forcing people who don't have access to a car to spend the night at home. Love to see how a car driver accept this kind of schedule to use the road as they will be out in force to stop if it happens.

MT is still in the dark ages when it comes to special events and forces people to use cars to get to/from them in the first place.

With funding going for more service for the 100's these days, local service get the short stick.

Have they ever had worse than hourly frequency for service during the day? It's surprising that enough people use the 80-odd minute New Year's service that they're still running it after 3-4 years of those frequencies.

They did manage to pull off one decent event at Celebration Square for the provision of transit afterward. This past Canada Day to help people get home after the firework display was put on service was extended to about 11:15pm to coincide with the end of the firework show on the 9 MEADOWVALE, 10 BRISTOL and 61 MAVIS whose service usually wraps up by 8:00 or 9:00 on a holiday. The timing was a bit tight, but for holiday service to be extended was great! People could get down to Celebration Square and then be assured of a ride back out. The schedule was tight as it took a little longer to disperse all the crowds and then get them back up to the Terminal. I don't know if the show started late or ran long, but there were a lot of people who missed their last trip for whatever reason.

They should have played it by ear if things were looking like that, but at least reasonable service was offered. At that hour, I doubt that people were needing to make transfers to routes that did not serve City Centre. If so, the ones still running would still have been around. Delaying the final trips by a few minutes would probably have made passengers' return trip more convenient! Of course, it being a holiday I could see them try to manage labour costs, but I am appreciative of the effort they made. Now why can't we see more of that?!

The 80-minute frequency on Bloor seems to be just an additional trip, since Bloor's last bus at Islington is at around 2:20 AM, but the route's 40-minute regular weekday evening service is horrible in itself. Might as well add just one bus.
