General inquiry, did they replace all the traffic lights on Rathburn road east where the 20 runs? I heard it looks different now

The new ones at Rathburn/Hickory and the existing intersection at Rathburn/Shipp are now the Hamilton style signals, if that’s what you’re referring to. Same goes for Central Parkway/Wolfdale and Dundas/Mississauga Rd

Which was the Mississauga standard in the late 1960s through mid 1970s. There are a few of the older black casing/yellow backplate signals scattered around in Port Credit and in the Mississauga Woodlands area. Interesting that they've made a return, though Sudbury, Waterloo Region, and Sault Ste. Marie have all gone to that standard in the last decade or so.

So all the other signals remain the same?

The signals at Glen Erin/Battleford, Glen erin at the park, Dundas/Mississauga Road all have the black signal housing and reflective backplate. Also they changed the signals up on Mavis near Derry with same all yellow style, and at Mavis & Derry they now use the big 12x12x12x12 Fortran signals common in Toronto. Just curious if Mississauga is changing back to the black housing style signals.

I believe they are, although the Regional Roads retain the same design. Since the signal specs are the same throughout the Region of Peel, maybe it’s a little change because of the whole Peel Region separating fiasco? ?

They’ve also put Fortran 12-12-12-12s along Centre View

Glen Erin/Aquataine has the reflective backboards but retain their yellow housing, and there are some reflective backboards along Dixie between Bloor-Rathburn.

Also, here’s a picture of the contractor (Guild Electric) installing the new lights at Dundas/Mississauga Rd (in case you were interested)

Update as of today February 20, Google Street View has updated their snapshots of the Rathburn road area as well as the entire Mississauga East and west. However, they only show up to July 2019 and not the new changes to Rathburn/Shipp. Still waiting on more areas to update, shouldn't take very long since most of Mississauga is now updated.

There was recently a update to the MiWay Five page on the website including a new proposed map and timeline for 2020 changes.

2020 Timeline - Proposed Map (February 2020)

Some things to note:

  • The proposal to terminate route 20 at Mill Road has been dropped and the route will continue to connect to Islington (and later Kipling) Station.
  • Originally scheduled to be cancelled in October, route 90 will remain in service. Originally, the plan called for the Copenhagen section of route 90 to be abandoned and the new route 50 cover service on the Terregar portion.
  • Route 50 will still be introduced to replace route 9 on Churchill Meadows Blvd and route 39 on Lisgar. However, it won't serve Terregar and Rosehurst like originally proposed and instead use Derry. Unfortunately, this means the 50 and 90 will just duplicate each other on Derry west of Winston Churchill and the 90 being retained is probably at the expense of a more frequent 50.
  • Route 8 will remain on it's current route serving Mineola, Cawthra, and Mississauga Valley. The proposal to have the 8 serve Lakeshore to Cawthra and then up Cawthra to the transitway station has been dropped. The trade off is that there is still no service on Cawthra north of Bloor, and Cawthra Station will still not have connecting bus service. Also, the map shows the 8 and 14 (see below) duplicating each other on Mineola and Atwater, a very low ridership part of the system.
  • Route 14 is still shown as extending east of Port Credit, along Mineola and Atwater, up Ogden (replacing route 5 service) and then using South Service, Dixie, and Queensway to Sherway. However, no date is listed for implementation.
  • Route 5 is still shown as using Dixie between Lakeshore and Dixie Mall, rather than Ogden, however no date is listed for implementation.
  • Route 51 is still shown as extending to Dixie GO, however no date is listed for implementation.
  • Both branches of the route 1 are shown deviating to UTM and South Common before one of the two continues on to Ridgeway. No date is listed for implementation and hopefully it never happens.

When the MiWay Five plan first launched 5 years ago, one of the key selling points is that it would reduce duplication and allow for more frequent service across the board by simplifying routes. The MiWay network was referred to as looking like "a plate of sphagetti" and unfortunately that's still true today because they've turned back on so many of the original proposals that the system map doesn't look all that different than what it did in 2016.

The city has already started marketing "MiWay Five 2.0" the next 5 year plan from 2021-2025. Hopefully it brings about better change than the first plan has but I'm not optimistic. At least they appear to be going through with the long overdue changes to the Eglinton corridor come April 27...

They don't want 35 overlapping with 7/34 and 109 along Eglinton and 427, but they are okay with 8 and 14 overlapping along Atwater? Bizarre.

8 needs direct connection to the major east-west routes: 26 and 76 at Cawthra/Burnhamthorpe, 20 at Cawthra/Rathburn, 107/109 at Cawthra Station, and 23 at Cawthra/Lakeshore. To still not provide these connections in favour of overlapping the route with 14 and 53 along minor streets like Atwater and Mississauga Valleys Blvd is just unacceptable. If they want the route to serve Square One, they can route along Meadows Blvd, but no matter what it must connect with 20, 26/76, 107 and 109 along Cawthra Road.

Other missing connections: 26 with 45, and 28/66 with 1/101 and 35. I would also like to see 87 eliminated and so that 43 can be made into a two-way route to allow 38 to be taken off Argentia and serve Financial Dr or Meadowvale Blvd instead and connect more directly with 42/104 and 57.

8 going to the Transitway is a waste of resources consider the station was down graded from day one as ridership was going to be next to none. The most cars I have every seen at Cawthra Station is 15 and took a few years to do that. To do what you want, 8 needs to go to Derry Rd by 410 to Courtneypark and then one of the roads on either side of 410.  I said in 2004 EA Report that ridership at Cawthra and a few other stations will never meet the numbers call for considering the Transitway is a GO Thing in the first place.

7/34 will be replace by 35. There was talk that 35 wouldn't go to Kipling once the new terminal open to free up bay space. Only 10 bay for Mississauga.

What you want is not what riders want who are more important than you. You need to spend time riding these routes at all hours of the day and each day they operate to understand what takes place on these routes as well where riders are coming from.

To put a real transit system in Mississauga, you need to rip up 60% of it to build a grid system with more density on them compare to the current areas. Need more crossing over the Credit River, but going to piss off the owners of Millions Dollars Homes that these new grid roads will run by. The Mayor lives in one of those home and why the Queensway will not be extended west to 403.

Taking 14 to Sherway is another waste of resources considering 4 goes there today with very few riders. One of the 2 routes needs to stop at Dixie.

Cawthra Station is nothing special. The point is for 8 to connect with 107/109. Again it is about having a grid system. For a north-south route to be successful it must connect with the biggest east-west routes.

20/26/76 should not be taken off Burnhamthorpe to serve Kipling. They should continue to serve Burnhamthorpe connect to Islington Station and Islington Village. Plenty of space for 35 at Kipling without 20/26/76. Dumping riders of an east-west route to continue on east-west direction is just stupid. Grid system means one east-west route and one north-south route, so two routes max. That was the problem with taking route 20 to Etobicoke Creek Station as well. Forcing riders of 20 or 35 to transfer onto 109 to get to Kipling or Islington makes no sense.

Extending 14 to Dixie Mall to connect with route 5/105 is not a bad idea. As you said, Mississauga needs a grid system. East-route like 14 needs to connect with the 2nd busest north-south corridor, Dixie Road. Having continuous east-west route along Truscott/Indian/Mineola/Atwater through Lorne Park/Port Credit/Lakeview in close proximity to the QEW also reduces the need to build that Queensway bridge across the Credit River. This 14 from Clarkson to Sherway would help fill the major gap in east-west service south of Dundas and north of Lakeshore. And a complete east-west route means connecting to the TTC as well.

If it is not worth for transit to serve Sherway Gardens, the biggest destination along The Queensway, then it can't be worth to build a Queensway bridge across the Credit River for transit either. If you really want to serve that area, I think extending 44 south of UTM and Dundas to Port Credit should be enough. That would fill another gap in the grid, the gap between Hurontario and Southdown.

Here is a fantasy map for MiWay, more streamlined yet more comprehensive at the same time:

With all the coronavirus stuff happening, especially with the GO Bus incident, disinfecting the buses, TTC doing the same, just curious to know if MiWay has done the same as well as other GTA transit agencies, adding to that Mississauga having its first coronavirus case.

News that someone with the Coronavirus has travelled on MiWay on route 108 N meadowvale business express. He rode the whole route, anyone know what bus # he was on out of curiosity? They’ve said on their twitter that they will disinfect all MiWay buses too

Route 108 buses affected buy passenger with COVID-19 were 1794 on Mar 2, 0822 on Mar 3 and 0811 on Mar 4.  Buses were not sterilized until starting Mar 8.  It will take until Mar 15 to complete the entire fleet.

The Union has asked for 14 day self isolation for the affected workers (operators and maintenance) with full pay until their status in known if they were affected and Miway has said no.  There is the further potential for virus spreading undetected. https://www.mississauga.com/news-story/9892615-mississauga-transit-workers-exposed-to-covid-19-untested-and-back-at-work-union-president/?fbclid=iwar22mm7cmdbu5uuhrjgx84c6ygfpemid3e_hbc4ywwuqxewav3zkjkrt4ow

Is miWay and Brampton doing the same thing as TTC for buses servicing the Airport by having it clean on its return trip??? Then, it becomes more of a problem than TTC riders, since riders get on/off along the route either transferring to another route or not before it gets to the end of the run. TTC riders transfer to another route at Kipling.

Is miWay going to allow rear door only access and if so, lots of free rides since no cash/ticket fares are being collected or getting a transfer.

Yes.  It's in the works. So is closing off the seat behind driver in Novas and drivers can wear gloves and masks if they wish.  Reduced service coming too.
