Is this a spare unit? I've never seen it before. I'm not really into fire apparatus, but I do look from time to time.

Turns out it is a spare Ladder based out of station 5 and 22 on 1227 Stone Church road east. Its a 2001 American LaFrance Eagle 134/ Almonte/ LTI (1500/300/25F/55' Rearmount)

I could've swore I saw an ambulance that had a different box on it. Maybe just slightly refreshed design? Number 2017. Maybe I'm going crazy I don't know.

Have we received any with the new ford transit front end? Or is ford still making the old style front end?

You weren't seeing things. Hamilton Paramedic Service has purchased 1 Crestline ambulance and are using it to evaluate going with either Crestline or Demers for the future ambulance deliveries.

In 2017 HFD will purchase: 1 (one) Aerial Ladder to replace 1(one) 20 year old Aerial Ladder, 1(one) Engine (Pumper) to replace 1 (one) 20 year old Pumper and 3 (three) pumper/tankers to replace three (3) 20 year (+) old tankers.

In 2017 EMS will purchase: Six (6) vehicles that are scheduled for replacement in 2017: three ambulances, numbers 2194, 2195 and 2215; and three ERV, numbers 2348, 2351 and 2375.

1 (one) new heavy rescue has been delivered to the HFD. It is reported that it will go to Rescue 1. R1 will go to Rescue 25 (300628) - 1996 KME Renegade MFD (SN#GSO 2551) and that one may replace Rescue 60 (300606) - 1990 Spartan Gladiator MFD / Saulsbury assigned to training. Hamilton is notorious for changing their plans.

Any idea what type of rescue it is? I'm assuming KME, but is it similar to the current walk around style or is it walk in, bigger/smaller, etc?

Anyone know how they like the Heavy Rescues compared to the old squads and what their future plan is?

HFD has taken delivery of 1 103' Aerial Ladder and 2 Pumpers (Engines) from KME and 2 KME Pumper/Tankers are currently in production.

Anyone know what units these are to replace?

I have heard that there were 3 Engines delivered but that may have been misinformation,  I would have to say looking at the roster for ages of in service pumper/engines, it would be pumpers 6, 12 and or 23 but that's just a guess. I have heard unofficially that the new Ladder will be going to 1 with the current ladder 1 going to 20 and the current ladder 20 relocated somewhere else.

This was off of C-Max Fire's (their distributer) Facebook. Only mentioned the two. I would also assume 6 and 12 but wasn't sure. Could see Ladder 20 going to 15 or 24 and either of those units replacing Tower 19.

I was just talking to a friend from Hamilton Fire and he mentioned that the new Ladder will be ladder 1 with the existing  ladder 1 replacing  ladder 4. Existing ladder 4 replacing ladder 20. The new Engines will apparently be going to 23, 12 and 8. I have only seen 2 new engines at mechanical but people are still referring to 3 engines

Another engine arrived a few days ago. I saw it un-decalled heading west on cannon at James.

Odd how after the 3 new Engines go in service the busiest truck in the city will be the oldest (P6). Looks like it is getting replaced next year anyways:

  • Tenders were called for a 100' rear-mount quint, an urban pumper, rural pumper and rural pumper/tanker in December 2017 (#C5-13-17).

Any insight to where the new Aerial is going? Once the new L1 goes in service, the oldest Ladders will only be 8 years old. Ladder 4 (ex L1) and Ladder 20 (ex L4). New full time Ladder? Or replacing one of those Ladders so the volunteer stations have more modern Aerials?

From the 2018 budget book:

Quote

In 2018 HFD will purchase: 1 (one) Aerial Ladder to replace 1(one) 20 year old Aerial Ladder, 4 (four) Engines (Pumpers) to replace 4 (four) 20 year old Engines (Pumpers), and 1 (one) support vehicle to replace 1 (one) 10 year old (+) support vehicle. Note, that in order to initiate the tendering process for the large fire apparatus, an approved budget is required. Furthermore, once the tender has been awarded, the anticipated delivery time for the apparatus is between 10-12 months. Hence, there will always be a 1 (one) year lag time between the time the budget (2018) has been approved and the apparatus is received.

It looks like HFD has reorganized their special operations units slightly.

Engines 3, 12, 17, 23 and Rescue 12 are high angle, confined space, collapse, etc. trained with E23 transporting Support 23, the confined space unit.

Station 25 also has rope rescue/high angle capabilities.

Rescue 4 and Ladder 4 are still the main Hazmat units, with Ladder 4 cross-staffing Haz 2 and Support 4. Engine 8 and 11 are now Hazmat trained as well.

In addition, Engines 8 and 11 are still the Water Rescue units.

Sometime they will run out of spare ladder trucks and they will replace a ladder truck that is going in for maintenance or a break down with a pump. So it now L10 becomes P10.

No they would not put an extra vehicle into a station. An extra pump/engine or ladder would add about $3.5 million to the budget. That would be a long process through council and require hiring of 22 more people. Station 10 at one time had a pump and a truck until the late 90's.

Here is a list of stations (Old HFD) that had more vehicles in it in the past: (Today)

St 1 - Pump 1, Pump 2, Truck 101, Rescue 1, Car 203, Foam 1 (E1, L1, R1, PC1)

(St 2 - E2, DC3, C73)

St 3 - Pump 3, Pump 19 (23:00 to 07:00 hrs daily) (E3)

St 4/12 - Pump 4, Car 204, Tanker 4 (R4, L4) (Hazmat 2 and Hazmat 4 are not staffed)

(St 5 - E5)

St 6 - Car 206, Pump 6, Snorkel 106 (E6)

St 7 - Pump 7, Truck 7 (E7)

St 8 - Pump 8. Car 208, Tanker 8 (E8, DC2)

St 9 - Car 209, Pump 9, Tanker 9, Rescue 9, Truck 109 (E9, L9)

St 10 - Pump 10, Truck 10 (L10)

St 11- Car 211, Pump 11, Truck 111 (E11)

St 12 - Car 212, Truck 112, Tanker 12, Rescue 12, EU12 (Station 12 closed in the mid 90's and was merged with St 4 in it's new location. Present 12 was assigned to former Stoney Creek Station 1 on amalgamation)

Awesome post Hamilton. Super interesting to see stations with Tankers (ex 4) that are now in solidly urban areas due to the quick development.

What was the staffing like on the different units those days? Also were the cars chiefs or something else?
