BC Ferries

I am looking at reservations page on BC Ferries for the Summer schedule on Southern Gulf Island to Tsawwassen it seems like Queen of Nanaimo will be the main boat on the route with her home port being Long Harbour and Salish Eagle will fill the Bowen Queen job on route 9A.

Thought I'd share a few shots from a dreary, rainy trip to Bowen Island on the Queen of Capilano ... but that ended with a decent sunset.

Photo captured on May 7, 2007.   Which one is this?

I would believe that this is the Queen of Alberni; the extra holes in her vehicle decks and the short upper deck would indicate it's her. For additional confirmation, the Queen of Alberni was the C cl

M/V Salish Orca is delayed again until mid-May.

http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/canada/british-columbia/salish-orca-delays-1.4096122

If Salish Orca does not enter service before June except BC Ferries to try to gain Transport Canada approve to extended the operating certificate for the Queen of Burnaby to keep operating, if that fails. If the Queen of Burnaby get pulled from service on June 1st except major vessel change which could look like this:

1. Island Sky taking over the Powell River to Comox route until the Salish Orca enter service.

2. Bowen Queen and Quinitsa moves to the Earls Cove to Saltery Bay route.

If the Salish Eagle does not enter service by Summer schedule.

1. Only the Queen of Nanaimo on route 9 and no route 9a.

2. Only single boat service on Southern Gulf Islands to Tsawwassen.

3. Enhanced / modified schedule on route 5.

They are pretty nice looking imo, if a similar look to the new Salish-class... which I guess was probably on purpose.

Spirit Class once converted to LNG will resume servicing route 1 year round:

Quote

This Project to perform MLUs on the Spirit of Vancouver Island and Spirit of British Columbia presents an opportunity to reduce the operating costs of the S Class vessels to below that of the Coastal Class vessels, primarily through the adoption of LNG as fuel. This will allow the S Class vessels to resume their traditional role as the primary year-round vessels on Route 1. By extension, more flexible and cost-effective S Class vessels allow greater availability of the Coastal Class vessels for service augmentation and continuity elsewhere.

Finally, Coastal Renaissance could service route 2 year round.

It was reported Queen of Nanaimo will be repaired but will Not return to the Gulf Islands route...she will only be a relief vessel for the summer season, if it were not for having the Burnaby stil to use for parts she would probably be done now!

I wonder if the reservation system could be improved given the complaints...

  • reservations being willfully ignored and not cancelled by the sailing time despite the fees
    • increased non-refundable reservation fees, but a portion can be re-claimed for the ferry ride if you show up?
    • option for refundable reservations but at a higher premium, much like airlines
    • reserved passengers that show up early get priority if space available for an earlier sailing?
  • bar-coding of each vehicle, including length, type, and passenger count?
    • much like a parking ticket on the dash, can be scanned by terminal personnel to dynamically allocate ferry loads
    • issued when arriving at the terminal
