Enviro 500
I had a chance to take a quick look at today's Canada Line open house hosted at Lansdowne Station, RIGHT at 8pm as they already began wrapping up the event and packing their things away, I rushed in and snapped a few pictures to share with all! http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/c1679729.html It's definitely alot more roomy and spacious on the new Rotem-Hyundai trains, although with today's standard there always seem to be less seats and more standing space just so everyone can fit into the two-cars train. The overall design of the station is not bad at all, it does serve the purpose of providing a warm and welcoming feeling as one walks into the station, possibly because of the lighting combined with the roof furnished with wood. Of course, things always seem perfect and flawless when they are brand new, and the excitement will be gone as soon as the system opens and we start seeing pop cans and plastic bags lying all over the place on the ground! Enjoy the photos, comments welcome! =) Dave

Enviro 500
I'd like to share a handful of photos taken from yesterday, as I drove by Lansdowne Station and Brighouse Station, and noticed a *convoy* of Canada Line trains parked in and out of the station along the skybridge, forming a pretty neat scenery which I have never seen, or at least paid close attention in the past. In order to get photos of the trains lined up outside Brighouse Station, I went up to the fifth floor of a parking building nearby Richmond Centre and managed to shoot from above, along with a few close-up shots of individual trains as well. I'll save my words and let the pictures talk for themselves: Convoys of trains at Lansdowne: http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663204.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663205.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663206.html Brighouse: http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663207.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663208.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663209.html Westminster Highway / 3 Road: http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663211.html Individual trains: http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663214.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663213.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663210.html http://www.trans-vancouver.fotopic.net/p57663212.html Enjoy! LRT
Very cool system indeed! I was in town for a few days and saw a test train near YVR, I also drove by Vancouver City Centre Station. I might try to attend the grand opening in September! Will the other lines be connected to the new one?

I was in town for a few days and saw a test train near YVR, I also drove by Vancouver City Centre Station.I might try to attend the grand opening in September! Will the other lines be connected to the new one? In what way?? Where Trains can switch from the older lines to the Canada Line? If that's what you mean, then no, not from what I heard. I don't believe these new Canada Line cars can even operate on the old lines due to size IIRC. I am sure someone can fill us in better on that though. mersar
Correct. Canada Line is a completely different technology, and sizewise the Canada line cars wouldn't fit into any of the stations
SidneyTransitfan
If that is so, where do they intend to have the entrance/exit to the platforms for Canada line services at Waterfront Station? IMO, they should have put the Canada line platforms next to the Expo/Millenium Line platforms to improve accessibility and convenience to/from connecting services. Or, put dual-guage & dual electrification tracks in the existing platforms at Waterfront, which would allow Canada line trains to use the same platforms that already exist for Expo and Millenium Line trains. In London in the UK, certain stations on the North London Line have 750v third-rail electrification for BREL Class 313 & Bombardier Class 378 passenger services to/from Richmond and Stratford, with 25kv overhead electrification for BREL Class 321s from Watford Junction and Euston and Electric freight traffic. A similar idea should have been thought of for the Canada line.

They plan on having them less then a block from the waterfront station but the entrance for the station is inside the waterfront station... if i have some spare time this weekend I'll post up a copy of the floor plan for the station. EDIT: After a quick search here are the station plans for waterfront. And some street views... Edited April 25, 2009 by translink
neopasturquoise
Also, there is a connection (sort of) between Granville Station and Vancouver City Centre Station. They both have an entrance inside the Pacific Centre, so they are "under the same roof". When the mall closes, you will have to go to the other station by walking across the street. LRT
Cool, I had no idea that the other lines used different technology/trains. Calgary Transit is planing to use low floor trains when ever they decide to build the 3rd line

Yep, but its a bit of a downfall with the platform length, c'mon 40 meters and 20,000 people an hour... what the heck were they smoking when they came up with those numbers... Case in point: the milennium line to expo line They sure don't like making transfers easy here.

Granted I haven't seen diagrams/engineering diagrams/performance envelopes for the new equipment to compare it to the old, but I suspect that it's not physically possible. The ART design has two "third" rails quite close to the running rails, whereas the Canada Line has one third rail that seems to be several more inches away from the running rails. Because the third rail shoes are not in the same location or even the same design, you couldn't possibly have them running on the same track. And, of course, there is the 18" difference in width at the platform.... Dan
