Prince Edward Island Ferry

Recommended Posts

Here’s a picture of Northumberland Ferries “Confederation” that operates between Caribou, Nova Scotia and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island.

The other ferry on this route is the “Holiday Island”. It is a former Canadian National Railways ferry built in 1971 for the route between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. It was obtained by Northumberland Ferries in 1997 when the ferry operation between NB & PEI was replaced by a 13km (8 mile) bridge.

And remember: the one hour & twenty minute ferry ride from NS to PEI is free. You only pay when leaving PEI and the choice is yours: $68. on the ferry or $41.50 on the bridge.

What is the traffic like on the ferry?

From the NFL Web Site:

Approximate Annual Traffic (variable):

475,000 passengers

160,000 passenger vehicles

18,000 commercial trucks

The "Confederation" handles about 250 cars and the "Holiday Island" about 150 cars. On summer weekends there can be long lines with some cars having to wait for the next crossing.

The ferry service runs from May 1st to mid-December and the "Holiday Island" only runs during the summer months.

  • 4 weeks later...

Recently sailed on the Holiday Island from PEI to NS.

Had a reservation on the last run of the day, which was supposed to be the Confederation, but arrived early and NFL was nice enough to change it to the one before.

Had a good run until we arrived in Nova Soctia. After the Holiday Island had left part of the dock had collapsed and so they had to send a fishing boat in to sound the depth of the beam. Fortunately it was deep enough for the Holiday Island to dock. If not, I am not sure what would have happened!!!
