Board Admin A. Wong Posted July 16, 2009 Board Admin Report Posted July 16, 2009 My co-worker tipped me off to this iPhone app: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH6r2tIaRXU It is specific to the iPhone 3G S, and I think there is also a London Underground version.
R. McConnell Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 I went to the MTA roadeo today. It was underwhelming to say the least; there wasn't anything of great interest that I hadn't seen before, and they weren't giving rides on the museum buses as they had done for several roadeos in the past. In addition, the DesignLine bus was not there as I hoped. The museum buses in attendance were as follows: Fifth Avenue Coach Company #1263, 2124 (the double-decker buses) Green Bus Lines #10001 Jamaica Buses #3865 Liberty Lines #3006 New York Bus Service #1502 New York City Transit Authority #100, 1059, 2151, 3758, 4727, 5117, 5227, 6259, 8466, 8928, 9098 -- (too many green fishbowls! They should bring out something else for a change) Triboro Coach #621 (they affixed a blue MTA logo on the front for whatever reason) In addition, MCI #2185 was there (as usual) and there was a D60HF with an electronic side advertisement. Also in attendance were a number of classic cars from the 1950s and 1960s, something that hasn't been on display before. PS: there were at least two buses on the roadeo shuttle, one of which was an Orion VII NG HEV, and the other one (RTS) was displaying "HURRICANE SHUTTLE" on its destination signs.
aemoreira81 Posted July 26, 2009 Report Posted July 26, 2009 OriOn VII Demo Bus 1294 Is actually a TTC Revnue bus???Explain.....? 1294 at TTC today did indeed run briefly under MTA Bus. The bus as it ran here clearly looked TTC-spec, but ran here without colors; I wonder if it was a temporary diversion.

Orion has a demo numbered 1294A - it is a Next Gen hybrid with a lithium-ion battery - that has shown up in New York on at least two occasions. TTC's buses have much of their paintwork applied at the Mississauga factory before being shipped to Oriskany. If it was a TTC bus, than it would have had the TTC colours on it. Dan
R. McConnell Posted July 28, 2009 Report Posted July 28, 2009 Spotted 996 in service on the X51 this evening:
R. McConnell Posted July 29, 2009 Report Posted July 29, 2009 News: The MTA Bus Company will be purchasing Bee-Line's 400-series Orion Vs and its 200-series Orion VII HEVs, upon the arrival of the NABI 40-LFW hybrids at Bee-Line. Bee-Line's 400s were built in 1995 and 1996 and still have a few years left in them; as for the 200s, Bee-Line only owns four of them and probably wants to maintain a uniform hybrid fleet. It is not known when the Bee-Line buses will be delivered to MTA Bus, nor is it known if MTA Bus will repaint them into MTA livery.

SMS Posted July 31, 2009 Report Posted July 31, 2009 I was in NY on Saturday but unfortunately I had no idea the roadeo was on. Next year I guess.
aemoreira81 Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 I stand corrected on the 1294 bus. A sidenote: The NYCT/MTA Bus scheme is also now coming to older Long Island Bus units owned by Nassau County. Here is MTA #1568 in that livery. The hybrid delivery is now past halfway (with over 425 buses in service). 1
R. McConnell Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 Is the LI bus a repaint or a re-tape? Interesting to see that they kept the "This bus uses compressed natural gas as a fuel" text.
aemoreira81 Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 Is the LI bus a repaint or a re-tape? Interesting to see that they kept the "This bus uses compressed natural gas as a fuel" text. 1568 it is a repaint; 1456 (since retired) was a re-tape. (Four other O5 units at LIB have white backs with no rear stripe.)
Orion VIII Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 That's the first time I've seen an Orion plate on somewhere other than the front of the bus.
R. McConnell Posted August 7, 2009 Report Posted August 7, 2009 That's the first time I've seen an Orion plate on somewhere other than the front of the bus. For whatever reason, Long Island Bus had their Orion badges installed on the rear of the bus instead of the front. I don't know why... perhaps it's to leave space on the front for ads. I'm also very surprised that they didn't decide to paint over the Orion plate with white paint or remove it altogether, as they've done on other buses in the past.
aemoreira81 Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 The DesignLine EcoSaver IV model debuted in service in New York City. Here is one pic of it on the M42 route. If you ask me, it looks too much like a bullet.

aemoreira81 Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I feel bad for NYC bus fans after seeing that piece... The bus rode very well, and it doesn't look too bad (although on another forum, someone said it looks like an Oscar Mayer truck) However, one thing I do not get is why the bus has a rear spoiler.
R. McConnell Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I think it looks great; it's a welcome departure from the standard "tissue box" bus. Was the ride as quiet as the demo bus back in 2007? I really hope they don't think of a way to put a front advertisement on these buses.

I don't see how this model gets a front advert on it...possibly only a window-side and a rear ad.
dj.surf.lfs Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 I think it's a very nice looking bus. Too bad I didn't get to see/ride it last month...
stm_5307N Posted August 15, 2009 Report Posted August 15, 2009 (although on another forum, someone said it looks like an Oscar Mayer truck) OMG! That's so true!
smallspy Posted August 16, 2009 Report Posted August 16, 2009 However, one thing I do not get is why the bus has a rear spoiler. There looks to be an air intake underneath it. It might have been shaped like that to allow for a larger intake of air. Dan
Bus_Medic Posted August 16, 2009 Report Posted August 16, 2009 There looks to be an air intake underneath it. It might have been shaped like that to allow for a larger intake of air.Dan considering the thing runs on a turbine, the spoiler might be there as an exhaust diffuser. i'm sure it's actually quite small, but you've effectively venting a blowtorch out the top. in fact, i'm pretty sure GM vented the exhaust from their experimental gas turbine buses in a very similar manner. i'd wager out the top is the only safe way to do it. although it appears to be fibreglass and therefore flamable, so that's unlikely. i think you're right about it being for the intake side. that thing would consume vast quantities of air in operation. 'edit'- after examining the photo closely, i think the exhaust duct is tucked underneath and behind the spoiler slightly. the wing is there to mix the hot gases as much as possible with the ambient air while in motion.- just my intuition speaking here.

Now that I look at it again, I think you're right - the ends of the "spoiler" are curved down, which would separate the airstreams when the vehicle is in motion and would probably help keep the heated (but hopefully mixed) exhaust directly behind the vehicle instead of fanning it out.
