MTA NYCT Subway/Bus discussion

Recommended Posts

All 2004 Orion VII OG hybrids have been retired as the last 3 units (#6383, #6418, and #6423) have been retired overnight. On the Queens side of things, about 6 more units (including #6445 and #6485) have been decommissioned and removed from service. Also, if not mentioned, #6605 have been retired.

But is that one even confirmed? It could get scrapped eventually. #6148 may or may not also be still around somewhere as well.

I think 6148 has been off property for a good while now.

Have they set aside an Orion 7 hybrid for preservation? Should be fairly simple to save, and is decently significant.

#6365 Has been retired, but is currently sitting @ Eastchester depot. They can save any one of those tbh.

BTW, only 23 2004 Orion VII hybrids (or at this point, just buses in general) remain in service. They'll likely be gone by August at the latest. In terms of new buses, the current XD40 order is almost finished, with around 50-75 more buses to go (some of which will be for MTA bus Company. Those won't be here until 2020-2021). The 2019 Nova LFS batch however has about 110-120 units active and around 130 or so left to go. Also, supposedly, XDE40 #9510 has been built and is sitting at New Flyer at this time, so I assume this order may start sooner rather then later. These buses will likely kill of the rest of the NYCTA Orion VII OG hybrid fleet (6690 and up). Lastly, the 2019 batch of XD60s are being delivered with around 70 units in service (including some for MTA bus Company).

2006 Orion VII OG Hybrid #6634 is retired out of Manhatanville depot. Also 2018 New Flyer XN60 CNG #1080 was spotted training along the B63 line on 5th ave a day or 2 ago. Could this mean that the B63 could get artics at some point in the near future? We'll have to wait and see. I'll be keeping an eye on any developments on that front.

XN60s #1032-1036 WF to JG depot, so there maybe something to what I said the other day about these going on the B63 lines soon. Also 2012 New Flyer C40LF #351 WF to JG as well.

Also 2005 Orion VII OG Hybrid #6537 is now retired from LGA as are 7 more 2004 Orion VII OG Hybrids from QV depot (#6449 among them).

About 15 2004 Orion 7s left in service over all. Fun fact, as of this writing, there's still about 100 1998-1999 Novabus RTS's and about 10 2004-2005 Orion VII OG CNGs sitting at Eastchester scrap. I miss those buses already. 😢

Seems that the NYPD has gain ownership of 3 former NYCTA 2001-2002 MCI D4500 Cruisers recently. Numbers unknown at this time but they are assumed to all be #2800's. Also, all about 7-8 2004 Orion VII OG hybrids remain at Queens Village depot. The last of them will probably be gone by week's end, after that, no more 2004 model year buses (except for MCI's #3000-3054).

One of them is 2833 i think? That was the one stationed on 1st ave for the UN General Assembly.

Update: it’s now 6. That said this number changes daily so it doesn’t really matter anyway.

general note: At some point tonight i’ll get around to updating the wiki but it’ll be pretty much in vain since the remaining 6 will only be active for so long... FWIW of those 6, only 3 actually run and it seems like one of those 3 pulled in for the last time this morning (6487). If anyone’s curious, 6432 and 6473 are the other two.

Some of the #8700's are going to CA just for the summer since Yukon don't need that many buses since school is out.

I give them remaining #6400's (except for #6490-6499) til Friday.

Originally no but that’s changed to 25 from Yukon’s batch.

It’s believed to be an official allotment change now. CA has sent some 2015 LFS to yukon in exchange

The 2004 Orions were finally removed from the roster today, 8/1/19. Their numbers were 6432, 6445, and 6473. 6445 is a little misleading since it didn't do anything for the past two months, but 6432 and 6473 were very much active until recently. 6473 made its last run last Friday (the 26th) and 6432 did the final revenue run this past Monday the 29th on the Q46. So now that's a wrap regarding flipdots on transit buses (As the 2001-2002 MCI still are running around with those...). Retirement of the 2005 Orions is well underway.

And 2006's too apparently. I can't believe alot of the #6600's are being retired already in Manhattan (even ahead of the #6500's in Brooklyn) . Also, 2015-16 Nova LFS #8155 is out of service due to a bad wreck on Staten Island. Hit a tree hard with serious front end damage. Might possibly get retired.

Just an update, in terms of retirements, about 20 more 2005-2006 Orion VII OG hybrids just got decommissioned (included #6650) from Manhattanvile depot. Also 2009-2010 Nova LFSA #1201 is most likely retired now due to an engine fire it had the other day up in the Bronx. Second bus from that series to catch fire (with the first being #1205 back in circa 2015).

#6562 and #6563 are now retired out of FP depot. Gone with them are most of the #6600's (i.e. #6604-6606, #6631-6636, #6638-6642, #6644-6651, #6653-6654, #6656, 6658-6659, #6661-6669, #6671-6689). Only #6600-6603, #6607-6630, #6637, #6643, #6652, #6655, #6657, #6660, #6670, and #6690-6699 remains. I can't believe the MTA is getting rid of these 2005 and 2006 Orion VII OG hybrids so soon, especially the Manhattan units, they were in great shape! If I were them, I'd put these in storage to be used on a later date instead of scrapping them. That way, we would avoid another major bus shortage like when the 1998 and 1999 Novabus RTS's retired a few months ago or when the 1999 Orion 5.501 diesels retired 3 years ago!

2019 is just a big year for bus retirements for the MTA (and NICE) it seems. It's really strange how the MTA have not retired the last of the 2001-2002 MCI D4500s though. Those buses are on life support right now.

From the Brooklyn division, add #6527, #6565, and #6578 to the scrap list.

And here a couple of interesting news bits, Proterras #0018 and #0020 are at the SI division doing test runs on some lines out there. Also, #7850 has been reported to be at Ulmer Park, so I guess the last batch of XD40s are about to commence.

Makes sense to finally see a Proterra or two make it out to SI. I kind of figured they would try to hit all five boroughs.

Anyone else think it is safe to say the 2001-2002 MCI’s will make it 2020? Figure those will have to be the first replaced by the new order that is projected 2020-2021. I assume it will also take out all the 2004-2007 models as well. The 2002’s at Yukon run pretty much every day. Saw 2898 out today on a SIM1 for the morning rush.

Easily. They haven’t even awarded an order for replacements yet and transit and bus co are perpetually short on coaches

Some will remain in service probably. Most if not all of the 2006 and older buses will be retired. Last I heard the plan was to get 4300-4329 and 2210-2228 off island. 4300-4329 will either be retired or transferred to bus co (last check was retired) so at the very least 2210-2228 should take out any remaining 2006s...

Every depot with 2002s uses them every weekday. Even baisley park sometimes let them out on weekends, but they’re a disaster so that sort of makes sense...

Well, that's only if the rumors of MTA bus service cuts don't actually take place. If they cut a few express routes or even runs, that will easily wipeout the remaining 2001-2002 D4500s, maybe even some of the newer CLs as well. Hopefully, the MTA doesn't pull a NICE and chop a dozen lines or like what they did back in summer 2010. Though to be honest, those buses should have retired years ago, like back when the 1999 Orion Vs were leaving service. The MTA could have easily ordered 450 or so Prevost X3-45 buses, but didn't cause they like to under order like with the whole XN40/XN60 vs Orion VII OG CNG fisco.

What about those rejected D4500CT’s that are running NJ Transit 7101-7118 running out of Howell garage? Why were they rejected and how would those have affected the fleet?

There are still 30ish left from the 2001-2002 MCI batch. In total about 500 express buses are probably due for replacement. Funny thing at Yukon is those MCI’s are parked inside the building and never get placed in any of the outdoor areas the X3-45s are in.

The Yukon garage looks like they transferred out the Orion’s. They quietly bowed out. S79 SBS is now run exclusively on regular Nova’s (mix between both batches Yukon has). Is this the only SBS route without any marked buses for it?

The 2009 Orion VII Next Generation hybrids that were assigned to Yukon went to the inner city to replace some 2005 and 2006 Orion VII OG hybrids. That's why you don't see NGs on SI anymore (although there are 2-3 units left for operator training from what I heard), only EPA 10 3Gs.

None have been replaced. The XDE40s should take care of these.
