The MTA currently has three Orion V left, all running out of Eastchester Depot, on the Q50 and the Bx23, although West Farms might have two for supplemental service. They are #6025, #6081, and #6333.

What's everyone's top 3 favorite now retired buses NYCTA/Bus company/Long Island bus(Includes NICE bus as well)  between 1990 and 2004?

Hard for me to choose, but for me, it is the:

-1994 TMC RTS's #8600-8703

-1994-1995 Orion V CNGs #317, and #581-610

and

-2003 Orion VII OG CNGs #7560-7684/ 1998-2000 New Flyer  C40LFs #800-989 tie for third place.

From which branch?

Mtabc/nycta. Never really cared much for NICE/LIBs equipment beyond the old foothill transfers. I never really ventured into nassau back when those  old diesel 5s and the oldest cng 5s were around so i can't really claim those as my favorites. They sound absofrickinlutely nuts from the recordings though.. They looked nice too

Well as you know, the 2004s are still in service at the moment (I mean not literally at the moment, with it being a Saturday and all. I don't think NICE has sent out an Orion V CNG on a weekend since just before the 2017 doomsday 2.0 cuts). For MTA LIBus/ NICE bus, besides #1633-1699, I also loved the former 1996-1998 Orion V CNGs #1400-1525 and #1806-1821. I also really like the 1700's and 3G 1800s (the NG 1800s I like those too, but they can sure use a repaint for most of them).

It sucks that the OV didn't last longer. I remember growing up with those buses. That why my pfp pic pays tribute to the last time I got to ride an NYC one

I agree. Strangely enough, it's been almost 3 years since the last NYCTA Orion Vs retired at NYCTA. Bus Company retired theirs towards the end of 2016.

The last time I rode a NYCT Orion V was in early 2015. The last time I rode an MTA Orion V in general (NICE bus CNG) was in early 2017.

Seems like MHV depot is getting some 2005 Orion VII OG hybrids from FP depot. #6604 and #6605 IIRC are now assigned to MHV depot. Also #6536 from LGA depot to ECH scrap due to a smashed in front end.

Also, only 7  2004-2005 Orion VII OG CNGs remain in service. #7685 (aka #145), #7792, and #7815-7819 are all that remain from West Farms depot.

6606 also to MV

7792 was scrapped a month ago

These RTS's are dropping like flies. We're down to about 170 units remaining. #5062-5063 and #5200 among others were all sent to EC scrap.

I have some very surprising and extremely saddening news! It was announced today on the NY daily news that the MTA plans on retiring the last of the 1998 and 1999 Novabus RTS's on May 10 2019! Due to some average riders bitching about how "old buses always go to the poor neighborhoods", we are going to see the RTS's retire much sooner than anyone had initially thought. These will likely be the next buses to go after the remaining 2004-2005 Orion VII OG CNGs retire before month's end (which btw, would happen to be the one year anniversary since the 2003 Orion VII OG CNGs got retired on 3/31/2018). Those that complain about the RTS's being old will get the 2004 and 2005 Orion VII OG hybrids next, so the joke's on them!  I guess the remaining New Flyer D60HFs will be the last MTA or MTA related DD50 series buses left in service (or the 2004 Orion V CNGs at NICE bus, if they are still around...).

Interested to see how the bid for the new express buses goes. There's literally just a handful of the 2002 D4500s left at Yukon on Staten Island. Always nice when I am able to catch those on the road. I think those are the last buses on SI with the flip disc destination boards.

Yeah, unless they get some 2004 Orion VII OG hybrids for some reason...

More bad news form the MTA folks! Apparently, the last few 2002-2004 New Flyer D60HF Galaxy buses are about to be retired. Only 4-5 units remain with buses #127 and #5659 being among them. I can't believe these may very well go even before the last remaining 2004-2005 Orion VII OG CNGs, let alone the RTS's (#135 units remain as of this writing).

Highly doubt it. Seems like SI will just stay with the Orion VII Next Generations, Orion VII, and the Novas for now. Interesting that the 2012 X3-45s are the buses that I see the least often on SI and there are supposedly some of those around.

That's because those 2011-2012 units are vastly outnumbered by the newer 2014-2016 X3-45s. When the SI depots first got them back in 2014-2015, they ended up displacing a lot of their 2011-2012 counterparts and those went to Brooklyn (Ulmer Park) to retire their 2001 and 2002 MCI D4500s at the time.

Speaking of retirement, I am sad to say this, but as of April. 1, 2019 , The New Flyer D60HF Galaxy buses have officially been retired! Kingsbridge depot just marked off their last 7 buses as OOS yesterday, thus ending an era! These buses served our city very well and now the only question now at this point would be, will they try to preserve a D60HF this time? This is their last chance and I honestly hope they do. In any case, Rest In Peace Galaxy buses, you will be missed, for this is the first major fleet extinction since the 1999 Orion Vs got retired back in 2016 (now I need to know if the remaining 2004 Orion V CNGs at NICE bus are retired now too, cause I heard a rumor that they are) ! New Flyer D60HF ~1996-2019 😭

Also, the MTA as a whole retired about 8 more RTS's yesterday 2 out of FB, 4 out of UPK, and about 2-3 out of JA ( among was #5132, one of the last if not the last blackbacked bus in the whole system!).

It's one of the last. Unless they have been repainted since last check, 5147, 5149, 5126, 5174, 5115 all have black backs still.

A small note on 5115-Someone remarked on facebook that's it's "done"....... it's not. It's still registered to Ulmer Park....... This isn't the first time 5115 has been taken OOS, and it's (obviously) returned to service after a period of inactivity,

Well, if that's the case, it might really be finished this time seeing how the TA is seemingly hell bent on making that May 10th deadline. As for #5115 being a blackback... I don't really count that one, cause IIRC, that bus was only partially repainted back in the early 2010s and never got a full whiteback.

But tbh, I'm surprised those last remaining 2004-2005 Orion VII OG CNGs are still around and have outlasted the D60HFs! Why did they retire them so fast though? It was not even 2 weeks ago we had 40 units left in service.

Part of it likely had something to do with the influx of LFSA. Gun Hill and Quill had been taking delivery of 5531-5602 for a while without retiring that many D60s so the TA had built up a lot of "momentum" to retire the D60s gradually, it's just that they chose to do it all at once very quickly at the end. Also, the delay in delivery between Gun Hill's and Quill's part of the order helped make it more dramatic. Quill got the vast majority of their LFSA all within a very short time period and once most were put in service, that gave them the capability to send the lowest 5200 LFSAs up to West Farms to retire those buses. The (simultaneous) nail in the coffin was the delivery of the XD60s to Flatbush, which allowed them to ship the 5300s up to a mix of Kingsbridge and West Farms. Gun Hill didn't receive anything (In fact they sent an LFSA or too over to Kingsbridge to aid them in retiring their D60s) "second-hand", they just held onto their final 6 units forever and then just retired them... Tuskegee received a few misc 2011-2012 LFSA displaced from Quill to retire their D60s.

Tl;dr, Quill getting most of their 2019 LFSA all at once, Gun Hill taking their time, and Flatbush sending their 2012-2013 LFSA up north.

We'll see. If the MTA keeps retiring 4-5 RTS per day then it's plausible, but that's really hard to keep up. They'll definitely be gone by the end of May though, that's for sure a guarantee.
