Rip the train operator who saved lives. Oh those are certainly scrapped for sure. Those units were built in the early 2000s (1999-2001 era). I don't see the MTA fixing 20 year old cars in that shape, especially due to the lack of manpower they are suffering from due to the ongoing global crisis. The MTA needs to restore a sense of order to the system and instill confidence in riders who will need to use it as normal operations begin to be restored in the near future, as well as for the safety, health and well-being of employees who have had to deal with this issue in addition to the other hazards they are now facing. The images of homeless encampments on trains became a national news story and no doubt would have depressed ridership even more had it not been addressed. MTA buses are all over the place now. Someone saw a 2012 MCI D4500CT (#2265) on the Q46 last night and a Prevost X3-45 on the S79 +SBS+. There are also reports of EPA10 Orion VII 3G diesels running in the Bronx. Next we'll see Orion VII NG CNGs from NICE bus running on Bronx and Brooklyn routes (lol foam)! And technically, if they really wanted to, NICE could sell those 2008-2011 (#1700-1839) Orion VII NG CNGs back to the MTA once there FTA 12 year service lives have been met in Nassau county since those Orions were brought with federal money. Whether or not the MTA would purchase them is another matter (though I could see them taking those back). Anyways, 2005 Orion VII OG hybrids #6515 and #6516 are now retired from Fresh Ponds depot. As a side note, does anyone know if the XE40s, Proterra BE40s, or XDE40s are in service anymore? I haven't heard anything more of those test buses... Also, 2007 Orion VII OG hybrid #6822 from ENY depot was involved in a major crash on the B12 the other day. Several vehicles including a Dodge Charger were totaled and several people received non-life threaten injuries. There were no injuries among the ten passengers on the train, the MTA’s interim President of NYC Transit Sarah Feinberg said in a statement Wednesday. A northbound A train entering the station became separated between the sixth and seventh cars around 1 a.m. “At this time, we believe this to be an isolated incident, however, I am launching a full investigation, and out of an abundance of caution, the entire R179 fleet is being pulled from service until further notice. We have redeployed additional spare cars and minimal impacts to service are anticipated,” Feinberg said in the statement. The MTA has previously pulled 298 of their stock of the issue-plagued R179 cars made by Canada-based Bombardier as recently as six months ago. In December and January, two reports of subway doors coming loose from locking mechanisms and sliding open triggered the removal of the R179 cars from the system for inspection. They were returned at the end of January after examinations by a third-party firm, Bombardier and the MTA. Last year, city Comptroller Scott Stringer released an audit of Bombardier, which supplies the city with most of its subway cars, and its $600 million contract that included the 298 trains then-under review. The comptroller’s audit found that “Bombardier consistently failed to produce acceptable work, meet project milestones and correct critical structural defects in a timely manner – resulting in a three-year delay” as well as failures of oversight by the MTA. The new issue with the R179 cars, which serve the A, C, J and Z lines, also arises on the cusp of New York City’s anticipated Phase 1 of reopening on June 8th. Subways will run on a more frequent schedule by Monday, when manufacturing, construction and some retail businesses are expected to reopen under the first phase of the state's plan. The subway system will continue to shut down between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. to allow for a nightly cleaning of the trains. “This marks the latest unacceptable issue with one of Bombardier’s R179 cars,” Feinberg said in her statement. “Customer and employee safety is New York City Transit’s North Star. We will not compromise one inch on safety. It's not on property yet, but unless something goes wrong, it should be at some depot in short order MTA will be taking over the SIM23 and 24 from Academy in the coming years. It runs from Columbus Circle to Brooklyn College on Flatbush Ave and is largely aimed at 2 train crowds. Starts this sunday June 28.
