Transit’s R42 retirement party went off without a hitch today. They put stickers to replicate the original 1969 rollsigns on the two cars leading northbound

I wouldn't say without a hitch...we were almost an hour late to finish because of the delay from the bridge.

And quite frankly I'd say that was a pretty good thing since it essentially became an unplanned photo stop.

AFAIK there were no equipment troubles, no over-stimulated nuts disrupting service, and no serious incidents, so I'm quite happy with how smooth everything went.

I did hear that some of the over-stimulated nuts had to be told to stop using profanity, as they were loudly swearing every time an R179 passed by.

Up next gonna be the R32 sadly. I thought they'll be retired once the R211s come. Guessing the MTA wanna get rid of them once and for all.

Probably the next thing you know the R179s botta have another breakdown (not gonna jinx)

It is fake, there is no official word from the MTA just yet on that. BTW, Shouldn't the new 2020-2021 Prevost X3-45 pilot bus be here by now? Also, what are the numbers going to be? #2790+?

On order section of the wiki has all the relevant info

Hmm wonder how they will work the delivery... will those approximately 32 remaining 2001/2002 D4500s be the first to go? A big part of me wants some of those to be amongst the last given they are the last flip dots.

The numbers seem interesting that only 50 go to NYCTA with Charleston and Yukon getting them. Castleton has 19 D4500CT (2008’s) and they were supposed to be replaced as well. There’s 7 D4500’s at Yukon (2002’s) which for sure are replaced at 18 years of service. At Charleston you have 29 D4500CLs (2007) and 17 D4500CTs (2013)... between the two depots that are getting buses that’s 53 buses being replaced by 50 buses? Not going to be good if it truly is a decrease in fleet size.

It’s impossible to say with the MTA. The scrapping is rather arbitrary and not always in order. Usually they have done it depending on when a bus has a major failure that is uneconomical to repair or a scrap-once-it-breaks-down (regardless of the seriousness/cost of the issue) thing. And other times it’s completely arbitrary: all of them are gonna get scrapped anyway, so what difference does it make if it’s 2852 or 3112. They’ve been doing cosmetic work on the 2001-2002 D4500s, re-plushing the seats, putting in the USB ports, etc. so they’re not any “inferior” to the younger CLs for instance.

The only buses up for retirement IIRC are the 4300s and the flipdots. I have not heard anything about the 2008 CTs being retired. The 2013 CTs are certainly not up for retirement.

There's no way the 2007 MCI D4500CLs in the #4300's are up for replacement, same with the #3300's and #3400s from MTA Bus Company. These new buses will kill off all remaining #2800s, #2900s, The #3000's, #3100s, #3200s, and MAYBE the worst of the #3300s, but not anything newer just yet, barring service cuts or what not.

BTW, There's 85 2005-2006 Orion VII OG hybrids left in service, the oldest local bus now is #6491. #6490, #6493, #6494, #6506, #6621, and about 5 other units just got retired over the last couple of days.

Yes, there is a way. I don’t pull this stuff out of my rear or anything, I know people who inform me of what the MTA intends to retire. The idea was to get all non-D4500CTs out of NYCT in the first place. For a while even before the order was placed, the idea was to maybe move the 4300s over to Bus Co. As time passed, it’s looking like they will be retired. As an FYI, this order is only replacing the worst of the non-D4500CT fleet. The only fleet that is *guaranteed* to retire are the 2001 and 2002 MCI D4500s. Any of the remaining CLs are eligible for retirement if they break down more often, have a sudden major failure that is not worth repairing, have higher mileage, etc. And if that means a few 3000s are kept and a few 3400s are retired, then so be it.

2020 Prevost X3-45 #1300 is built and is testing around upstate. Base fleet numbers are to be #1300-1606 with options taking it to IIRC #1636 if used.

Yeah, I always thought it would be a good idea to send NYCTA's CLs to MTA bus just for the spare parts factor and perhaps send MTA bus Company's CTs to NYCTA for the same reason. However as the years go by and these get closer to retirement, that gets less and less likely. The MTA should have done that like 4-5 years ago.

renumbered likely because the operator perished in the accident

Fresh Ponds depot had a major slow down yesterday due to coronavirus sicken b/os. They need to shut everything down tbh.

They can't shut everything down - public transit is still vital for many health care workers, grocery store employees and other essential workers.  Rear-door boarding is a start but MTA should be shifting to free rides and putting up a partition on buses to prevent access to the front, with the front door and ramp used only for passengers who use a mobility device.  Also, the express routes should be run with transit buses to avoid every passenger having to pass by the operator both entering and exiting.

Some people, like myself, don't require the ramp and do not have a mobility device, but still need the kneel feature. Short legs and arthritic knees make the big step at the back almost impossible. Also people (especially older folks) returning from grocery stores with full pull-carts can't be expected to lift them up the big step at the back. So I am hoping drivers will realize this. (Yes, I know I live in Edmonton, but I feel this applies to every city using the rear door boarding).

Diesel* transit buses. When Baisley Park was sending hybrids on the QM4 and 21, they had a bad habit of shitting themselves in the Midtown Tunnel in the middle of rush hour. May take a day or two to scrounge together the buses (And remove the limiters) to do such a thing but it could work? They haven't cut enough service to make transits available for all runs though, and there doesn't seem to be an indication that they want to/will cut more local trips beyond what's been cut because of operator shortages.

R142s 6347-6350 were damaged in a fire at Central Park North–110th Street station while running on the 2 line. One MTA worker was killed and 16 people injured. Here is the damage from the cars (click the underlined wording). Heres articles of the accident:

More information is present on the NYC transit Forums right here: https://www.nyctransitforums.com/topic/51397-new-york-city-subway-car-listing/

Its possibly arson as there was reported fires in the subway prior to this one. Also more pics of the damage cars are on that link.
