Eglinton Crosstown line

What are the limitations they can't phase this line to start the western segment for service instead of having the entire 19km in service in one shot?

If anything, it would be easier to open the east end of the line first, not the west. Not as much signalling, and fewer life safety and elevating devices to worry about. Of course, there is the minor issue of not having a maintenance facility to worry about....

But the fact of the matter is that there are quite a few stations that right now are pretty damn close to the critical path of the project that would preclude any particular section of the line being available for revenue service sooner than the rest. For all of the progress that they've done at Weston and Keelesdale, they are still excavating at Fairbank. Oakwood is a dirt hole in the ground. And nevermind the potential issues that could still arise at Cedarvale and Eglinton.

Some details here about the Flexity production and signalling.

Of note, 30 cars have been manufactured to date, but only 2 have been accepted. The target for acceptance of the first 6 cars is July 1, 2020, while the target to deliver the first 42 to Mount Dennis is March 31, 2021. They then have another full year to deliver the remaining 34 of the 76 cars.

Hard to imagine how they wouldn't get four more cars accepted in the next 3 months, or 12 more cars built in the next year - unless there's some force majeure event nullifying the contract.

Might be really boring to do 600km around the yard. As for signaling system in cab, it must be really hard for Bombardier to work with that company named Bombardier!

Really? I can, if a third of the workforce is laid up, or self quarantined.

I’m already bracing for my vacation time to disappear at the very least, covering for others unable to work.

Given the fact they are still working on the overhead along Eglinton and track work, very hard to get cars on the mainline for testing as well a signalling system. Mount Dennis station isn't comply with the tail end tunnel not in place and only 25% of that missing tunnel only has walls form it. You can't get a car into the station due to scaffolding being in the way.

They are using the ][ track overhead system in the station like St Clair W station loop and no clue what taking place underground.

BBD will find a way to screw up Metrolinx order, but they will pay Metrolinx a lot more money on what they gave TTC based on Metrolinx cost for late delivery.

Shot the area today including Keeledale and Caledonia. Photos will not be on line for a few days when I have time to work on them.

Other can verify this, but KW seen BBD wash their hand on their signalling system according to info posted.

If they got two cars accepted without using the mainline, presumably they can accept four more without using the mainline.

BBD seems have had far more success with the Flexitys than Alstom has had with the cars that Metrolinx replaced them with for Line 6 Finch West.

They have installed the overhead at the crossover in the west end and all support columns from Victoria Park to just before Birchmount have the brackets on them for the overhead system

Mount Dennis Station and portal going underground have St Clair West overhead and expect the underground be the same since Ottawa is setup that way as well.

There is no way to test cars in the east end as the tracks and stations are far from completion. Were do you store them, let alone maintain them and getting them there?? Tracks in place from Victoria to Brichmount, tracks and crossover coming to the surface from the Science Centre to the to DVP. Haven't look at the west end for the Science Centre in a year or 2

Look at TTC cars having weld fix and they go through 2 facilities before been return to TTC.

Metrolinx thinks nothing on blowing money on spurious things. You don't think that they wouldn't pay for a security firm to keep a car or two safe while they store it overnight in one of the underground stations during the upcoming testing regime?

That's just it, Metrolinx is so spurious as an organization, it's anybody's guess.  It would hardly be surprising to see them continue blowing money left, right, and centre on the frivilous things but not on the stuff that would enable them to get serious work done and then whine about how things are falling behind.  Or, as you note, they could call up their security company, book some extra coverage, and call up their transportation provider and get a couple of cars shipped over to the east end for the line and get down to work; it could easily go either way.  Frankly, I've long past the point where I could see Metrolinx paying big money to have someone make up a custom Twister spinner with all their decision making outcomes printed on the legend and then create yet another a >$100k/year sunshine list position for someone to work the damn thing so they know which way the organization's going on any given issue on any given day.

They already have a security company taking care of their facilities

Technically.....

They - being Metrolinx - don't. They are not in possession of any of the facilities as yet. Crosslinx, on the other hand, as the building contractor, does. Although with most of the construction sites still operating on or near a 24/7 schedule, there isn't a huge need for a lot of security just yet.

From what I know, they have stationed security at 85 industry, some of the construction sites as well, they have two security vehicles running all eglinton line, one for the west side, and one for the east side, I don't know details.

Thats a pretty cool flyover. I had no idea how much progress has been made, since I have avoided the eglinton area completely for a few years now due to the construction traffic & delays.

One thing I find surprising, why they went back underground at don mills, then back out?

For the fact that Science Centre Stn would cross the largest at-grade intersection being Don Mills Rd, along with being a accommodating a bus terminal, the underground cut for that station is smart

Isn't Sci Cen Stn being built with provision for future connection to the Ontario Line? Kind of like Finch West Stn in 2017.

It probably is. For some reason, I read this thinking of John Tory’s Smart Track system

It was definitely envisioned that there would eventually be higher order transit along the Don Mills corridor when they were planning the Science Centre station design. However, I have no idea if they built any rough-in for a future line or connection to one.

The concept for the Ontario Line had not been created before the Crosstown construction contracts were awarded, and once a construction contract is awarded the contractor can and will charge huge fees for any minor changes from those signed plans. So IMO it is unlikely that there are significant accommodations for the future Ontario Line that are being built in the station today.

As for Finch West Station, the LRT planning was significantly more advanced than Don Mills, as Finch West was one of the three priority lines (alongside Eglinton Crosstown and Sheppard East). The mode (LRT) was also known, which makes it easier to plan for, unlike Science Centre, whereas the Don Mills line at the time had an unknown timeframe for construction and has now switched technologies twice (LRT to subway to some unknown lighter high-frequency technology).
