Apparently Metrolinx is in talks with an "unamed manufacturer" for a possible alternative to Bombardier.

From an operations point of view, it makes sense in the long run since you will be able to concentrate them on one or two lines once Finch and (hopefully) Sheppard come online if that matters in the first place.

Might be Alstom or Siemens, both are building LRVs for other cities in Canada. Although Bombardier has a bad reputation, the fact that they've opened a new assembly line at Millhaven could speed up the production of the LRVs.

The the hole that Metrolinx digs itself gets deeper....

I'm starting to think Metrolinx are getting into "there is stuff they don't know that they don't know" territory.

I've thought that for quite a while now. And frankly, it seems to get proven with startling regularity.

Metrolinx doesn't have time for another bid. They'll have to hand someone the job which this unidentified manufacture can charge anything they want. I don't see how Metrolinx will get it's first vehicle from another manufacture in time unless they completely strip the Canadian content requirement. Calgary's S200s are built in the States. Alstom doesn't have a plant here. Those trains are assembled on site. Alstom doesn't have a site and heck they can't use the Crosstown yard cause it's under construction by Crosslinx.

Then it gets tricky. Bombardier is contracted through crosslinx to install the signaling system and maintaining the vehicle. Bombardier is known to install three proprietary systems, namely BOMBARDIER ORBIFLO, Automated Vehicle Inspection System (AVI System) and BOMBARDIER CITYFLO 650 on the LRVs. I highly doubt Bombardier would or even have the ability to maintain another supplier's vehicles and would want out on the contract. This just turns into a mess. Metrolinx is playing with fire.

Just Metrolinx trying to get out of the order as now they see they do not need all those cars ordered!

Instead of cancelling the order and trying to make a mess of this, why don't they just build Sheppard East and Finch West? There's also the Crosstown West and East extensions slated for the future, Hamilton's LRT line, and the Hurontario LRT. There really should be no shortage of LRV demand if they actually get these projects built before 2025...

Election year next year, Looks like the Liberals will have a hard time getting reelected. With a change of governments any or all of those projects could be cancelled

On the other hand, the conservatives might have learned their lesson after their "subways for Toronto at the expense of 905 transit" plan predictably backfired.

I wanted to put this to the "TTC in the News" section but I don't think that this involving TTC in the news, rather it being Metrolinx and Bombardier's legal dispute.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone knows the difference between line station, terminal station, hub station, interchange station....? is there an article or something that clarify the difference for each kind of stations?

thanks

Some of that is standard terminology. Terminal station is end of the line; line station is on the line but not at an end. Interchange station is where there's some other higher-order (busway, LRT, subway) transit line.

"Hub" station is one of those Metrolinx concepts of a "mobility hub". My definition is "we'll have a nice bike rack and a parking lot and a bus loop", but I'm being cynical. I'm sure Metrolinx' vision is much grander than that.

Big Plans in Store for the Transformation of Don Mills & Eglinton

Naturally this proves that the Relief Line is not necessary and we should be spending billions to build subway lines to parking lots in suburbia.

Posted from an ambulance taking me to the nearest hospital to have my tongue surgically removed from my cheek.
