Shaun
That's cute. But does the smaller bus save money on operating costs?
A. Wong
Nice photo! Looks nice, no rear window optioned. Saving on costs depends on a lot of factors. The J3500 has a Cummins L9 engine whereas the J4500 has a Cummins ISX12 or DD13, so there would be theoretical savings in fuel consumption. There's also one less axle, so less tires to replace, etc. The highest operating cost is the driver cost, so the reduced capacity of the bus might not work to the cost saving advantage (fewer seats to sell). MCIBUS
True for the seats but if the majority of trips on that route have less then 40 passengers per trip it might be a savings(I think, not exctly sure)
Shaun
Possibly a 20% savings in fuel? But I would think that having more standard equipment would make sense.
Oc4526
It seems the J3500's are being used on the Ottawa <-> North bay runs. I saw one turning from Terry fox -> Katemavik. Last night around 10:45pm

MCIBUS
This is only a guess but I suspect the J3500 are used mid wek while the 45 footers are used on weekends or holidays? Ottawa<>North Bay

Ottawa<>North Bay They have historical ticket data and real-time sales data for the trips each day - It may just depend on ticket sales and what's available in the yard. Joshuamumble
MCI D4505s 1902 and 1905 were operating an extremely busy from Toronto to North Bay trip today, partly because of increased demand to cottage country Photos were taken at Highway 407 Station for the 10:00 northbound trip

I would expect most trips to be doubled up. The destination is not cottage country (kinda cold for cottages) but students returning home from university. Joshuamumble
I've been noticing that some of the MCI D4505s have a "B" prefix with the fleet number... is this a new numbering scheme? These coaches are numbered as B56xx

Flalex72
ONTC will start White River - Thunder Bay service in April, 6 days a week. It looks like they sent a Temsa up to Lakehead in Thunder Bay for the announcement. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/thunder-bay-ontario-northland-bus-service-1.5461065

I just read that Ontario Northland is working on starting a Thunder Bay to Winnipeg schedule also. That would be an interesting turn of events indeed. Especially with ONT interlining their freight services with Greyhound in most of Ontario.

People have been asking for train to be re-instated.

And if were lucky enough maybe we will see Rider Express and Ontario Northland and Maple Bus Lines co operating together as Maple already has a established depot And Since ONT carries freight maybe we can see some cooperation in that area also. Also all companies except Maple use the Betterez ticketing system which we use in Alberta with Cold Shot also.
UrbanToronto
So much for Kasper, which already runs minibuses from Thunder Bay to White River and to Winnipeg via Sioux Lookout.
roeco
From Thunder Bay to White River I assume will be a night run in order to connect at 7 am in White River heading East. It will be interesting to see if ONT does go all the way to Winnipeg I assume they will use the TCH!

It will be interesting to see if ONT does go all the way to Winnipeg I assume they will use the TCH! Ontario generally does not refer to a specific highway as the "Trans Canada Highway" like the western provinces do; we typically always refer to them by their (King's) Highway number, with the TCH as a sort of secondary designation, almost like a scenic route type of designation. This is because there are many different routes/branches the Trans Canada Highway network takes through Ontario, so there is no one single Trans Canada Highway like there is in the western provinces. By "TCH" in that area, I presume you are referring to using Highways 11 and 71, via Fort Frances? There is not a lot of population in that area of the province, on either of those routes. Kenora (population 15096) is by far the largest urban centre west of Thunder Bay, and it's west of Highway 71 (so served by either route). Dryden (on Hwy 17) and Fort Frances (on Hwy 11) are almost identical in size (both around 7500 residents). The next largest urban centre near Highway 17 is Sioux Lookout (population 5272), much larger than the only other urban centre near Highway 11, Atikokan (population 2753). Add to that the fact that Highway 17 is a shorter and more direct route than 11/71, and it makes a lot more sense to go that way.
roeco
Looks like Ontario Northland will change their service up a bit when they start running to Thunder bay. They will instead of going beyond White River to Hearst instead will go to Thunder Bay and will contract out the White River to Hearst Service.
