Calgary Transit CTrain Service Disruptions

Recommended Posts

  • 4 weeks later...

Lots of fun in the core today, from the announcements it sounded like a substation blew, and when I went down 7th on the #9 there was smoke/steam pouring out of a manhole across from 1st Street and Enmax and transit were all there. Plus interruptions due to the rallies that held up traffic, CPS and Transit enforcement were using 7th to herd the protesters along, some intersections there were upwards of a dozen vehicles and twice that many people trying to direct the flow.

CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

-----------------------------------------------------------------

At 1:03 this afternoon fire crews responded to reports of

smoke and heat coming from a manhole cover near 7 Ave. and 1

St. SW. Upon investigation crews found a below-grade

transformer vault that may have caught fire and was filling

the area with heat and smoke. This smoke was venting into

downtown from below grade.

Fire crews were able to quickly assess the problem and

ensured proper cooling of the vault and surrounding area.

At present, Enmax, City Transit and Fire Crews remain on

scene and are assessing the damage. The fire and smoke have

been controlled. Residual water was pumped out of the

underground area to make the vault safer and easier for

workers on scene. Air monitoring systems are presently being

used to ensure the atmosphere continues to be safe as repairs

get underway.

The LRT has no power at this time and is not running in the

downtown area. Estimations suggest that power may be restored

by 10:00 pm the evening, assuming repairs to the transformer

vault go as expected.

Not sure if this is related to several of the 201's being spotted with 2 car consists instead of the usual 3 car consists,, but something was happening in the downtown core again as I heard there were some route 551's out and about. Anyone know what that was all about?

I don't know about the 551s, but we're supposedly going back to two-car trains on Sundays...

A van t-boned a 2 car SD160 (route 201) at 7st, the van slid through the intersection. I would image the van ran a red light, but from what I heard the damage was minimal and no one was hurt. 7th ave was closed for about an hour.

I don't know about the 551s, but we're supposedly going back to two-car trains on Sundays...

Yup, thats what I heard too. I think the LRV office wants to catch up on maintenance, and reduce wear and tear on the trains.

More maintenance this weekend beginning Friday night. All 201 trains heading north from Somerset will end at Stampede Vic Park then return south, you must transfer to the outbound side of the platform to head to Dalhousie.

CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

-----------------------------------------------------------------

On 2009 July 10 at 2258 hours a southbound City of Calgary C

-Train struck a pedestrian near the intersection of 25 Avenue

and MacLeod Trail South West. There had been a large number

of pedestrians in the area as this intersection is in close

proximity to the entry of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede

Grounds. The intersection is equiped with mechanical arms,

red flashing lights and a bell. All of these warning

mechanisms were working and activated when the train

approached. A number of pedestrians had stopped noticing the

train.

A 39 year old male pedestrian walked eastbound on 25 Avenue,

past several of the stopped pedestrians directly in front of

the train. The driver of the train honked the horn, and

immediately began emergency braking. The train was unable to

stop prior to striking the pedestrian.

The speed of the train was well below the allowable maximum

for this location.

The pedestrian was transported to hospital by Calgary

Emergency Medical Service with life threatening head

injuries. Alcohol is believed to be a factor.

Any witnesses with information are requested to contact Cst.

Keith Peters of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section at

403-567-4000.

What a mess it was yesterday! I went through Erlton 8 minutes before the incident, lots of people in the area and it happened moments before the fireworks. Trains were single tracking from Stampede to 39ave till after 0200 in the morning.

7th AVe. closure this weekend: http://www.calgarytransit.com/detours/201_...ion_090731.html This is going to require a lot of buses and more than likely, the D60LFR's will be providing most of the service as this route 551 this time around looks like will be operating from Erlton Station all the way to Sunnyside. Give yourself LOTS of extra time this weekend.

There was a fatality on the NW on Saturday night, involving a U2 consist (appeared to be heading NB) between Banff Trail and the Crowchild tunnel. Initial reports were it was a person who had been camping in the trees along the track. They left a single SD160 consist running from Brentwood to Crowfoot, and shuttles between Brentwood and Lions Park according to what was said on the radio

One of the cars on Key 45 on the 202 blew a traction motor today, they were single tracking eastbound between City Hall and Bridgeland for about an hour. There is a signal lockout on the inbound track between Whitehorn and Mcknight (outbound track closed) as well this evening due to some track maintenance.

201 southbound was delayed during the evening rush hour after for some reason, a car drove onto the tracks at 39th avenue (of course, among other delays on the system due to the slippery conditions).

Here's a pic from a Ctrain commuter: http://yfrog.com/353g7oj

Man that is just beyond sensible understanding....like why???? how????
