They've also ordered 20 D60LFR's if I recall the PR from NFI.

I believe the order on the books with New Flyer now.

Over a year ago (Oct. 2006) when I/we were in Winnipeg it sounded like DE60LF's were coming in 2007 IIRC. Then there were various changes/ issues that came up with their BRT scheme (again, IIRC) and now the DE60LF's are coming in 2009.

I lived in Winnipeg 1997-2005, hence I really enjoy these updates. Thank you all so much.

When did Winnipeg start getting 60ft busses? Any idea of the route they'll be running on?

PS. Really appreciate the Winnipeg roster. Could someone please point out a website with other city's rosters and historical roster info? Thanks.

Hmm.... I wonder if Beaver Bus Lines will end up loosing their Selkirk Commuter run if this all happens?

The Selkirk city transit plan wouldn't replace or compete with the Selkirk-Winnipeg commuter run. If anything, Beav' might be the logical contract operator for the city service.

The City of Selkirk sent out a call for proposals more than a year ago for a transit operation but I gather it was something of a joke. It was based on the successful operator recovering something like 60 or 75% of operating costs from the farebox. Wildly unrealistic for a community of 9,000.

I wonder if anyone bid on it.

  • 3 months later...

I just joined this forum a few days ago and am finding my way around. Seems that no one has posted about the D40LFR #701, which arrived about a month ago. I guess that makes it old news, but thought I would post it here since it seems no one else has. The articulated bus we had on loan, was also returned a few weeks ago. FWIW.

My information will always be a little out of date as this is only a hobby for me. But those two buses are the latest AFAIK. Otherwise, we are running tons of D40LFs plus we still have some D901s and D901As plus D40s from the 1980s in service. Classics are starting to drop off due to frame and corrosion issues and even D40s are being retired as we become a virtual low floor wasteland. Interesting to note that despite the influx of low floor vehicles, some of the best D40s are still being rebuilt fairly regularly. Units like 360, 677, 684, 693 are emerging in the newer white paint scheme which really looks good on those IMO.

The Manitoba Transit Heritage Association (MTHA) recently added Orion 1 #953 to their roster. The MTHA is a rather active and innovative group I must say. Oh and a little while ago they got ex-Beaver #28 (circa 1960 35' fishbowl with square marker lights), which incredibly was in revenue service with Beaver until 2007. But Beaver has other active fishbowls and these can still be seen on the streets of Winnipeg in school service. They've even got the right sound to them and everything.

Winnipeg can be a good place for bus fans as long as you behave yourself and are discrete about your photography. Don't trespass, follow the rules, get advance permission etc etc. My best photos have been from public streets actually. We're unfortunately not immune to the mass paranoia that exists these days when someone pulls out a large camera.

Hope this helps.

Classics are starting to go? When I was there in 2006 they were refurbishing Classics, and the Classics seemed like they would still be around for awhile. Too bad to hear about that.

We were hardly discrete when taking photos! 3 people all with big cameras standing on a street corner... and not a single problem. I believe we had one or two inquisitive drivers who found it interesting to see us all over the place, but not a single negative comment from anyone.

Sorry to bring you the bad news, M Parsons. But yes, the 300s are on the way out. I know for sure 333 is in the boneyard and there may be some others. I think we'll lose 10 this year. Nice that you got that roster shot of the 308 in revenue service at Unicity.

You obviously had better luck than me busfanning, but that's not a surprise when you consider that I seem to be a magnet for all the power-tripping security types around. That's everywhere I go, not just WPG. I've even had a GO driver once get out of his bus and prevent me from photographing his license plate on a public street. What can you do? If you stand up to these people you just escalate the situation. Your approach of standing on street corners is a good one. Not flawless, but good.

Not so sure about bikeracks, mike.

Several injured in bus-car crash

Updated: June 7 at 07:40 AM CDT

A Winnipeg Transit bus driver, half a dozen passengers and two occupants of a car were taken to hospital after the car and bus collided around 10 p.m. last night — the impact sending the bus into the side of a building at Talbot Avenue and Stadacona Street.

An off-duty firefighter who was nearby rushed to help the injured people and told the Free Press the injuries didn't appear to be life-treatening.

A bus and car were involved in an accident at Talbot Avenue and Stadacona Street at about 10 p.m. Friday, sending the bus crashing into a building. (Mike Aporius / Winnipeg Free Press )

A police spokesman confirmed that none of the injured suffered life-threatening injuries.

A number 44 bus on the Grey route was headed northbound on Stadacona and was in the process of turning east onto Talbot on a red light when an eastbound car on Talbot went through the intersection and hit the bus, witnesses told the Free Press.

The bus smashed into Provincial Mat Services Ltd. at 307 Talbot Ave.

A woman who witnessed the aftermath said the scene looked "horrible."

"Glass is all over the ground. It looks awful," the woman said." The (bus's) windshield was folded like an accordion."

Looks like this low floor stuff isn't so safe in the event of a collision. Had the passengers in the bus of been in a regular seating position for a bus, there would have been far fewer injuries here IMO.

Yikes. Well I don't think any vehicle hitting a wall at speed could be safe. Lucky it missed that pole or the driver may not be here today. Also, from the picture it seems the passengers' injuries would not have been from sitting in those seats, unless they were standing in front of the passenger wheelwell. The injuries are probably from teh sudden stop and hitting the building.

I've always thought New Flyer D40LF's hold up exceptionally well in accidents, having seen what they look like after accidents with them here in Calgary. It takes a lot for the body work to start caving in. As opposed to GM Fishbowls that tend to cave in a lot easier on the front end. I suspect most of the bus passenger injuries were from being thrown into something when the bus crashed into the car/building. Hope all those recover allright.
