If anyone cares, Saw the 95-2 with the Emergency Service Plan Level 1 P/R sign on ("ESP LEVEL 1"). I don't know if it still has it, but it did when it left Stafford Loop at around 9:13 AM. Interesting that "ESP" is on the far left of the sign, like a route number.

Also, since it hasn't been posted here yet, the 95 to Shaftesbury Park now shows "95 SHAFTESBURY", instead of "95 TUXEDO".

Some buses are already using it. Bombers logo on the left, and of course, "GREY CUP CHAMPS" on the right. And yes, "FACE MASKS REQUIRED" on the side and rear, unfortunately.

How are the buses able to display a different P/R message on the front from the side and rear?

I just noticed - after being MIA for a while the new Emergency Service Plan website is up (https://winnipegtransit.com/en/service/emergency-service-plan/).

To me there’s good and bad to this:

  • Good - ESP Level 1
    • The old Emergency Plan had a “BLUE” level of routes (some routes do not run, express run as local). As far as I am aware, this service was never enacted even though there were definitely times where is could have been. Instead a service alert is posted, and routes are detoured. ESP Level 1 basically just formalizes that this is what happens in reality. If it is ever enacted, I would be curious to see if the detoured stops show up on Navigo as “CANCELLED” as the ESP webpage this. (It would be nice if this happened with all reroutes)
  • Bad - ESP Level 2
    • The old Emergency Plan “RED” level was more functional than the ESP Level 2 network. The U of M isn’t even serviced with this network. Routes in the 230s service hospitals while routes in the 240s service main lines.
    • The route numbers are also very confusing as they clash with Transit Master Plan route numbers. For example ESP level 2 route 232 travels between Victoria Hospital and downtown (should be extended to U of M in my opinion, but whatever…) while TMP route 232 services Polo Park, Valour Road and Notre Dame.
    • Routes 233, 234, 235 have similar confusing overlaps between ESP and TMP.
  • Ugly - ESP Level 3
    • All service cancelled. If this happens then hell has probably frozen over.

It will, according to the website:

Q: Will schedule information appear online as usual when Winnipeg Transit is operating its Emergency Service Plan?

A: Under ESP Level 1, users attempting to access online schedule information for stops being bypassed by detours will see that the bus has been cancelled at those locations. While buses will stop at all stops along the detour, digital schedule information will not be available for stops not on the regular route. Schedule information for regular stops not affected by the detour will still be available.

The old red plan didn't serve the U of M either. Here's the map of the old red service routes, since some of you clearly might need a refresher.

The new plan isn't super different from the old plan, aside from using numbers instead of letters, though there are differences obviously. I can also reveal that buses would theoretically run every 20 minutes, on all routes. Last connections from downtown would be at 12:20 AM This is the schedule for the 232, for example. Made using crew data online.

Today, a bunch of runs were cancelled completely. Here's a look at what I'm talking about (note that in most of the screenshots, the app, made by yours truly, is set to only show cancelled buses).

On the Winnipeg Transit website, the BLUE page currently has the ESP Level 2 map, and route pages for 231-247 are up. However, regular service appears to be in effect. Still interesting to see them put these up on the website though.

It appears this is still showing as the map for BLUE. Interestingly, the link to BLUE’s route page is missing from the main route list (https://winnipegtransit.com/en/routes/list).

As an aside, I don’t understand why the on-request routes are also not on the route list page. The DARTs used to be there. Especially seeing as the on-request routes are not tied into Navigo, you would think WT would want to give them as much exposure as possible.

The DARTs weren’t tied into Navigo either. If you tried to plan a trip between somewhere and St. Amant, it would tell you to walk from the 75. With regards to the route list, they were probably removed because since there are no more fixed departures, there’s no longer any need for users to refer to a schedule.

The agenda for the first IRPW meeting of 2022 is up. They have a lot of changes in store for Zone 5. Notably, the service areas for all three On-Requests will be expanded. Specifically:

  • The intersections of Route 165 & St. Anne’s and Route 165 & Shorehill, as well as Southdale Centre, will be added to the 101’s service area
  • Royalwood will be re-added to the 102’s service area, as will St. Vital Centre
  • An area bounded by Carrière to the north, the Seine River to the east, Fermor to the south and St. Anne’s to the west will be added to the 110’s service area, and Sunday service on the 110 will be added.
  • Additional buses will be added to account for the expanded service area.

There is some bad news: to make up for these changes, the 53 will be cut back to Portage & Main and the 56 to Portage & Garry, forcing passengers headed further west on Portage to transfer.

There are seven documents (five of which are route maps) to sort through, so I’ll just post a link to the entire agenda for that meeting: https://clkapps.winnipeg.ca/dmis/ViewDoc.asp?DocId=21502&SectionId=&InitUrl=

I wonder why is 53 is cut back all the way to Portage and Main and the 56 goes to Portage and Garry? Portage and Garry is much easier to connect with the WB Portage busses mentioned in the report instead of Portage and Main.

If you’re transferring to/from the 53, you can switch to/from a 14, 19 or 55 (all of which run on a 10-minute-or-better headway at rush hour) virtually anywhere along St. Mary’s or Main. Whereas if you’re transferring to/from the 56, the 10, 43 and 50 do not run anywhere near as often, so it may be advantageous for those passengers to ride further into downtown and switch to something that runs more frequently.

Last week, I saw a bus going down the transitway signed "Zone 1". Not sure as to what that means as the bus didn't stop at the stations along the Transitway.

"ZONE 1" is for the employee night CATER system. Most likely, that bus did the Zone 1 CATER the previous night, and neither that driver, or the next driver changed the sign to Not in Service.

Also saw a XD60 turn around at Seel Station.

Most likely a mechanic testing the bus.

If I'm remembering right "21 Woodhaven" exists (or existed once), and to make it even more of an oddity I went on a WB run that was signed up as such (pretty sure it was just the actual Grace Hospital short-turn but I think I was only on for a handful of stops). It's more common to see a "22 Woodhaven" on the short EB contraflow runs that used to exist in the PM hours pre-coronavirus, so the sight was definitely odd.

Yes, "21 Woodhaven" exists. It was generally used for eastbound buses ending at Portage & Woodhaven (most of which came from Grace Hospital, though there was also one from Crestview, badly pictured below).

There are a lot of other rare or never-seen signs in the system. I might be able to unearth more of them in the future, with the help of my dad whose a transit driver, but no guarantees.
