Let's say someone starts in Abbotsford, boards the 66 to get to TransLink, gets to the ferry, goes into Victoria, then rides the 66 Duncan on the same day... ...or any other other various systems on Vancouver Island that connect to one another, like Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo, and Courtenay-Comox/Campbell River. Or the increasingly useful connection between South Okanagan-Similkameen and Kelowna, or Vernon and Kelowna... I would expect that UMO will have unique route codes internally to avoid this kind of issue.
ephrex
I would be surprised if the above poses issues at this time. As far as fare structure is concerned, all BC Transit subsystems are independent and separated, with no current provision for fare integration. I see it more appropriate to describe the Umo system as similar to Presto system in Ontario (or many other electronic fare cards for that matter) that are used for multiple different transit systems, often with duplicating route numbers.

They are all different "systems" (throw in Agassiz-Harrison and Hope Regional too while you're at it), but they are grouped together to be under the same operations contract. BC Transit does this a lot lately - for example, Whistler/Squamish/Pemberton are one contract, and all of the systems in northwestern BC (Burns Lake, Hazeltons, Kitimat, Port Edward, Prince Rupert, Skeena, Smithers, Terrace) are under one contract despite being separate "systems" operated out of separate facilities. Those systems also had the majority of their routes renumbered to reduce duplication, despite most of them being hours apart. I don't think local riders care too much whether their bus is numbered 1, 11, or 21 - so long as it gets them where they need to go.

If we eventually end up with province-wide transit, it would be nice to have TransLink-style triple digit routes with the first digit denoting region. So my guess is 66 is same age as those buses

Honestly though, well before I became interested in that area.

Might not be much of a help, but this routing structure was no longer in place by the time of my first visit to Chilliwack in March 2014, so it at least predates that.
