The other night, I went out to do some night photography on the harbourfront with my new Canon SL3.

I like it.

RAW files are incredible. I can't believe I ever made due without them. Not that I had much of a choice, but still.

RAW files are incredible. I can't believe I ever made due without them. Not that I had much of a choice, but still.

Nice pictures, especially the ones later into the evening where the darkening sky is most pronounced as the last of the daylight goes.  Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel might be coming for you over that one caption though!  I'm glad you're enjoying your new camera kit.  The harbourfront is definitely one of the most popular areas to test out new gear.  I used to do the same...and may be doing the same in the next few days since I have some medium format gear I haven't used yet that I've been itching to try out and between waiting for the weather to get better and the pandemic to calm down, it's taken this long.  One of my friends was out riding his bike in the Don Valley on one of the nice days in March or early April when everything was over the top draconian, stopped to take a few pictures, continued on his way and looped back about 10 minutes later and there was a police minivan and several cops right at the exact spot he had been taking pictures from.  He thinks he very narrowly escaped getting a $1,000 ticket and that put the chill on both of us as far as photography goes and was one of the things that started to cause me to revise my opinion downward about how the government's been handling things.  Now that things are a little bit more sane and it's nice out, it's time to get some equipment out and expose some film.

RAW files are great...but you're on the edge of a slippery slope for colour managed workflows and calibrated displays!  Are you embedding the ICC profiles in your JPEGS for the web?

I've tried shooting RAW files for my bus photography, but the thing is, the files are massively big, and since I don't have unlimited space on my hard drive, it is a bit unfeasable to me.  My bus photos are usually scaled down resolution wise for the web anyway.

But yea, those RAW photos are very nice quality, esspecially when it comes to all that detail (esspecially in the night shots)!

Wow, that is crazy! For sure things have calmed down a lot since then. Were it not for the weighing knowledge at the back of my mind, and the odd person wearing a mask, I don't think I'd even know there was a shutdown going on when I was down on the harbourfrount. Now's probably the best time to be playing around with your camera equipment in the last few months, that's for sure.

I am, yeah.

I definitely don't have any intentions of keeping my RAW files for more than a week or two after a trip, unless it's for something massively valuable that I'd like to hold on to long term, should ever I want to refine my technique. It is a must, though, for me to give them a do-over at least once, particularly to correct over-exposure (if half of the photos I linked above were JPEGs in their original form, they would've been unusable garbage - see the comparison I'm attaching below) and to remove lens distortion, which is particularly present when zoomed all the way out or in on the 18-55 mm lens. It's not noticeable on a landscape photo, but on a bus photo, it could lead to some very unwanted results, which can be edited away in Canon's DPP software.
