wil9402
The TTC seems to use 5460 to test new things on the TRs. It was the first set I saw with the thick plexiglass around the emergency intercom activate handles and it also received yellow and back stripped stickers around the articulation joints. Today I found a new addition to the interior of this train, new grab bars along the roof. These grab bars are located on the lower roof sections at the ends of each car. At the cab ends they are located right under the Next Stop screens. At the artic joint ends of the cars they are located between the last set of doors and the joint. They look quite odd. I took a quick shot of one of them on 5465 at the 5466 joint end of the car: BTW, 5460 also has the new door closing announcement with the "the" addition. soo8513
Grab bars on 5465, 5466. Seems useful for people under 6' but at 6'2" the bars are difficult to grab and beware the hard rubberized plastic handles can give you a good face wash if you're not careful. Also, I presume the bar assembly would need to be removed if repairs were needed inside the box above it. Bars only present in 5465 and 5466. Note, too, the entire train now has yellow/black warning hashes along the edges of the wall-joints between cars. First I've seen on a TR set. And lastly, METRO newspaper on TTC page has a "Did you Know" section with photo of a TR - there are 26 train sets in service on the Yonge Line. I had counted 27 (538 to 564). Practical solution using existing parts and materials already in inventory. As for removal, undo the outer stanchion clamps and it's off. No sweat. But it just looks like overkill on the amount of "stuff" up there. I could see just a simple grid of 2 bars going lengthwise the distance of the overhead HVAC, and a few cross bars to hold those in place.
Articulated
Well no. But it just looks like overkill on the amount of "stuff" up there. I could see just a simple grid of 2 bars going lengthwise the distance of the overhead HVAC, and a few cross bars to hold those in place. I'm less so impressed because of the amount of area it covers - this overhead rack requires a 4x4 grid of bars and it only covers 1/3 of the area underneath the HVAC unit. Also, why does only one of the 8 bars have the much-touted anti-microbial coating? Like 6688, I'd rather have a more simple system. Extend bars across from the existing stanchions (2 sets of bars either side of the door), and have two wrap around attached to the roof in front of the doors. I may not be a structural engineering expert, but this should involve roughly the same amount of metal and spread coverage across the entire HVAC unit. The access hatches don't extend the length of the HVAC unit, so you'd only have to undo the 2-4 bars underneath the hatch.

Happened to me, that's when I noticed them. Also, why does only one of the 8 bars have the much-touted anti-microbial coating? I was wondering the same thing. Only the outer bars have them. If you look closely, the coating does not even wrap around the entire bar. It is just on the side facing away from the "rack", which is why you can't see the coating on the other outer bar. I think the purpose for the coating on these grab bars is more to catch peoples attention so they don't hit their head on them rather than their main purpose of reducing bacteria. This is similar to how there is the red strips along the sides of the lower roof boxes. The rubber handles being yellow are likely another way to catch people's attention as well. rollsign29
I think just having a single bar along either side of the HVAC unit with 3-4 straps on it would suffice. I'm a tall guy (at 6'2") and while I haven't witnessed it first hand, that space is already the most height-restrictive passenger space in any model of subway car, so adding more bars to me isn't going to cut it. Run'm along the sides with straps. This will encourage standees to stay away from the middle, leaving an open passage for those movin through. Trying to say on the "experimental" topic, how are those external speakers on 546x working thus far?

Not even close. The side doors of every single piece of equipment are 6'4" tall, and that location is at least another 2 inches taller than that. Turtle
5661-5666 was out on the line testing yesterday. 5461-5466 has external door chimes on one side. Barely audible, only noticed them because they were out of sync with the interior speakers.

I've noticed that the chimes aren't very audible from the outside, particularly if another train is pulling into the station or if the rooftop A/C units are running. soo8513
Does the arrival of set 566 indicate that Bombardier has resolved the wheel issue and days are numbered for our H5 friends (or some H6 cousins)?
D. DeLarge
Does the arrival of set 566 indicate that Bombardier has resolved the wheel issue and days are numbered for our H5 friends (or some H6 cousins)? It could have just been built with older wheelsets they might have had on-hand at the factory. Don't forget, there was also labour trouble with another BBD factory (roofs IIRC) in Quebec that could also delay production.

Not roofs - all structural pieces of the cars are built at La Pocatiere, although they are formed into a carbody in Thunder Bay. Dan

Let's leave that height discussion to the doorway height, not ours. IIRC The doorway height is 'round 7' (2.13m). One of us has to get a measuring tape to figure it out. Shaun
Any word on if they will be able to resolve the slow speed? I noticed that they barely get over 70 going northbound. I know the H1's and H3's didnt have speedometers but i have a feeling they were faster. Maybee that's due to the track hunting characteristics at high speed and the noise. H1's were never good hill climbers, but the TR's dont seem to be much better.
