M. Parsons
Lucky that it wasn't a car or pedestrain that got struck by heavy debris. There was a transfomer that was hit though... leaving many in the dark.
kevlo86
Bus 7902 was operating Route 23 Foothills Industrial, facing eastbound on 50th Avenue waiting to turn right onto 52nd St. southbound when it was struck by the train. The impact appeared to spin the bus about 100 degrees clockwise. Here is a news release from CTV Calgary. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Derailed train causes major crash calgary.ctv.ca pts POSTED AT 6:05 PM Wednesday, November 1 Traffic along 52nd Street S.E. is still restricted after a dramatic train derailment and crash. It happened at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of 52nd Street and 50th Avenue. Clean up crews are still at the scene. CN Rails says a westbound train was pushing cars into the rail yard when it sideswiped the second train. A railcar smashed right into a bus, which was stopped at the intersection. The driver and six passengers were onboard but surprisingly no one was hurt. The train wasn't carrying anything hazardous so the only major problem was with traffic. Those problems are expected to continue throughout the night. Drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes. CN Rails says a westbound train was pushing cars into the rail yard when it sideswiped the second train. Power was also disrupted in the area and affected about 21 businesses for a period of time. As electrical supplies arrived, so did heavy equipment and crews to move the bus. Electricity is back on for all but a couple businesses. Enmax has to wait for the railcars to be removed before crews can get in to fix the power poles. Crews and officials hope everything will be cleared up by midnight. Northbound 52nd Street is closed at 54th Avenue S.E. except for local traffic. Traffic eastbound from Barlow Trail onto 50th Avenue S.E. is also restricted to local traffic only. The southbound lanes of 52nd Street are closed at Peigan Trail S.E., except for local traffic.
canuck600
2005 D40LF 7902 was struck by part of a CN train that derailed late Wednesday morning at 52 Street and 50 Avenue SE. CN really needs to get its act together, sooner or later if they keep this up, one of their derailments is going to have much more serious consequences with regard to human life. If I remember correctly a couple of CN employees were killed in a derailment on the old BC rail line around Lillooett in July?
LRT
Figure the bus is a write off?
kevlo86
Figure the bus is a write off? Highly unlikely. The bus is under 2 years old and doesn't even have that much damage on it. New Flyer D40LF's hold up very well. Takes a lot of force to wreck one.
A. Wong
My guess is that it would be sent back to New Flyer for repairs. After all, they can work wonders there:
M. Parsons
Since everyone seems has started bashing CN over this incident... I don't think CN can be blamed for this incident, as they have been with other major derailments. It would appear this was human error and the bus being in the wrong place at the wrong time. YRT-Guy
Two trains, city bus, collide in Calgary; no reports of injuries CALGARY (CP) -- Two trains and a city transit bus have collided in southeast Calgary, but there are no reports of injuries. Canadian National Railways says the crash happened around 11:20 a.m. as two slow-moving trains were operating on separate lines near a busy intersection, not far from the company's railyards. Witness Alan Strand says an eastbound train derailed and some of its cars collided with a freight entering the yard, adding that the scene is "nasty." Another witness, Joe Vodopija, says the bus was sideswiped and a big power pole was knocked out. CN spokesman Jim Feeney says a total of three cars derailed and no dangerous commodities were involved. (CHQR) --> Click the pic to see full size image taken from the Toronto Sun. I took a look at the bus the other day at Spring Gardens, and the lower floor frame does not look damaged.

kevlo86
2233 (a new SD160 LRV) has arrived in Calgary as of today. It was spotted on a flatbed trailer at the unloading track for C-Train deliveries near Southland and Heritage stations (don't remember the exact location) earlier today by a CT operator. This is what Peter McLaughlin has told me. The body design is the same as previous SD160's (2201-2232).

A. Wong
like to see some Pics! Any idea when Edmonton gets there new ones? The new (Calgary) cars are supposed to look pretty identical to the ones already in service.Edmonton's are due for 2008. Ours will look more like San Diego's S70s than Calgary's SD160s.

November 14, 2006: Added 47 New "CTrain" LRT Photos to the Calgary Transit (Alberta) Photo Gallery. BCT-3122-D800-10240
The same day I took all those photos of #2233 being unloaded off of the Trailer, myself and a friend went to check out an old Fishbowl that we he had heard about at the CPA Auctions in S.E. Calgary. As we arrived at the CPA yard, we were shocked to see an old Ex-CT 1972 Flyer D700A on the back of a flatbed truck on the move in the yard. I thought it was about to leave, so I stopped my car and jumped out with Camara ready and started taking photos as the truck then did a U-turn right there as I was taking photos. Later, after the truck had unloaded the old Flyer, we found out it was Serial #72203 which is Ex-CT #527. We also found that the GM Fishbowl, serial #C238 was Ex-Calgary Transit 1964 GM TDH-5303 #554 and photographed it as well. I had not seen either of these buses in over 14 years since I found them parked together in a lot near Cardinal Coach Lines in N.E. Calgary. Photos will be available later today on my website. I will post here when they are available.

BCT-3122-D800-10240
How bad is the fire damage? I am under the Impression that the bus is totaled. There was a Miss-communication and the Fire Department ended up at Whitehorn Station and not at 37th Ave. and Barlow Station where the bus was in service on the route 57. Apparently it was a problem in the brakes that caused the fire as well.
