downbeat Posted March 22, 2020 Report Share Posted March 22, 2020 In case anyone believed social distancing measures would be rescinded in the short term … spotted these earlier this afternoon, on multiple conventional buses — but not all of them. I don’t think Transit would bother with this kind of signage if they didn’t believe this would go on for a long while. Brothers and Sisters, As we know in this emergency situation, ridership is going down, so transit is reducing service on LRT and Bus. There will be a new sign up with adjusted service. This is, sadly, a prudent step. I imagine Transit has to strike the right balance between offering basic service while making sure there are enough healthy drivers and behind the scenes staff to make everything work. I also hope the 50% farebox recovery mandate is temporarily waived. Even with minimal service, there’s no way they’ll make the required money back under present circumstances. The only thing I would have done differently was maybe waited until the week after they announced service reduction to Saturday service but at this point it's working well and they are easily covering work and saving a considerable amount of money on overtime cost. April 20 is when the reduced signup will start for Calgary Transit. What could be scheduled to run at 17:30 the night before when the run is cut could be cut by the next morning because that operator went sick...sometimes within minutes of the scheduled report time...sometimes pulled off the road because an operator is deemed unfit for duty...trying to keep everyone safe and healthy... This, like a number of points that you bring up, are not as simple as you think it is... The 302 appeared to have cigarette butts at the back, along with what looked like some sort of fluid... it wasn't vomit or blood, but whatever it was, the driver went out of his way to tell me NOT to sit back there. 43 had the used clothing, biohazards, garbage and stuff. I doubt it was let like that from the garages lol, but the backdoor boarding lately along with non-enforcement of payment, have definitely made it easier for certain peoples to vehemently abuse public transit. Honestly too, I've yet to see any fare enforcement lately either. No checks for fare on the buses, no ripped tickets or transfers, I haven't even seen a fare check on the trains in months... let alone the past couple weeks. No one's been checking, from what I've seen, since this all started. There's peace officers at the stations, especially Somerset to make sure no ones passed out on the trains before they go back to garage NIS, but I just haven't seen any fare enforcement at all - no ripped tickets, no one even stamping tickets or showing their passes anymore either. It's just been widely interpreted by most of us riders, that Calgary Transit has now gone free during the virus, with no worries about non-payment of fares, or even fines, for trashing the back of a bus like that. I know, but maybe for appearances sake, a walkthrough occasionally would feel better for some of the riders? I'm okay with it too, even though I have a pass for March, I can't afford one for April... so if this stays quasi-free until April 30th, as long as I didn't see what I saw on the 43 the other day... I know Transit doesn’t officially sanction third-party interfaces for their GTFS feed but they really should thank you for the stuff you do. It’s a fantastic supplement to the array of ways to access transit data.
