Ads?

Yes, I have put Google ads on the footer of every page. I placed it there specifically to lessen the impact of ads hindering the usability of the forums.

This is an experiment to see how much revenue would be possible on the CPTDB. Any income would be put towards the operation of this site.

I know a lot of people may not agree with this, but be advised that they can be removed at any time. Please DO NOT randomly click them unless you are genuinely interested because it doesn't help and causes trouble. This "fake activity" is tracked.

Any constructive comments or feedback are welcome.

Meh, those Google Ads are so common I've developed the ability to just block them out, so I couldn't care less, especially if it helps out.

I've considered doing the same thing on Barp. It is not cheap to run a website.

Good question... wonder if it still counts since we aren't selling the photos themselves. Doing some reading, it probably does count as a commercial site, but we aren't really selling anything - there is no charge to the user (only Google's advertisers).

1. Content based sites

Some websites derive revenue by selling advertising space on the site (see contextual ads). Typically such a site will not sell products or services to its users, but instead will provide information or other content, usually for free. This is a similar model to a free magazine or newspaper, which derives revenue from the advertisers who pay to appear alongside the useful content. However, with a website, the advertising revenue earned may be based on the number of times viewers click on the ad, or the number of times the page containing the ad is seen by a viewer.

This site falls under the category of:

Non U.S. Business (No U.S. Activities): The payee's operations related to participation in AdSense are based entirely outside of the U.S., and payee does not pay taxes in the U.S.

Would this not then mean that those websites could be interpretated as a "commercial" site as you are generating revenue from it?

Not really sure, and we would not like to lose our "non-comercial photo" exclusions as to waivers etc?

Just a thought that crossed my mind...

I think there's a difference between recovering your operating costs, and going out and trying to make money.

Based upon me, and me alone... I don't know who would ever even click on any of those ads anyways, so I can't see that there is much money to be made. I could be wrong though.

Yep, that is for sure, have to be careful.

Usually I think the restrictions list "non-commercial photography" - not sure if allowing people to post/see photos on the internet for free while (technically in writing) I make money to pay off costs to run the website counts as a part of that.

Research time!

In some other threads, there was an ad for repossessed buses, and several charter bus ads, as well as one claiming "old buses are new again!"

I would guess that as long as the photos themselves are not making money, then all is gravy. You are using ads to make money to run the site, and this site itself doesn't sell anything, so I don't think we will run into any legal problems. Maybe if you add a disclaimer somewhere on the site that you are not responsible for endorsements, products, opinions, blah blah blah... Then that should cover any legalities lol...

Transit Toronto has been running with ads and to the best of my knowledge, they haven't run into any problems...

Some things I've noticed with the ads:

  • The indexed (by Google) CPTDB is searched for terms, and ads relating to those terms are shown
  • On pages that one must sign in to view, the terms searched are relating to logging in, registering, and the like, therefore I've been seeing ads like "secure log on site" and "register now!"
  • On pages that are viewable to all visitors, the terms are what we type in our posts, for example in the "Where am I" thread, there was an ad for "laptop location services"
  • Several Flash based ads have been shown. When they come up, my entire firefox screen goes white for about a second and a half, then the ad (and the rest of the page) appears

But who really looks at them? <_<

It does base the ads on content, which is one of the reasons it is more successful than random ads. You can learn about it more at https://www.google.com/adsense

As for Flash... I haven't had one come up, or I just haven't noticed it.

I noticed in this thread that they are all related to taxes. I would imagine that the page was indexed on the first view, and in your first post, you said "revenue," so I think that's where it comes from. <_<

As well, I think Cathay 888 must have been the first person to post after you added the ads, because all the ads on posting pages are Cathay this, Cathay that.

Ok. umm.. not to bring up a fairly old topic, but does anyone know for certain how are these ads generated? Are they completley random? Or based on the users profile or something? The reason I ask is an ad just came up for me and it was a banner ad at the bottom of the page for BBWCupid.com (BBW stands for: Big Beautiful Women).... so ummm.. ya.... I assume they ARE random????

If CPTDB is concerned about fake activity by clicking on these sites without intention, you can simply go to the website (without clicking on the link but typing the url in the address bar). I've done that after becoming curious about some ads but not having the slightest intention to buy their product.

The ads are generated mostly by content on the page you are on. (For example, if you are in the Photography forum you will probably see some ads about photography.) But if there are no relevant ads at the time, it will throw some up randomly.

Or you can "block images from [whatever site they're on]" and only see text and flash ads!
