Everything made sense until this, would someone be able to fill me in?

Ed T. Posted December 28, 2024 Report Posted December 28, 2024 Having spent a really boring hour+ at Hamilton GO* after dropped off by the bus, I guess if I go for a free transit gallivant on New Year's Eve, I might stick to the Lakeshore E and W line. At least I can easily get back to Long Branch station. It's tempting to try to go to Barrie or Kitchener, but the return would be a pain. I'm sure I could get to the airport or Union, but then there's more travel to get back to Long Branch. *Any New Year's Eve festivities in the area of Hamilton GO were so low key as to be basically non-existent. 1
Articulated Posted January 4 Report Posted January 4 How far has GO gotten with refurbishing the BiLevel coaches? Just saw 2640 and 2647 in the Metrolinx colours, which suggests to me that they are well into the Series VII coaches.

Almost all in the first are. 2005 has the new colours on the inside, not sure about others. Rode 2242 two days ago and it’s not refurbished inside or out.

There was a tender that MX put out a couple of years ago for repainting a large amount of coaches. I assume this is that coming home to roost. Every 26xx I've been on recently has had its original interior, and there was a low numbered 2500 accessibility coach in the MX colours that I rode last night that still had its original, devastated looking seats. As far as I know it is the Series II cars that are being worked on right now, as well as the rest of the deactivated cab cars. Given the vapourware that is GO expansion, only God knows when we'll see any of them though. 5 minutes ago, New Flyer said: Most coaches from the second and third series are not repainted. Lex Reid Posted January 15 Report Posted January 15 Some Bus Fleet Updates, 2432 is retired converted to a Training Bus, and 4000/4001 E Buses are also retired. 4

It's not surprising that they retired the E500EVs. They barely saw service at the best of times. I was really only able to see both units on the road once, on their first day. I'm curious what is going to happen to them and if the Proterra bankruptcy indirectly led to their retirement.
GTAmissions1 Posted January 16 Report Posted January 16 The Ontario government is spending almost $500 million dollars to refurbish 181 coaches to extend the lifespan by another 20 years. Refurbishment will take place at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay. https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/1005589/ontario-investing-in-go-transit-bi-level-rail-coaches 2

Railcars need to be refurbished about every 20-25 years, but can keep going so long as you maintain them. For example, VIA's long-distance Budd coaches were built in the mid-1950s. GO's first BiLevel coaches were built in 1975, and have undergone two rounds of refurbishments. There are no concrete plans for the electrification of GO's network currently. Everything seems up in the air with GO/IO attempting to rely on a P3-like process by having a private company determine the needs for the system. Either way, the last time I heard much about electrification, the idea was to only electrify the "core" parts of the system that would operate Regional Express Rail scheme, while diesel trains would continue to operate express trips (where they need to accelerate fewer times, or at least can maintain speed over longer distances) and trains to the outer ends of the branch lines past the end of electrification. This was like a decade ago though, so plans are likely to have changed to suit the contractor.

This is leading GO to explore other propulsion technologies until they can come to a final solution.

I'd assume given the timing, that now that the contractor would have provided significant input, that these cars are going to be required. And will be operated with the electric locomotives. What I'd guess though, is there won't be new cars, and that's where we'll start seeing EMUs. Though with the much shorter trains (on Lakeshore at least), I wonder how many cars they'll need compared to currently.

I think part of my point above (albeit unstated) is that new equipment is a long ways away from arriving (likely at least 10 years at this point). In the meantime, the existing diesel locomotives and BiLevel coaches need to be maintained to continue supporting the current service levels, so they will need to undergo their planned 20/25 year refurbishment. They may even last longer than that, if the previous plan for a mixed diesel/electric fleet is maintained.
GTAmissions1 Posted January 17 Report Posted January 17 3 minutes ago, Mark Walton said: Which ones? No unit numbers were given other than the total quantity of coaches looking to be refurbished to keep them in-service long enough until the future of new rolling stock can be chosen depending on what will be compatible. Extending by another 20 years should buy enough time until the future of service delivery can be chosen.
nfitz Posted January 17 Report Posted January 17 I can't see them surviving another decade without adding coaches. Though perhaps they can get some on the second hand market.
