Williamv
Today’s new request for proposals from the state procurement office: Furnish and deliver sixty (60) foot articulated clean diesel buses for a three (3) year period. Estimated numbers are 9 the first year and 13 each in the second and third years for a total of 35. Undoubtedly these vehicles would replace the remaining 2002-2003 New Flyers (102-131). It also means Hawaii may not be getting any articulated battery electric buses until it’s time to replace the 140s and 150s. That could happen in the next five years while funds from the infrastructure law are still available. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to order one or two electric articulateds and chargers right now, just to try them out. Does anyone think the price of diesel fuel will be going down any time soon? In the meantime, look for the government to provide funds to replace the remaining 40-foot 800s, the 500s and the New Flyer 900s with electric vehicles. Williamv
Senator Brian Schatz announced Friday (3/11) that he has secured $10 million in funding to “help purchase electric buses and charging infrastructure to provide battery electric bus service along the Route 40 corridor.”

Hoping that they stick to their guns with Gillig as the other electric only manufacturers (BYD, Proterra) have had mixed results.

I don’t think that we will be getting articulated BEBs anytime soon. I think the range has yet to be seen and trialed, especially on longer routes. I’m sure we could always get a demo from NFI but I think that it would only be NFI for that. Novabus doesn’t me buy America standards and BYD had mixed results on the 40’ trials; I doubt OTS would reconsider BYD. 14 hours ago, Jared Kam said: They want this 24 hour route to run with continuous bus service with rapid charging at the end points. I’m not sure why we didn’t trial them the first round and I’m sure the two buses could share rapid charge infrastructure

Kalihi or Pearl City? Charging equipment? Great questions that I dont have the answer to Because its numbered 6012, I would assume that its an electric. Since all the chargers are at Kalihi, safe to assume it would be based at Kalihi too. Im not sure if it uses different chargers or not but I guess we’ll see. Id also guess that the current livery just looks better on the artics but not sure.

Or could they be diesel buses? We assumed fleet numbers beginning with 29, 35, 40 and 60 were reserved for electrics. But I can’t find any records of Honolulu ordering 60-foot electric buses. It would be unfortunate and confusing if all new buses, regardless of propulsion system, were grouped together in the same numbering. Either way, we would all like to know what we are getting.
